It’s the worst day of Millie’s life. She’s just lost everything: job, marriage and home which is all her own fault. What else do you call sacrificing ten years to support the cheating husband who just called you frumpy, dumpy and beige? Then she reads a job advert for a plain woman to work for a cranky old man on some tiny island in the English Channel. It sounds like the

A blend of the old and the new in this delightful debut novel!
Millie is having the worst day ever, made only worse by crashing into George's car. Determined not to wallow and trying to maintain honor and self-respect when both have been denied to her, she ends the day by applying for a job that can give her a fresh start.
Believing all the horrible things her ex said about her, she feels entirely qualified for the role of companion that requires someone plain, unattractive, and even a little frum ...more

Dumped and betrayed by her horrible husband, Millie embarks on a journey from heartbroken to happy. The description of the island was so good it made me want to go there and the characters all leapt right off the page, George and Millie especially. A well written, lovely romance which I highly recommend.

I received this ARC for free via booksirens in exchange for an honest review, all opinions are my own.
When Millie is dumped and betrayed by her horrible pig of a husband and a terribly day to follow, she then falls a role of a companion after taking on board what nasty things her ex had told her, surely she was qualified for such a boring and plain role?

The cover of the novel highlights the genre perfectly. I knew what I was getting into and fully expected to endure whimsical humor as I read about a quirky heroine trying to find her way.
Its exactly as advertised. To my reluctant and pleasant surprise, the book was breezy, not overtly eccentric, easy to read, and felt like a summer romcom. Nothing complicated, the focus is very much on the main couple. All the elements are quintessential romcom stereotypes, complete with a girl gang and a makeov ...more

I enjoyed the overall story and plot of this book. I've given it three stars because there were quite a few formatting and spelling errors that took away from the reading of the book. I enjoyed the characters but felt as if they could have had a deeper and richer relationship with more small, meaningful moments. I would have liked a bit more closure at the end of the story, but overall this novel was a quick read t ...more

What a heart-warming happy read! Overall, this was a lovely book and a fun journey to read with fun characters and a fantastic setting.
The best thing about this book, in my mind, was the setting. I totally want to live on the island of La Canette. It sounds beautiful and is the perfect place for a romance story.

A fairy tale on its own or a cross between Ugly Duckling and Cinderella. You choose…
A fairy tale doesn’t have to reside in reality and this book was superior in its telling of a forlorn young woman on her worst day ever who became the Heroine with a capital H in her own life. Others have also written about the quaint little island of La Canette which is as much a “character” as any of the breathing sort. If my French had been just a wee bit better, I would have realized La Canette means Duckling ...more

One star had to be deducted because of formatting errors and the like. In all honesty, I would have been willing to overlook them, but they were numerous.
I started this book (errors not withstanding) at a 5 star for the first ~2/3. I enjoyed Millie and her journey, and I thought the author stayed true to the character she developed. The relationship dynamic between her and George kept me interested as well. Unfo ...more

Good story
The blurb on this one caught my attention. ( so not my style I know lol)
So I decided to read it and I must say I was not disappointed from the start I wanted to know more, Millie off the bat seemed like she wasn't some damsel but a fierce woman even when broken and I think that's what kept me reading the most. This story was light and enjoyable with some pretty great quotes and some LOL moments and I read it all in one sitting because I refused to put it down so here I am at 2am writ ...more

Who is Millie? How does she know Henry? What conversation is replaying in her head? I find that I really like George and even his crotchety old father! Took me almost no time to warm up to George. His father took a bit more time. What happens when Henry shows up at Millie's job is just a hoot and a half!!! There were a number of misunderstandings, distrust, and assumptions that happened in this story. The question begs, "Will we find out the truth about everything and will we get an HEA?"

This book reminded of back in my teens when I would read the Harlequin romance books that had a mostly white cover with a drawing of a man and women in some sort of embrace and the women's eyes were probably closed and lips almost puckered for a kiss, then man leaning into them, or standing behind them almost ready to kiss their shoulder.
Oh - sorry, got trapped down memory lane. This was a sweet book. It went on a bit longer than I would have preferred and had zero steaminess to it, but was well ...more

Millie believes everything her rotten husband has ever said about her. She sees herself as frumpy and dumpy and completely unattractive because that is what he has told her. She has put her whole life and ambitions on hold to enable Henry to pursue his career and lavish lifestyle. When she finally realises he is a cheat who has simply been using her she finds the courage to leave. A series of coincidences lead her to a new job and new life on the beautiful island of La Cannette where she finally

I could've finished this book within two days if it wasn't for... well, wanting to delay ending it. For one thing, it was funny:
'Millie realized she'd been holding her breath and blew it out. I can't believe I was dreaming about kissing him.'
However, all of a sudden there it was: the end. Where did that came from? Whatever happened to George to change into a sort of new him? If it wasn't for his out of the blue reappearance, it would've been 4 stars.
Yet, I am intrigued to know what might happen ...more

Millie's life was turned upside down all in the matter of a few hours. Everything she had known in her adult life, over. Now she has to pick up the pieces. After a disastrous first meeting with George, he unknowingly leads her to plain Jane wanted and turns her life around. What follows is a series of events that you just have to read. This book is not one of my normal reads, and is a bit longer than it needed to be, but a cute read. I enjoyed George's father at times, even when he was so grumpy

Plain Jane Wanted was a feel good story with a likable main character and a vivid setting. Millie thinks she has had her worst day ever, but what she does not realize is that her life is about to change completely. I enjoyed this sweet romance about starting over, and what a great place to have a fresh start! I loved the descriptions of the Channel Islands so much that I had to look them up. I missed this part in geography I guess, it very interesting. I received an advance review copy for free.

I loved this book , it was the first one I've read from Rose Amberley. The way she takes us on Millie's journey of self discovery and growth after such a bad time and marriage, is heartwarming and inspiring. At the same time we read about George and also witness his transformation while resolving some personal issues and dealing with other ones. There is drama, humor and romance in this story along with a very interesting storyline.

I loved the book 4.5 *
Even when the H "stretched" it a little but i understood it.
She was growing from do-all-for-love to a independent woman
(I don't like to call her a doormat because
they are for me understandable reasons for her behavious).
They grew together from their different "experiences" and even if I am impatient by myself - for them it works.
A half star is missed because oh her ex-SOB. I wanted him "bleeding' (because of my own experience with some SOB....) ...more

Brave Millie
It is so easy to tumble down and fall back in love, and lose yourself in it. But it takes courage to say no, and to let go, to respect our own self first, and to let others know that you command respect.
Millie stood her ground and overcame all her insecurities. And in doing so, she also helped George learn to respect her as an equal partner, friend, lover, and wife.

I read this in one go. Millie's sweetness and strength really made me feel for her and George is just straight up hotness with a side of ice. I was on that island with them. Loved the characters, loved the scenery, loved the writing, loved how Millie made George melt, and definitely loved Blue Sage Café. Looking forward to more.

Lovely story, sweet and predictable, as expected, points for walking the line between romance and independence with grace. There were a few missing words; example: "we won't about it anymore", the missing word would be "talk"; nothing deal-breaking to substract stars in my opinion.
