'Girl power' with a title like that and a cover so attractive appealed to me real fast. The blurb is short sweet and informative.

I have read the paperback version and i want to first comment on the paper quality which is very good thick paper, the text is very well spaced. The illustrations are beautifully done.

This book is a collection of 50 stories of women from yesteryears to contemporary times and that's what makes this read so relatable. I read the stories and really loved them they are informative without being boring with a right amount of inspiration in the text.
The stories are narrated in a simple lucid style and with a length that is suitable for readers of all ages.
If you love to read to your children. This is one of those books which you can enjoy binge reading or reading it one story at a time. The joy you get remains the same.
I feel it's a must read for both genders and all ages alike. A healthy dose of inspiration is always welcome and will do a great deal of good to all. I commend the author at penning this beautiful book. I am looking forward to reading more of her books

Do you know which woman was the first mayor of Delhi? Do you know about the first female amputee in the world who climbed Mount Everest?

If your answer is no, then there is a chance you do not know about many such courageous and inspiring women because before reading this book, I didn’t either.
Girl Power: Indian Women Who Broke the Rules by Neha J Hiranandani briefly tells us the story of 50 Indian women who went against what society told them, overcame adversity and achieved their dreams.

This book is in the format of a graphic novel. I have to appreciate the exceptional artwork by Niloufer Wadia that complements the short-stories perfectly. I do wish that the stories were longer but since it is a children’s book, the length is appropriate.

This is an incredibly important book. In the hands of a little girl who has a dream that people tell her she cannot achieve, this book can be momentous in inspiring her. There were many women mentioned in this book who I knew nothing about. It made me realize that there are many inspiring women around us and there is so much I can learn from them.

Everyone faces difficulties in their life at some point or another. There is no hurdle that you cannot overcome and be who you want to be. This book is proof of that.

I recommend this book to everyone. This is a book that needs to be shared so if you are looking for a book to gift someone, pick this up!

Girl Power! by Neha J Hiranandani is a gem of a book, full of beautiful illustrations and empowering stories of marvelous women who rebelled against the patriarchy, barbs of the society, violence, caste difference and physical disabilities. Each of them went against the tide to create history and set an example for millions. Famous personalities like freedom fighter Aruna Asaf Ali, Dr.Anandibai Joshee, world oldest sharp shooter Chandro Tomar, trailblazing lawyer Cornelia Sorabji, scientist Asima Chatterjee, photographer Homi Vyarwalla, Shuttler P.V.Sindhu and many others are featured in the anthology.
:
But discovering the lesser known personalities like 77yr old Warrior Grandma Meenakshi Gurukkal who still teaches the martial art form Kalaripayattu, female priest Megha Gokhale who made a niche for herself in a field dominated by men, the fashion phoneix Laxmi an acid attack victim who didn't let acid burn her dreams and the first female firefighter Harshini Kanhekar who proved woman can do anything she sets her mind onto was pure delight.Geeta Seshamani and her team painstakingly rescued 628 sloth bears and ended a 400 years old cruel practice of dancing bears. The Century old Yoga granny V.Manammal is a great inspiration to one and all.
:
A line by Kalpana Saroj that really inspired me 'Hardwork is not overrated. It is fail proof'.
:
A well researched and well written book, the tales kept me glued to the very end.It left me vying for more.Easy to comprehend with eye catching illustrations by Niloufer Wadia, it makes a great book for kids and a treasure for adults.
:
I want to thank the author for the lovely piece.Would recommend the book to everyone.

This book is based on "Girl Power". The girls who not only stood up for themselves but also helped the society in many ways.

The cover of the book along with the paper quality is remarkable. Many females whom I've not heard enough of, are also present in this book. I really liked the book as being a female, I would obviously appreciate this. But I didn't liked the fact that she used Priyanka Chopra's name in the book, if the author wanted to drag in bollywood then Kangto na Ranaut has struggled more than her and her name is also supposed to be there. This is the only reason for the 4 star.

I think if the author wanted to drag bollywood then she should've taken the names of everyone from bollywood who struggled.

Very lucid and easy language was used to convey the stories of 50 empowering woman. Would love to read more from this author!

There is not an iota of doubt regarding the indomitable willpower of a woman. From the era of epic Ramayana where Sita has successfully safeguarded her dignity to the great Mahabharata where the entire kingdom had to bow down before Draupadi's fierce decision, women has often demonstrated the power of their courageousness. No wonder an educated woman is capable of teaching two families. Indian woman has very effectively surpassed all the odds of their life to turn their goals into accomplishments.

Girl Power by Neha J Hiranandani has compiled the stories of fifty such women who has once atleast made all of us proud. The author has neatly covered the bravery of women in the 19th century along with the present tales of determination. When you would go through the pages, once thing you would surely realise is the umpteen number of difficulties they have faced and how instead of surrendering to the fate, they have chosed to create their own destiny. I praise the author for introducing us to the unsaid warriors and i personally feel that such books should be included in school curriculum to make our young generation familiar with such impactful stories.

Girl Power: Indian Women Who Broke the Rules is a book that talks about the stories of 50 dynamic women who dared to dream and achieve it.

If you have read rebel girls and loved the book, then I am sure this book will be a delight! It is tailor-made for the Indian audience, talking about the stories of women from different facets of the industry. Some broke the tradition to safeguard the country, while some overcame their own fears and the shackles of society to make their mark in the Indian History. Some excelled in sports, some in movies, some in the fields that only were made for women!

The debutante author Neha J Hiranandani, has done a thorough research before penning the powerful stories of awe-inspiring women. The writing is crisp - each story is covered in not more than 300 words, in lucid language with illustrations that are pretty and powerful.

This book can be a bedtime read for children, both boys and girls, to inspire them! Books like these lay a strong foundation for kids and make them passionate about their hobbies, studies, etc.

Overall, my rating for the book in terms of storyline, writing and illustration would be 4.8/5.

'If I came, late, people would say that come late. If I fail to lift equipment, people would say that girls are weak. I would [even] practise lighting equipment in the storeroom so that I [wouldn't] fail in front of people. No field of work belongs to any gender.' - Harshini Kanhekar

'As long as I moved around my husband, people didn't take me seriously. I was often dismissed as being 'just a girl'. I didn't mind. At school, I was the only girl [in my class]. So, I was used to being in the company of boys.' - Homai Vyarawalla

Who'll buy the salt of freedom?' - Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay

'I was willing to do anything... When I started my company, I didn't have money, so I would travel all over India in a train or on a bus. I couldn't afford plane ✈ ticket 🎫. Things weren't easy. Banks were fearful of lending [money] to a, woman.' - Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw

'The only disability in life is a bad attitude. Going by this, I don't think I've a disability!' - Malvika Iyer

'Just before that, I had suffered dizziness because my oxygen had run out. I wanted to sit, but there was no place; the only way was up. Girls can do anything.' - Poorna Malavath

'I always wanted to be someone. That's when the story of Ayurveda dawned in my mind. If a woman can go blind with the use of makeup, there's something wrong with the beauty business. 'I saw a judge wrong disqualify a participant. I disagreed with the decision & went on stage to voice my opinion, only to be insulted by the judges as an old woman who didn't know anything. Then I performed ten different yoga [asanas] including the peocock & the headstand, right there on stage & received a standing ovation. These days there're gyms. In olden days, everyone did some exercise or the other. While I never formally learnt yoga, I picked it up from my grandfather just by watching him. I've never visited a hospital in my life. My mother-in-law was out in the farm & sprained her leg. Instead of getting her to see a doctor, I offered to teach her some yoga poses & she got better.' - V Nanammal

'It felt like my whole body was on fire. My face was melting like a plastic. I had no nose, the lips were somewhere ... my face was completely ruined. Nothing is impossible. I can't stress enough how important that is. He threw acid on my face, not on my dreams.' - Laxmi

It's not that easy to write on controversial topics & everything that defies the so-called laws of society. The stringent intracies with which they're deeply intertwined in every aspect is unnervingly annoying. Merely talking or propagating about them leads to unnecessary issues leading to dire consequences, thereof due to the stern stereotypes & presumable prejudices in various levels & contexts. Furthermore, the manipulative moral conducts & ethics get involved, which make things more complicated. Especially when we talk about girls or women, who've been subjected to various subjunctive atrocities & subjugated to unspeakable unsympathetic unsurprisingly unsurpassed insurmountable troubles & often chased as the subject of criticism. But they've been unsuccessful. One needs to understand that women are strong, they're equal & perhaps better than men in many ways. People should realise its hightime that they treat them equally & give them the respect they deserve.

Do you ever get the feeling that girls have it less easy than boys? Have you been told to behave 'like a girl’? That you should learn to cook and be nice and keep your legs crossed?
Well, here's the book of Fifty awesome women. Fifty awe-inspiring stories. One defining moment. Scientists, artists, entrepreneurs, scholars, athletes and queens. Trace the journeys of these Indian women and their extraordinary lives.

Women are the most powerful creation of God. They're really mysterious. Yet, the strongest among all sexes. However, since ancient times they've been subjugated to various atrocities & injustices. They've suffered since eons. The most common being - getting them forcefully engaged & married at a tender age without their consent - where they're supposed to be studying, playing, fulfilling their dreams & building their career. People believe that the main purpose of a girl taking birth is to marry, breed children, serve her husband & family, maintain household chores & die peacefully obeying all the worldly norms created by society. This is prevalent predominantly in India, where typical Indian parents believe that - girls are a burden to them & are better off being married at a young age (usual ones ranging less than 24). For them, a girl's education or career hardly matters.

According to me, a girl should get to decide what she wants to do with her life, fulfil her own dreams, when she wants to get married & most importantly, whom she wants to marry. Well that being said, it's not like people follow this norm. Because, for them society, relatives, presumably the age old prejudices & stereotypes play more important roles than their own daughter's lives & dreams. Putting the entire blame on parents wouldn't be fair, for our society plays key role in this process of subjecting women to this treacherous & tenuous torchure. This further gets amplified by the crude objectification, sexual gratification & so on...

Cover is beautiful. It has been exceptionally designed. It's been such a long time since I've come across such a refine work of art. It strikes a great resemblance to some of the best children storybooks we come across during our visits to bookstores. The best part being the gorgeous illustrations which accompany every story - though I felt if it has been hardbound, it would've been much better. Title is apt.

The amount of research/hardwork can be seen & becomes quite evident once you read this book. It's amazing, the execution has been done in a subtle way. The information imparted has been delivered in an effective manner. The amount of research done here self-evident. Writing style has been balanced in such a way, that all age groups will be able to understand & derive benefit from it. Overall, a well balanced, well-written & inspiring book. A must for all the girls, especially for kids!

Girl Power By Neha J. Hiranandani Is A Perfect Inspirational Read With Great Illustrations

Ever passed by a bookstore or shelf and there was this one book cover that was too good to ignore? Something about the illustration and the catchy words along with the perfect blend of colours was so intriguing that you couldn't help but grab the book and start reading it even if the reading age on it is was 6-12 years? Girl Power: Indian Women Who Broke The Rules by Neha J Hiranandani was one such book for me.

Kudos to Niranjan Mishra for the cover design and Niloufer Wadia from the Scholastic Publication team for the great illustrations which makes this book unputdownable. The glossy sheets, small fun facts and snippets were the cherries on top along with being informative.

The book revolves around fifty awesome women, fifty awe-inspiring stories and their one defining moment. It ranged from the broad spectrum of scientists, artists, entrepreneurs, scholars, athletes and even queens. Some of which you might have seen in films or have read about it somewhere; and many unheard of. The best part about is that the personalities' stories are kept alphabetically and you can read any of them at any given point.

The personalities have been defined with perfect adjectives, for instance, Manju Devi- The Coolest Of The Coolies; Noor Khan- Spy Princess; Leila Seth- Legal Legend; Laxmi- Fashion Phoneix among others.

It has a plethora of unheard stories- from a secret radio operator to a 78-year old Kalaripayattu (Kerala's ancient martial arts) fighter; from an accidental entrepreneur- Kiran Mazumdar Shaw to the face of radical writing in the pre-independence period, Girl Power is a power-packed quick read to explore these relatable yet groundbreaking personas.

Girl Power by Neha J Hiranandani is one of the few books that's perfect for kids and adults alike.

Girl Power is a powerful book, with an immense potential to influence many young girls. There are amalgamated some very powerful stories of ordinary girls who made it big through sheer hard work and conviction. They have transformed from rags to riches, but without a prince charming to help and protect these non-damsels in distress. In fact, these are no damsels-in-distress, rather, warrior princesses who dare to fight for their own rights and overcome and slay every dragon that stands in their way.
From doctors to space astronauts, royal queens to radical writers, priests to boxers, there is nothing women cannot achieve if they set their minds on it. yes, it may take time, but through perseverance, everything is possible. After all, can you imagine that there was a time when a woman was not allowed to have a bank account of her own? Or that, women could be dismissed from their jobs just for being pregnant?
With beautiful illustrations from the lives of these women, as well as their portraits, the book is a visual art. I love the bright and bombastic cover which is a foreshadowing of the power that will be emanating from the pages once we open the book. The author has also diversified the group, including women are various different fields of work and as such, revelations were made in this book. I for instance never knew about the presence of women priests! Likewise, there were many surprising stories.
How can I express the awe-inspiring feeling that I got as I read the book? Or the goosebumps that I got so often? Or how frequently my eyes would well up, learning about the triumphs and sheer determination of these women? They are a source of inspiration! And if these snippets could inspire m, imagine how much sway they could have over the impressionable minds of young girls.
I rate this book a solid 5/5 stars and recommend you all to read them yourselves and then gift them to the young girls in your lives.

Millions of girls are subjected to abuse, child labor, trafficking, child marriage, and other offenses. Your gift will go where it’s needed most, protecting girls and women by equipping skilled, local staff to offer training, education, counseling, medical care, small business loans, and other programs that reach women and girls as well as boys — helping to end cycles of gender-based violence.

Want to encourage and empower girls and women? Start right in your own home, workplace, and community. Write a note of thanks to that teacher who encouraged you years ago, pick up coffee for that new mom in your office who’s struggling to balance it all, or tell your own sister, daughter, or mother how much you appreciate them.

I am much obliged to the author for binding all these great stories in a single cover under this very amazing and simple title 'Girl Power'.

Girl Power by Neha J. Hiranandani, is a book perfect for children and adults alike. There learning would vary but it will definitely impart some knowledge to all.

The book consists of 50 short stories of the life of 50 strong and inspiring women. None of the story is longer than 3 pages and the author has been able to say so much in few words by leaving an impact on the reader. The women being talked about belong to different fields- freedom fighters, entrepreneurs, scientists and artists. The tag line of the book is perfect – ‘Indian Women who broke the rules’. The book teaches you how perseverance, dedication and hardwork leads to success. No one emerges out unique, as a winner by following rules. Take any example from the book. Each of these women had to fight for what they wanted to pursue.

Neha has written the book in a simple language, keeping it to the point. The first impression of the book is definitely its vibrant, yellow cover. It instantly made me want to read the book. When I flipped the pages, I came across beautiful, easy to read, child-like font, with ample number of colourful illustrations. The book is meant to inspire the young girls out there and I am sure it will succeed in doing so. Choosing players from different professions is a very wise move as we get a broader perspective. The book can be enjoyed by males and females alike. In fact, I feel they should definitely read it and get motivated. It is very short, young adult book but I surely recommend you to read it once at least.

Every page of it is beautifully designed. Even the blank ones!
The book is a collection of 50 inspirational stories all packed in 109 pages.
Well, these are short stories but definitely impactful.
If this doesn't make you get up and work I don't know what will.
Author Neha's columns have appeared in several popular media platforms like NDTV, Vogue and Huffington Post.
Holding a degree in literature from Wellesley College and Harvard University, she has used her own power to make an impact.
I am completely in love with this book and it is suitable for every age group as well as gender.
The first most thing which I appreciate is that it holds no complaints, for society for parents for culture anything. It shows the power with which these famous personalities annihilated those barriers for them.
You can do it too.
It is Girl Power, but not limited to it.
.
It is very rare that I do this but, for this book it is worthy.
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
For me, it is a 5-star read and also among the very few of my favorite books.

This book is a collection of 50 inspirational stories of women who were freedom fighters, scientists, entrepreneurs, artists, athletes, scholars and queens. This book breaks all the stereotypes. It showcase a glimpse of lives of the women belonging to various eras. I loved the way the author has crafted lives of 50 women who are known and few who are only present in the pages of history books in a corner of library. The illustrations are also worth mentioning and while reading the book I just looked at them with awe. This book is a small way to ignite the fire in us and do things we can but never did. The best part of this book was that the author has mentioned the life of the women in just one or one and a half page which gives birth to curiosity to dwell more deeper into the lives of these women. The only thing that bothered me was price of the book which would make it less accessible to low budget readers.

I rate this book five out five stars for this book is a proof that women have been breaking stereotypes from generations and will continue to do so untill there is no need of it anymore. I recommend this book to everyone. I guarantee that you won't regret reading the book

This book literally reminds me of the bed-time stories my mom used to tell. Fifty inspiring stories about fifty inspiring women in India. I had my eyes on this book ever since I heard this was releasing. With beautiful illustrations on glossy pages and a crisp yet detailed life story of these women - this book is a whole package.
.
What made this book more splendid that it even has the stories of the lesser known women. I didn't know we had a first female fire fighter in India, or the first handicapped woman to climb Mount Everest. In a way this book was an eye-opener for me. These uplifting stories are so well compiled by the author, with quotes one one side. I read this book in a day but I'm going to pick it up time and again whenever I'll feel low.
.
From Kalpana Chawla to Priyanka Chopra, the author has covered the hardworking and impressive (and unfortunate in some cases) stories of women from all areas of work sending us a message - if they can do then why can't we.
