She also made her own vinegar, starting it by mixing a quart of molasses and a pint of yeast. After the vinegar matured, she would likely flavor it with tincture of roses, prepared by pouring whisky over rose petals and keeping the mixture corked for two or three months.
The furniture included a few campstools and unpainted chairs and a dining table composed of three wooden planks stretched across two carpenter’s horses (this also served as an ironing board, or as an overnight bed for unexpected visitors).
