Erin second encounter with death comes at the hands of her husband Justin. Bree recently separated from Justin because he recently suffered a relapse into his oxy addiction. Erin has two children she didn't want to expose to Justin's addiction.
Justin’s best friend Matt Flynn, a former sheriff’s deputy and K-9 officer, isn’t too sure of Justin’s guilt and teams with Bree to determine the guilt or innocence of Justin.
Bree’s and Matt’s pairing is not problem free as Matt still has his K-9 partner and Bree is terrified of dogs. Also they start as coming from opposite ends of the investigation.
As usual Leigh’s writing is a perfect fit for those who love puzzles that are not an easy solve; maybe a 500 piece puzzle. A story with main characters fully fleshed out; as they should be since Cross Her Heart (Bree Taggert#1) is the beginning of a new series. Romantic suspense this may be, but this is really only the set up for a future romance. I am a fan of differing POVs, because truth is always relative. Leigh also does a terrific job in beginning to paint the small town of Grey’s Hollow. I like to compare Leigh's writing to a fine bourbon, smooth, mellow but with a definite bite.

So I really liked this first book though I think that things got a bit too convoluted towards the end. I will definitely read the next book though because I like how Melinda Leigh set this up and I adored the characters of Bree and her partner from the Philadelphia police, Dana. I was okay about Mike (the other lead I guess you could say) but not that focused on him while reading this.

I requested Cross Her Heart from Netgalley based on Karin’s Slaughter’s Bookbub recommendation. Based on that recommendation, I was expecting something similar to her Will Trent series but with a female lead. Cross Her Heart is not necessarily what I was expecting, though it’s too soon to tell.

It’s an excellent start, a solid, intriguing and well-paced mystery that introduces and starts fleshing out the central characters and the relationships between them at the same time as it presents a mystery that is very personal for Bree, whose tragic past is brought abruptly back to her in the worst possible way.

The book opens on a harrowing scene taking place at eight-year-old Bree’s home in Grey’s Hollow in upstate New York. She is desperate to protect her younger siblings – Erin and baby Adam – from their violent, abusive father, as he rages at and beats their mother. Bree has managed to call the police and to keep herself and her brother and sister safe, although when the police arrive, it’s too late for their mother – and their father then turns the gun he used to shoot her on himself.

While Adam and Erin were taken in and brought up by their grandmother, Bree, who was something of a handful, was brought up by a stern cousin in Philadelphia. Looking back, Bree can see that their childhood separation has had a negative effect on their adult relationship; they’re not close, and although Erin continues to live in Grey’s Hollow, Bree has rarely been able to get past her issues to visit there, so Erin and her two kids visit Philly once a year instead. When we meet Bree again, she- now a homicide detective with the Philadelphia PD – and her soon-to-retire partner, Dana Romano, have just chased down a suspect when Bree picks up a panicked message from Erin saying she’s in trouble, but when she calls back, only gets voicemail. Worried because Erin is the head down, go to work, raise her kids sort who’s never in trouble, and still unable to contact her, Bree heads to Grey ‘s Hollow – and her fears for Erin only ratchet up when she arrives at her sister’s house to see two sheriff’s department vehicles parked outside. Something is very, very wrong.

Erin has been killed, and the chief deputy explains that their main suspect is her estranged husband, Justin, who is currently missing. Erin’s body was found by Justin’s friend, Matt Flynn, a former sheriff’s investigator and K-9 handler, who was at the house to collect Justin to take him to his Narcotics Anonymous meeting. Drugs were the cause of Justin and Erin’s split; he became addicted to pain meds following a car accident, and she didn’t want him around her kids while he was using. But they were still seeing each other and intended to work things out, and Justin has been trying, with Matt’s help and support, to get clean.

Matt left the sheriff’s department three years earlier after he was shot in his right hand and, due to nerve damage, is no longer able to fire a weapon. Matt is sure Justin isn’t responsible for Erin’s death and is concerned for his safety; he’s also not completely confident that the sheriff’s department, which is short on personnel following the dismissal of the former sheriff and other officers for corruption, is going to pursue the investigation properly – or that the corruption has been completely eradicated.

Chief Deputy Todd Harvey knows that Bree and Matt aren’t going to sit quietly by while his department investigates, so he makes a deal with them; he won’t try to stop them, but wants to be kept informed of what they find out and will share information with them in return.

As I’d expect from Melinda Leigh, the mystery is well-put together, with plenty of twists and turns and gradually building tension and suspense as Bree and Matt work together to find Justin and identify Erin’s killer. Alongside the mystery we get the gradual unveiling of Bree’s character, a smart, competent, resilient yet flawed individual who is suddenly faced with a shedload of new responsibilities she’d never thought to have, two grieving children she doesn’t know all that well and her own grief and guilt at not keeping her sister safe as she’d vowed to do so many years ago. I enjoyed the focus on the family as Bree slowly absorbs the fact that her life is never going to be the same; Morgan Dane, in the author’s previous series, had a strong family unit which rounded her out and grounded her as a character, and I was pleased there’s to be something similar happening here.

I liked Matt, who is being set up as Bree’s future love interest. He’s a good guy; dependable and supportive, he clearly cares a lot for Justin, and comes to care for and respect Bree and her abilities as an investigator. There’s the merest frisson of attraction between them at this stage, but fingers crossed that will develop as the series progresses. Dana is a great addition to the family unit; Bree’s closest friend and work-partner, she’s about to retire from the force and goes to Grey’s Hollow to deliver Bree’s cat Vader (!) and to help out while Bree decides what she’s going to do next.

Cross Her Heart is an entertaining story featuring attractive and engaging leads and a supporting cast I look forward to getting to know in future books. I enjoyed the balance between plot- and character- driven elements in the story, and my one real complaint is that the identity of the villain came as something of a surprise, but not in a good way. This character was present in one scene (apart from the few short chapters told anonymously from his PoV) and was mentioned only a few times, so when he was revealed to be the killer it didn’t feel organic or as though the clues had really been leading to that point.

In spite of that, however, I enjoyed the book and would certainly recommend it to fans of the author or to anyone looking to try her work for the first time. ...more

Wow, I was wary of a new series as I really enjoyed Mercy and her stories, I kept putting this one off, but I needed a good book, and hoped that this would be the one.

Cross Her Heart was the quickest read ever. The writing was amazing as always and the plot was engaging, if a bit convoluted. The first chapter was so so so sad and Leigh perfectly translated that kind of horror to the page as well as the tension that followed with Erin’s mystery. The focus of the novel was very much in the investigation, but there was still a flicker of romance at the end.

I had difficulty placing tags on this contemporary suspense. It was not what I would consider a police procedural though the main protagonist was a homicide detective. Her job was in another city. Bree Taggert took a temporary leave and returned home when her sister was murdered. No matter, she becomes involved informally with the assistance of a former local policeman. He was the best friend of the town’s number one suspect. It was an absorbing premise to say the least.

But the more Bree digs into the crime, the more apparent it becomes that someone wants Bree to stop and will do anything to make her.

Bree is an amazing main character and I enjoyed her from the start. She's a smart, capable, and determined individual. Her determination to find out what happened to her sister was admirable and I liked how loyal she was to her family. With her sister's death, Bree finds herself the guardian of her sister's two children which presents a lot of challenges. I liked how Bree handled the kids' grief and that she let them decide their next steps on their own timetables. The relationship between the three is solid. Bree's partner at Philly homicide, Dana, is a great character and I really like the dynamic in their friendship. That Dana came to help Bree take care of the kids and find out what happened to Erin really spoke volumes about the depth of their friendship. Bree's partner in her investigation, Matt, is a great character and I liked how well the two worked together. In this first installment in the series, there's only the hint at a romance to come between the pair but I'm interested to see how that relationship develops.

Erin's death is shocking and initially her husband Justin looks good as a suspect. As Bree and Matt look into the pair's lives though, it becomes clear something is going on and that maybe Justin isn't as guilty as he first appears. During the course of the investigation, Bree and Matt work closely with the sheriff's department although both sides do withhold information. Officially Bree can't be involved in the case as the victim is family, but I liked that the head investigator clearly knew she would look into the case anyway and tried to exchange information where possible. Throughout the book we get chapters from the point of view of the killer which I liked as it helped provide background on why Erin was killed. The end of the book is very fast-paced with a ton of action and overall I was happy with the way everything wrapped up.

Overall Cross Her Heart was a fantastic read and I'm excited to continue on with the series when the next book, See Her Die, releases later this year.

Another solid read by Melinda Leigh. Strong police procedural with lots of twists and turns to keep you reading on. The introduction of Matt with his dog was a great addition. More on the dog rescue that his sister is starting up would be fantastic!

Melinda Leigh’s an old hand at this by now…writing taut and tight thrillers, I mean. With cleverly plotted, smartly-paced narratives that scarcely let you blink, the new Bree Taggert series—following the Morgan Dane one which I loved—is promising to be a good one, particularly if you’re more into the suspense than the romance.

A good suspense is always one of my favorite genres. I didn’t read any novels before from this author, but I heard about her. And I’m very glad that I got the arc from netgalley, I really liked the story. Bree Taggert is the heroine that I want to read in suspense novels. She’s smart, strong and good in her job. Her childhood was hard, and now she is in that town again. Her sister Erin is dead and she will do anything to find her killer and be with her children.

It has all the elements of many a modern procedural: a female detective with scars from the past, a close to home unsolved murder, a hunky male ‘partner’, and, of course, loveable animals. Here we have horses as well as dogs and cats. It should have worked for me, but I spent most of my time rereading pages because I had lost my concentration, or wondering why it never felt engrossing. I don’t understand all the praise it is receiving here , but guess I am missing something.

The book was pretty good. I eventually settled on a killer and was correct. No real twist. Not much in the way of romance, though it wasn’t needed. However, there was a set up for one in the future considering this is a series. I would have preferred a Morgan Dane novel, but oh well. The narrator was great.
