I like this book a lot, though I've only done a couple of the projects as they are written in the book. Now I typically make up my own pattern, and use this for instructions for the heel/foot. I'm also making an afghan in the style of "no guage" but when it's finished it'll be concentric diamonds.

Note: If you've never turned a heel before, find another source to explain, if my explanation doesn't make sense: - for foot patterns such as "quack", when Kristin says "turn heel", it might not make sense at first, but yes, you are working with the 10 heel stitches. Some of those ten you won't knit again until a bit later, but just do what the pattern says and it'll work out fine.
