Coucou the owl thinks he is ugly and therefore stays hidden during the day. One night he meets a beautiful swallow who is lost; he is smitten with her and takes her home. He feels safe because it is so dark that she can't see his face. They meet several nights, then she tells him that she wants to have a party for him. Now he's in a quandry about how he can go without his face being seen.
