The Republic of Jack is a satirical glimpse into Texas politics, as well as a look at what life might be like in Texas if she ever seceded from the United States. The author, Jeffrey Kerr, has written several other Texas-based books. I do believe, however, that rather than using this book as a cry to rally the Texas troops, Kerr is using it as a means to tell Texans,
be careful what you wish for.

What would a satire be without stereotypes? Kerr’s cast is well-stocked with them. There is the poli

“You can only lead where people want to go.”

The Republic of Jack by Jeffrey Kerr is a humorous view of what could happen if Texas ever seceded from the United States. Jack Cowherd is running for Governor of Texas, but what he gets instead is a bucketful of problems that goes from annoying to downright deadly in a matter of days. Fred on Jack’s campaign team wrangles the election so that Jack wins the Governorship, but there is a catch. What happens next is pure satire that will leave you laughi

I think that with the chaos going on within my beloved country and especially within the great state of Texas, The Republic of Jack by Jeffrey Kerr could not have come at a better time. It pokes fun at the misguided and misunderstood ideas that allow terrible things like misogyny and racism to run rampant. And it is my fervent hope that even just one person whose hatred for our country, a particular race or nationality, sexual orientation, religion, or gender will read this book and realize how ...more

I don’t usually read a lot of satire, but when I got the opportunity to read The Republic of Jack, I was intrigued. I went to college and law school in Texas, and I lived there for a good handful of years before moving back to my home state of Louisiana. In my early career as a prosecutor, I actually took a member of the Republic of Texas to trial for a charge of driving with a suspended license, of all things. (That was an interesting experience!) So the idea of the Republic of Texas crowd actu ...more

I read an advance description of this book and thought it sounded amusing so I requested an ARC. I am so glad the author agreed to share a copy with me. This book is outstanding. It’s well-written and the plot is ingenious and riveting. If you’re a fan of satire in politics (which I am), this book is for you. It is chock-full of clever comparisons to our current political climate, some of which made me laugh out loud. Not content to stick to MAGA-inspired humor, the author also inserts a joke ab ...more

Have you ever wondered what would have happened if Texas seceded when George W. Bush became governor or Rick Perry? This is the book that tells us what happened! Not exactly, but it is a well-crafted and witty political satire with jokes that hit so close to home that you just have to laugh in spite of wanting to cry! The Republic of Jack follows Jack Cowherd, the Attorney General of Texas and a charismatic leader. Jack runs for governor and wins, wh

One evening at supper as I was regaling my family with what I thought was a fascinating historical tidbit, my son threw up his hands and said, "Dad, enough. Write a book!" So I did. I liked the process and wrote another. And another. And another. Help, I'm writing and I can't stop!

My latest effort, The Republic of Jack, is a political satire inspired years ago by an elderly man who approached me a
