Susan Herbert (1945-2014) was a genius. And I'm not saying it because she painted cats and re-painted most of the famous art classics in a feline way, so to say. I'm saying it because she paid a great attention to every detail, just like she'd paint an absolutely non humorous paintings and remained faithful to the techniques of the original pieces. You can call these parodies, I guess. But these are extremely delightful parodies. I had a LOT of fun. Go google it yourself.

Ідеальна книга, буде справжнім скарбом для тих хто любить мистецтво і котів. Я з таких людей. Неймовірне задоволення гортати книгу, насолоджуватись малюнками, розглядати їх. Навіть можна дізнатись щось нове, наприклад я відкрила для себе картини якими раніше не цікавилась.

The detail in these paintings is amazing. Every time I open the book and one of the paintings that I enjoyed the most, I find something new about it.
I've gone through all the pages more than once, yet I still don't feel like I've "read it" because there's so much more to explore. It is art mixing with funny references and jokes.
What I don't like is that the author spoilt me. I wouldn't think that the portraits are plain and boring if I wouldn't have seen some amazing renderings of complicated paintings. But unfortunately, the simpler paintings (perhaps the ones that concentrate more on the "paint" and less on the "cats" part) were too boring for me.
Overall I loved the idea and the artist is obviously very talented. I got this book as a birthday gift and it is definitely one of the best gifts.

One of the standout books from my childhood was a picture book teaching various breeds of cats by personifying them into adult paintings. To this day, I still occasionally think of that book (and have it stored away in a box). I have found the modernized-adult version of this book in Susan Herbert’s, “Cats Galore: A Compendium of Cultured Cats”.
During her lifetime, Susan Herbert (d. 2014) was an established and beloved artist known for her paintings incorporating cats into famous theatrical scenes or fine art works. “Cats Galore” showcases her pieces in a colorful, full-color, hard-covered coffee table book encompassing charm, quirkiness, and a dose of silliness but all the while celebrating famous art.
“Cats Galore” is divided into three sections (Cats in Art, Cats on Stage, and Cats in the Movies) with each section being (mostly) chronological in the pieces which Herbert re-imagined using cats as the subjects. These feature captions with the title, date, and artist of the “real” piece. The striking feature of Herbert’s work is her ability to recreate a multitude of art styles and the focus on detail. Each painting is true to the original but with the inclusion of ‘cute’ details such as rats and mice in place of dogs or cats from the original paintings. Even the cat species chosen by Herbert for each painting makes sense and truly brings both her work and the original pieces to life.
Although “Cats Galore” features no text (aside from the captions); the book is charming, entertaining, and certainly fun for cat and art lovers. Some of the paintings will awe the reader while others induce a chuckle. Aside from adults, “Cats Galore” would also be a great way to introduce children to works of art in a friendly, warm way before showing them the real thing. Basically, “Cats Galore” is wonderful for all ages.
The final section (Cats in the Movies) is the portion most geared towards the general reader as the films are recognizable and part of pop culture. It is a strong way to wrap up the showcase of Herbert’s work.
“Cats Galore” is a silly but cute coffee tale book perfect for browsing for Herbert fans or cat lovers (it definitely makes a great gift for such readers). The presentation is strong and the content is quirky. However, the book is very targeted and not necessarily for everyone (I could see some people labeling it as ‘dumb’). Despite this, “Cats Galore” is an inviting book.

Я кайфонула. Роботи Сьюзан неймовірні - вгадуються і персонажі, і навіть стиль художників оригіналів. Сподобалось спочатку впізнавати картину і автора, а тоді вже читати підпис. А в розділі з кадрами з фільмів навіть вирази обличчь акторів передані реалістично.
Красиве доповнення в домашню бібліотеку, яке стане приємною розвагою для гостей.

Well, if you’re not a cat lover now you surely will be after one or two pages. If you’re not an admirer of the work and imagination of artist Susan Herbert you definitely will be as her water color paintings have been created not only with paint but with charm, affection and rich imagination.
Cats Galore A Compendium Of Cultured Cats is a book I’ve returned to again and again not only for my own pleasure but to share with friends - none of whom could select a favorite as all of the paintings delight viewers.
The subtitle is apropos as Susan Herbert has given us feline versions of unforgettable works of art as well as well remembered scenes from the theater, opera and films. Words cannot describe the surprise and pleasure found in seeing Goya’s The Clothed Maja in feline form or a scene from The Red Shoes with a blue-eyed kitty on point. Regarding films one finds the famous beach scene in From Here To Eternity, the full cast of Casablanca and more. There are 326 illustrations in all, each bringing appreciative smiles.
I am grateful for Ms. Herbert’s talent and in awe of the gifts she has given us. My copy of Cats Galore is already well thumbed and surely much enjoyed. Highly recommended!

In honor of National Cat Lady Day, here's the book I purchased at the National Museum in Naples, Italy because... cats! Translated title: CatWorks: A Compendium of Cultured Cats for cat lovers & art lovers. From impressionists, to Hollywood, to "Feline with a Pearl Earring" cats rule in this fabulous book. I bought the Italian version (I was in Italy, after all) but have noted that it is available in English on #amazon. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Jaka jest u Was pogoda? U mnie jesień w tej gorszej odsłonie. Trochę pada, jest zimno i pochmurno… Zazwyczaj w takie dni kompletnie nic nie chce mi się robić. A co gdyby…
A co gdyby do akcji wkroczyły puchate stworzenia? Dajmy na to, że koty! 🐈 Wiecie takie słodkie, artystyczne i fotogeniczne. W książkach Susan Herbert koty są wszędzie! Nie tylko mruczą i zjadają słynne saszety ale też pozują, malują, uśmiechają się. Od sarkofagu Tutanchamona przez Narodziny Wenus i Dziewczynę z perłą po autoportret Vincenta Van Gogha oraz Charlie’go Chaplina! A może raczej Charlie’go Kocina.🐱
W tych książkach to koty rządzą! Susan Herbert stworzyła coś niesamowitego! Umieściła koty w najsłynniejszych obrazach. Ps. fani kina też znajdą coś dla siebie 🎬. Zachowała oryginalny styl artystów dzięki czemu wszystko wygląda bardzo spójnie „tak jakby nic tam nie było zamieniane”. Każdy obraz jest podpisany i bardzo łatwo znaleźć pierwowzór. Cała książka jest absolutnie przepięknie wydana w twardej oprawie z wysokiej jakości kartkami (takimi grubymi i śliskimi). Chyba nie muszę mówić, że jestem zakochana 🤭. Po pierwsze jestem totalną kociarą i właścicielką jednej takiej puchatej kuleczki a po drugie moją pasją jest historia sztuki. A wiecie, że Susan Herbert pracowała kiedyś jako ilustratorka Angielskiej Opery Narodowej ? Teraz specjalizuje się w kocich obrazach, tym samym połączyła swoje dwie wielkie miłości: do kotów i do malarstwa.

Ta recenzja będzie troszeczkę inna niż zazwyczaj. Dlaczego inna? Bo książki o których wam dzisiaj opowiem praktycznie nie mają słów! Do tego nie występują w nich ludzie, a głównymi bohaterami są... koty! A mowa tu oczywiście o przepięknych albumach autorstwa Susan Herbert pod tytułem ,,Galeria kotów. Historia sztuki z pazurem" oraz ,, Nowa galeria kotów. druga odsłona sztuki z pazurem". Książki te zawierają zbiór przepięknych obrazów, które zdominowały koty. Kocie postacie da się zobaczyć wszędzie. Narodziny kociej Wenus? Żaden problem. Kocia Monalisa? Też się znajdzie! Te albumy to nie podręczniki dla studentów ASP, a świetny sposób na umilenie czasu dla każdego miłośnika kotów.
Dlaczego warto mieć tę książkę?

Всім котолюбам активізуватися! Видавництво «Абабагаламага» випустило "Галерею котів" — найкращий подарунок любителям пухнастиків і поціновувачам мистецтва ever. Як добре, що у мене є друзі якраз такої комбінації, щоб можна було їм подарувати цю книгу, а заразом і собі погортати
Книга — це 326 кольорових ілюстрацій Сьюзан Герберт, на яких вона відтворила відомі картини, сцени з театру та кіно. От тільки всі дійові особи там — коти! І це, скажу я вам, прекрасно.
Котики все роблять краще, а мистецтво й поготів. А ще стає очевидним вся штучність людських соціальних ігор, етикетів, правил, стародавніх гардеробів... Коли бачиш кицю в корсеті, яка схилилася в реверансі, думаєш: "А нащо так все ускладнювати?").
Гладьте котиків, всотуйте мистецтво і будьте простіше ;)

November 11, 2019Po "Galerii kotów" spodziewałam się troszeczkę czegoś innego. Kocica na okładce właściwie sugerowała zawartość, ale z niewiadomych przyczyn liczyłam na coś w stylu wyboru kotów z oryginalnych obrazów i filmów. Ta galeria zawiera jednak kocie improwizacje na temat znanych dzieł sztuki. Kocia Mona Lisa, futrzaste Stworzenie Adama, Vincent Van Kot, Clint Eastfuur i inne takie mruczące niespodzianki.
Książkę pozostawiam bez oceny, bo czytania w niej tyle, ile kot napłakał, ale dla miłośników tych zwierzątek zapoznanie się z nią będzie na pewno przyjemnością. W końcu każda nowa porcja mruczących kulek jest mile widziana :)

Cats Galore is a collection of three of Herbet's art books (Cats in Art, Cast on Stage, and Cats in the Movies). I first became aware of Herbert's cat illustrations of Shakespeare's plays, and wanted to let the girls enjoy them. But it turned out that her Cats in Art (re-imaginings of famous paintings with cats instead of people) were a bigger hit. The girls enjoyed finding the paintings we have studied during Morning Time and had fun with their delightful absurdity.

Divertentissimo. Divorato in mezz'ora (ok, non c'è molto testo), poi immediatamente riaperto con più calma per gustare i mille particolari, la padronanza delle tecniche pittoriche, e soprattutto la meravigliosa abilità di Susan Herbert per dare a ogni gatto l'esatta espressione che l'umano aveva nel quadro originale. La grazia con cui Venere appena nata, in piedi sulla sua conchigliona, in mancanza di lunghi capelli cela la zona strategica con la sua lunga coda, è una delizia.

4.5 stars. What a delightful book! Over 300 pages of the author's artistic interpretations of cats in art, cats on stage, and cats in the movies. A well done, quality book for cat and culture lovers.

Малюнки дуже красиві, а котики - няшні. Єдиний недолік, що малюнки однотипні. Картини відомих художників відрізняються унікальними авторськими техніками живопису, і в цієї художниці, яка малює котиків, теж свій стиль. Ну і всі картини-котокопії відомих картин витримані саме у цьому стилі.
