Whether we are born into the world a blank page has been argued since the time of Aristotle. Is it nature or nurture that makes us who we are? Do we choose our own fate, or are we chosen for the roles we play?

Serena Clay is a golden girl living in a soulful, turbulent time. Beautiful, intelligent, pragmatic, and so well cared for, one would think she’d be better prepared

First things first—Lily Java can write her ass off. I literally stopped at one point in this story and said that aloud because I was just overwhelmed with how beautiful her words were. Her prose is lyrical and gorgeous.

In Ethan's Choice, we meet Ethan and his complicated family, and watch him fall in love with Serena Clay. We see how his family relationships impact his newfound life with his love, and the choices he makes as a friend, son, lover, and a man.

But it isn't just the plot here that's

Ethan. Ethan, man!

The title was fitting for this story. The author took us through much anguish and back again with this emotional story. Ethan loved Serena with a deep passion. The decisions he made were meant for her. His dad and uncle's lifestyle wasn't what he wanted for Serena. My heart ached when Ethan' s pulled into a nightmare he had no hand in making, and I was exhausted. However, the story felt exhilarating with each revelation. Finally, the kind words the author spoke about the sugges

Lily Java amazes me, first of all, as an author, because she’s done something spectacular in writing a duet of more than six hundred pages! Secondly, this first story, Ethan’s Choice, itself is a tour de force. Java writes about Ethan and Serena, their meeting, their falling in love, and the baggage they each bring into a relationship juxtaposed against a backdrop of the Bronx in the 1970’s and 1980’s . Her words draw the reader into the boroughs of NYC as if you lived and breathed in the “city ...more

HUNTAYYYYYY!!! Getcho life and read this sprawling, epic saga now!

A little background: Ethan's Choice is the story of Ethan and Serena Vance, Elliott Vance's parents from the book Blackbirds. You don't necessarily have to read Blackbirds first, but it puts a lot of things into perspective with this book.

Ethan Vance: Brother man is as intense and passionate as the earth revolving around the sun. I literally could not put this book down. Ethan grew up privileged but at a cost. His pops and uncle a

I need to properly give this phenomenal writer her due through this review. Lily Java is a literary fiction writer who weaves intimate and authentic stories. What I really appreciate about Lily's delivery in this particular book was her ability to capture the essence of each time period whether it was the soundtrack of the 70s or the political tapestry of the 90s. I loved this story through and through. While you may not come across an abundance of Lily Java's works, you will always find quality ...more

Wow! I can't wait to read part II

This story had me all nostalgic and missing some of the characteristics of the Bronx that makes it special. Ethan and Serena's introduction is beautiful and poignant. And their separation is heartbreaking. Both have their flaws that make them frustrating to read about at times because you become emotionally invested in their drama and want to see them win.

This story was amazing. Kudos to Lily Java on such a remarkable novel. I loved the vivid descriptions for everything (the neighborhood, the clothes, even the 1980's time period). I wanted to hate Ethan for leaving Serena but I respected him for providing for her and their child...and for reaching out to her Dad to be there when he left. Can't wait to read Serena's Vow.

I loved the journey...

I loved reading about the journey of Ethan and Serena's love story. I also, loved the relationship between Ethan and his brother Eddie as well as Serena and her parents. I can't wait to read the conclusion in Serena's Vow.

Great Read!!!

I've really enjoyed Ethan and Serena's story. I love that there was a slow build up each character as that gives a greater appreciation.
