This essential guide to a growth mindset for girls
Cultivating a can-do spirit can do wonders for young girls— The Girls' Guide to Growth Mindset shows you how.
I read Carol Dweck's "Mindset" in Q4 2019 and Angela Duckworth's "Grit" in Q1 2020, so was eager to pick up this book. Both authors are referenced therein (no surprise!), and their work is made approachable for the younger reader. Awesome!
Bullet points, paired with plenty of color, icons, drawings, and open space to journal, make this a fun and interactive journal for ages 10+.
The downside for me was an early reference to pronouns of choice used throughout the book. If the author's point was that a boy could pick up a book with "girl" in the title and female pronouns throughout, and still get something out of it, awesome. If the author's point was that transgender has a place there ... I found that unnecessary and out of place.
I received a copy of the book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
I read this book with my young granddaughter in mind, and like the themes of having a growth mindset, getting to know yourself better, identifying your passions, why making mistakes is important, growing confident in your personal power, controlling your self-talk, and not to let anyone (including yourself!) set limits on what you can do. I also enjoyed the quotes scattered throughout the book.
Easy-to-read and informative, this book will help any pre-teen focus on unleashing her learning power and potential and growing into her best self.
I received a copy of this book from RockRidgePress with their hope that I would review it. All opinions stated here are my own.
This is a delightful book that I wish I had as an 8-12 year old girl! Growth mindset is so important for kids, especially girls who are trained in female socialization from an extremely young age. The book is full of color, and has sections for writing and reflection. As Coates mentions in the beginning, this works for boys too. If your child or student is visually impaired, just be aware that there are some pages of white writing on a peach background that might be difficult to read. I loved the inspirational quotes, the bios, the charts, and the way this book was organized. Thank you, Callisto, for the review copy.
Yes! The message, the delivery, the inclusive graphics, the feel of the paper. Yes. I just bought this for my niece as well. I am in my 30's and found great value for myself in these activities and challenges. Women are changing the world, and changing their mindsets, too! Thanks to Carol Dweck, and to Kendra for making this book! <3
Very readable language to pre-teen readers with plenty of interactive writing activities that help to practice the mindset "theories". I love the way the author gradually and patiently introduces various concepts like neuroplasticity, grit, and passion to young readers. A quick read but even helpful to a 32-year-old...
This was really great. I love that it is a fill in book! I get it for my middle school daughter and she has read part of it by herself and I plan for us to read it together.
