I once again really enjoyed this modern reboot of the Buffyverse. I continue to love that Jordie Bellaire manages to capture the voices of the characters as they were portrayed in the original show and interweaves storylines that were present much later in the narrative of the show into the origins of the story.
However, one of my favourite elements of the first volume was How Dan Mora's illustrations brought the same faces we know and love into the modern day and I felt that David Lopez's art style in this instalment, didn't manage to match the quality of the narrative, with the characters being unrecognisable throughout most of this.

Not as focused as the first volume. And very little is explained. Xander's deal is only hinted at. When you make that kind of change to a character that everyone reading this already knows, you can't just gloss it all over. That's just poor writing. Bellaire doesn't seem to want to give any explanations so she doesn't back herself into a corner later. I do wish they would have included the FCBD episode in this as well, especially because it's referenced as part of this story. Overall, it felt like a lot of wheel spinning while we wait for the Hellmouth crossover to begin.

I typically like David Lopez's art, but he's tilted his style a little too chiba this time. The book starts to look like a Goth anime with huge doe eyes and dark eyeliner around all the women.

I'm of two really big minds about this. The first volume was freakishly cool to have old favorite characters doing wildly early character arcs super early compared to the TV series or how the plot is only taking a rough outline, cherry-picking some awesome goodies, and throwing them in right away.

The second volume is pretty much the same, but MORE. So much more that I want to say that this Buffy Reboot with all these so familiar characters is just TRASHING the Buffyverse.

Except for one thing: if I just assume that all of this is an alternate universe where everything just happened differently, even WILDLY differently, then I find that I'm having a wild-ass time.

You see, I AM a big Buffy fan. Angel, too. But here I am, rooting for some WEIRD ASS world-breaking going on here. I don't even care if Xander turned into a new living-soul vamp or if Dru is the equivalent to the old Master... now Mistress. It's like all my old wishes that Xander had gotten supernatural or that Dru had a much BIGGER part came TRUE.

So I'm just gonna say that with a few proper expectations, this reboot run is pretty damn awesome.

This was a bit weaker than the spectacular volume 1, but still a great read that keeps pushing the boundaries of the Buffy universe. David López takes over Dan Mora on art, and his style is definitely not as slick and polished, but I am a fan of his and didn't mind the change too much. This volume leads into the Hellmouth crossover, which feels a bit too comic-book-crossovery judging by the setup, but I am still looking forward to it.

Ummm......what the fuck happened??

Why was the illustrator from the first volume replaced with this one? I hate to be mean but shit that was awful artwork. Didn't look like the characters at all and just did not work period.

The plot and how the characters reacted was also bad. Guess I'll not be finishing the next one since it's the same illustrator.

The second volume in the revamped (lol) Buffy series, one with a more modern feel. Unfortunately what it has in updated technology, it lacks in coherence. For most of this volume I had no clue what on earth was going on, and characters feel very our of touch with who they are. I also wasn't keen on the artwork.

I'm unsure if I'll continue with the series to be honest. It's starting to impact my sentimental joy for Buffy, which is not a good thing.

Going for the twitter-friendly headlines, not for a fully-developed story

(Read as single issues)

This story did not work for me at all - this was almost a 1 star rating for me. The big elephant in the room is which was a big part of the marketing for issue four and something that BOOM! were not shy of using to get media coverage with headlines like "anything can happen in this series". The sad truth is that nothing really happened. asses sleeves as needed. Nothing is explained. Nothing is seen. Everything happens in the background. Bellaire seems to consider it unimportant, and well it is, because the characters are all still very underdeveloped at this point. It does not matter if one of them dies.

And the art has taken a big dive in quality with the change of main artist from Vol. 1 to this, the characters often have weird facial expressions that are impossible to decode and look like something from a cheap cartoon.

My main reason for not giving this a 1 star is the Willow-centric issue that puts the comic book format and possibility of changing artists into great use, while exploring the affect that a big sacrifice by Willow has on her. Issues like that are needed to explore the characters.

This was okay.

Buffy having to find a cure for Xander with Willow. Sounds fun right? But it's kind of just a average episode of Buffy. The only truly interesting thing to happen is seeing Willow's past with Xander and also what someone is planning. The rest is by the numbers and not all that great. I also can't stand that everyone's eyes always look bugged out.

A 2.5 out of 5.

Buffy-the-Vampire-Slayer-005-016bb
(are those candles floating or something??)

This was an incredible disappointment after how much I loved Vol. 1. The big plot twist introduced at the end of Vol. 1 wasn't really addressed in any substantive way and the fun snark that I associate with the Buffy universe was almost completely missing. The story didn't seem to know where it was going; most of the issues in the collection had very little plot. I also didn't particularly care for the art style of Vol. 2 -- the characters looked pretty different from Vol. 1 and everyone's expressions looked relatively similar throughout the volume.

Overall, I honestly wish I hadn't read this. Vol. 1 was essentially perfect and this was...not. Based off what I've heard about later installments, I think this may be the end of the road for me.

A bude to fakt pekelná jízda!
Z BLÁTA DO LOUŽE...

A treba proste ďalší diel aby to človek pochopil 😞 čiže celkom dobrý cliffhanger.

Prvá veta: Cos nám to udělal?

Mmm this wasn't as good as I expected after reading and loving the first volume. The art style was quite different than in Vol. 1 and the characters didn't quite look like themselves. Also, the storyline was all over the place and left me mostly confused. This makes me sad because I hoped to collect all volumes, but now I am not sure.

(Read as Single Issues)

I agree with other reviewers that the art here seemed like a step back, with some characters being unrecognizable from amorphous blobs.

But I still am so happy to read some new Buffy and love where the story is going, so that elevates my rating here.

An unfocused follow-up to a lackluster reboot - and a poorly curated one to boot! Seriously, you can't refer to events that occur in an uncollected comic that are vital to the plot (FCBD giveaway) without AT LEAST an editorial aside/recap, and ideally the inclusion of the aforementioned work.

I would recommend this for fans of the tv show, and lovers of supernatural things.

I really like the direction the story is going in. I was a little confused in the beginning, the transition between volume one and two isn’t the best so it takes a minute to figure out what’s going on.

The art in this volume was actually a little jarring at times, especially the way the artist drew Willow’s face. It just wasn’t as smooth or detailed as in the first volume and was quite inconsistent. However as a whole I have to say it was a very enjoyable read and I’m excited to see what the creators do next.

I really liked the first volume of this modern Buffy retelling, but the second just didn't quite have what the first one did to make it work so well. I felt out of the loop for a good chunk of it and the art didn't always do the characters justice. Sometimes I had a tough time figuring out who they were all supposed to be.

Buffy and friends deal with the fallout of the revelation that she is the Slayer, while Xander struggles with his new vampiric side, and the march to Hellmouth continues as Drusilla makes her move!

The character dynamics are the main draw to this series so far. The action is great, and the stakes feel suitably high, but the relationship between the core 3 is definitely outstripping all that. As Xander and Willow grow closer and then apart in the attempt to deal with Xander's new vampire-ness, Buffy and Robin Wood get acquainted, and Giles begins to spin out of control. It's all very Buffy, and I love it.

We lose Dan Mora on art in favour of David Lopez, who is as good as he always is, if a bit heavy on the GIANT EYES. This isn't an anime, David, calm it down a bit.

This series is getting better with each episode. It's nice to see some characters from the TV series who died very soon well alive and well. Basically they are taking the basics of old Buffy to build something anew . It's a good approach but it could backfire in the future. I think this Buffy story is re-inventing itself with great success and I can't get enough of it. Just love it. Thanks Joss and Co.

“I’m lucky to have friends like you and Buffy. I’m lucky to be alive and for that..I am happy”.
Honestly I enjoyed this graphic novel a lot. I missed Buffy so much lately and this book brought me all the feels. I miss Sunnydale and the characters so much. Ngl I don’t dig the art style of this volume as much as the first one. I was not a fan of it but the plot here is more interesting even though there are some holes here and there.
In this volume Buffy deals with the aftermath of what drusilla did to her friend Xander. Her an Willow have to find the soul tie so Xander will survive. Honestly I think the plot was not well explained. They went ahead and found a snake demon and willow gave up part of her soul in order to get the soul tie and I thought that would save Xander from vampirism but now he is half vampire half human and it wasn’t mentioned in the beginning. Also the blurb says angel is here but we don’t even get to see him, he attends the Halloween party with a mask and that’s it.
Robin, buffys crush works for the Council and only willow found him suspicious during this book.
Speaking of willow she had a bad experience after losing half of her soul and she has weird dreams about her soul and the hellmouth but it was never explained what was that about.
Also drusilla finds a dagger to open the hellmouth during an Egyptian exhibition hosted by Joyce (buffys mom) and it was too easy? Like Giles got it first and then Jenny gave it to drusilla to save Joyce? Idk I was expecting more of it. Now the hellmouth is open and we don’t know what will happen next.
I will read the next volume bc they are quick, easy reads and if you are a big fan of Buffy you are going to enjoy it but if you aren’t I wouldn’t recommend this for you

One thing I am quickly loving more and more along this reboot series is how "repurposed" everything is yet it also stays the same. For example... Robin Wood is a character in this but he is the same age as everyone and in school with them. Drusilla is our main enemy at this point and she just showed us the Seal of Danzalthar (which is not in the show really until Season 7). But Giles has the same apartment and complex, Joyce still works at the museum (and surprise she just opened an exhibit with a dangerous artifact - but not a mask this time!), and Dark Willow is haunting Willow's dreams. It definitely helps to KNOW the original story and show so well which makes these twists more fun, but I think anyone could come into this reboot series and have a great time.

AND I LOVE the art gallery (art pages? idk) at the end of these. They are great and actually highlight former episodes, etc. Great stuff!

I really liked Willows' storyline in this one,and I also thought it left off on a great cliffhanger. However, some of the art style choices were a little mind-boggling. Some spreads felt too rudimentary and rough to belong in the finished copy (especially when you are going to slap on a cover on the front that is as heart breakingly gorgeous as this one is...it just gives you false expectations of the kind of spreads you think you will get inside)
