A fantastically penned story by a very talented author...

Forty-some years ago my uncle gave me a science fiction anthology. It was a thick red hardback that I read from cover to cover. It inspired a lifelong love of the genre. The stories in that book made me think outside the box. They filled me with awe for the imagination it took to write them. That book still remains in my collection today. The title is OMNIBUS OF SCIENCE FICTION, edited by Groff Conklin, a well-known and prolific editor of the genre. It was published in 1952, the Golden Age of Science Fiction. It’s a substantial volume, 562 pages, with 43 stories divided into sections relating to a common theme. Some stories are fun, some are thought-provoking, and some are adventurous. I love them all.

Fly Twice Backward by David McCracken is a very well written alternate history sci-fi novel. I enjoyed the story, character development, and dialogue. There were plenty of plot twists that I didn’t see coming and that added to the book’s mystique. Exciting as it was thought-provoking, the book had humor and romance where the author weaved ‘progressivism, music, movies, and literature into a struggle spanning the globe. Vivid characters propel the action back up through an alternative history toward an uncertain destination.’ It’s been a while since I enjoyed a book this much and couldn’t recommend it highly enough.

There’s something magical about reading fantasy fiction. It speaks to the very thread of my imagination, jolting it to life and transporting it on an exhilarating journey. This book did exactly that. Fans of the Sci-Fi genre will not be disappointed. I’ll be looking forward to reading more from this author in the future. Highly recommended and a well-deserved five stars from me.

“Fly Twice Backward: Fresh Starts in a World of Troubles” is a book written by David McCracken, American author. The cover of the book will certainly attract any reader’s attention, as it caught mine.
This sci-fi novel has it all, humour, emotions, romance and what’s more, it is thought provoking and exciting. Once I started reading I could not put it down. It is definitely a page turner.
This is a thick book that has more than seven hundred pages but the reading flows so naturally that I found myself reading non-stop. The author’s writing style is very good and clear. He does not waste time and pages but he goes to the point, which I thank in many cases. I would like to read some other piece of work of him.
I would certainly recommend reading Fly Twice Backward and I am giving this read five out of five stars.

A breathe of fresh air to the time traveling/butterfly effect genre!!

Format: Kindle Edition [I highly recommend this format in particular of how the author has hyperlinked to many songs, various books, and articles throughout the book. It is much easier to click it than search it from a book.]

Fly Twice Backward: Fresh Starts in Times of Troubles by David McCracken is a multi decade labor of love. It's about a family given the chance to go back in time, when they are each respectively aged 12 after an accident. The lead character is trying to use his knowledge of the future to gather a fortune and mold it in the way he sees as most beneficial to society.

This book combines such intricate parts of history with flavors of ancient aliens with philosophy, and theology. Can our lead heroes overcome the butterfly effect? It isn't as easy as it seems, and at times I was discouraged thinking the truly worst would happen.

I cannot recommend this book enough. David McCracken was able to play with a time traveling concept in a unique way that made this book just about impossible to put down, just having to know how it is all going to end. I think sci-fi and history buffs would surely enjoy this book of "what ifs." I know I did!!

For the author, if it sparks your interest I reside in Herndon, and also attended Northern Virginia Community College, so my heart leapt with excitement when you started mentioning local things!!

As a reader who doesn't care too much for history, FTB lured me back in time and I was pleased. This multi-POV experience is chock full of twists and turns. I couldn't help but admire some characters while loathing others. David and Aleesa stuck out to me and I personally feel as though Aleesa is a woman I will admire years after I closed this book. The author links songs, books and pictures to paint a more precise picture of what's going on while pulling us into the story a little deeper..A unique way to keep sucked into the stories work..I can't help but wonder if the author DID go back in time and started this thing called life over. A reader can imagine. I have my theories. You never know.

David McCracken writes about what we all wish we could do, going back in time and doing the things we wish we did the first time. Fly Twice Backward: Fresh Starts in a World of Troubles will delight the reader as they read about David, a 62 year old man who wakes up one day to find he is 12 years old. Having all the knowledge and wisdom of an older man is a big responsibility for a young man. At first he doesn't want to change a thing, but later he decides he could use this to his advantage.

Fly Twice Backward by David McCracken has creative twists to an alternate time travel plot. Each of the main characters tells their side to the story, though the focus is on David. McCracken brings out many interesting thoughts about traveling back in time. If you can remember your future family, would you do everything the same to not jeopardize their existence? I love the many avenues this novel takes. The ending thought is: does knowing the future really save the future or make things worse?

When I saw the genre of this book was listed as alternative history and Sci-Fi, I must admit even though I’m a retired librarian I had never heard of alternative history. A different outcome to something that happened in history. This most certainly fits the bill. I would also describe it as Sci-Fi and fantasy. It’s a story about something I think everyone wishes could happen. Going back in time and given a chance to make different decisions (or not) than you did the first time. Would you change the future? What would be the outcome? It’s handled with a little of everything, humor, a little romance, action, you name it.

The story made me want to know what the author must be like. Surely a person with a vast imagination. Speaking of vast, this was an exceptionally long book, 700+ pages. Because the POV changed from different characters this broke it up for me, but it is long.
I might add, I finished every page and would recommend it to anyone who wants to “go back in time”. Great read.

Review:
It’s been a while since I read an alternate history/scifi novel. Fly Twice Backward is an extremely well written novel. It is an imaginative and intriguing story about a man who has been through much in his life. He wakes in, what he believes is a dream, and is 12 years old again. Author, David S. McCracken, is able to create this vastly entertaining novel without confusing the reader. I think my favorite part was how well put together it was.
This is a very character driven novel. The author spends more time developing the characters than info dumping to explain the complexities of time travel. I really enjoyed that. We were given enough to understand, but I wasn’t bogged down and was able to really be engrossed in the story.
I really enjoyed this. It was an emotional roller coaster, mixed with awesome scifi and alternate history. The characters are great and I would definitely recommend this one.

"Fly Twice Backward: Fresh Starts in a World of Troubles" by David McCraken is an alternative history/science-fiction story about a man returning to his youth with all the knowledge of an adult. Who hasn't thought and fantasized about the possibilities of that very scenario? Told from multiple points of view and enhanced with links to relevant songs, plays, shows, movies, books, and the like throughout the text, "Fly Twice Backward" has the makings of a classic. There's never a dull moment considering everything this novel includes; time travel, history, romance, fantasy, action, and sci-fi addressing everything from political and environmental issues to morality and love.

This thing is 700+ pages long and it truly could have gone on and on without losing my attention. McCracken is a true story-teller full of imagination and gusto who writes characters a reader can fall in love with. "Fly Twice Backward" is a book I will be recommending a lot now and in the future.
