October 6, 2022I love astronauts' memoirs. As the author says, because of technology, she is "where no human being should ever be." I will never be there, it's more than a foreign country even though it is closer to me at only 250 miles distant than any foreign country, I will never know it. But Samanthat does. And I suppose, like the books on mortality I read, it's because I will never truly know what it's really like, and the closest I can get is in books.

L'ho già detto vero che mi piacciono da matti le ragazze toste? E la Sam è tostissima, simpatica, intelligente e il suo libro molto interessante. La parte in cui descrive la vita sulla ISS poi, è scorrevolissima, allegra, avvincente.
LA prima parte, quella sulla preparazione alla missione è un po' più "tecnica", spiega cose, serve attenzione. A me è sembrata molto interessante, può però sembrare un po' meno appassionante.
NB: in fondo alla mia edizione c'è un glossarietto MOLTO utile per chi, come me, si perde fra gli acronimi.

Bellissimo racconto di un viaggio molto esclusivo.
Tempo fa ho seguito il documentario su Kelly Scott (astronauta rimasto un anno sulla ISS), ma quel racconto non rende l'idea della preparazione necessaria ad una esperienza così.
Questo libro, infatti, si sofferma molto sulla fase di addestramento, tre anni e mezzo, a fronte di una permanenza di quasi sette mesi in orbita.
Molto brava l'autrice, oltre che essere stata capace di tale avventura, a manifestare i suoi stati d'animo determinati anche dalla ferma volontà di riuscire in tutti i test, fisici, cognitivi, tecnologici che sono indispensabili a gestire tutte le situazioni che si possono verificare in dinamiche così particolari e pericolose.
La sua professionalità ha riempito d'orgoglio tutte le donne, tutti gli italiani, tutti gli europei.
La sua esperienza è frutto di studio e tenacia nel voler materializzare un sogno.
Non tutti potranno o vorranno essere astronauti, ma il suo esempio deve valere per ogni desiderio profondo che si vuole concretizzare.

Cosa posso dire.....STUPENDO!!!Che bellezza leggere di grandi donne che riescono ad avere possibilità così uniche e meravigliose grazie a tenacia, studio folle e passione a mille...
se siete appassionati un pochino di Spazio, cosmologia et similia è assolutamente da leggere ; non nego che la lunghezza del libro si fa sentire molte volte durante la lettura, forse un po' prolisso in taluni passaggi ma la narrazione comunque fa rimanere incollati al libro
Altra cosa particolare che vivrete sarà " la Sindrome povera me non ho combinato un caxxo nella mia misera vita" ridendo in altro sito di recensioni libri, tutti i lettori che avevano letto questo libro sostenevano la stessa cosa.... questa donna è perfetta e capiterà a volte di sentirsi dei poveri buoni a nulla al confronto....

After reading the autobiographies of three NASA astronauts (Hadfield, Massamino and Kelly) I was delighted to find the memoir of Italian ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti (also the only woman in the ESA astronaut corps) to get an impression of what it means to be a European astronaut. I was not disappointed, it's full of interesting information about the training facilities in Cologne, Houston and Star City, the astronaut selection process of the European Space Agency and of course her six months on the ISS.
The writing is a bit more technical and less personal than with the aforementioned authors, so I would only recommend this to real space nerds. Samantha is a lovely, positive person with an impressive biography to boot. What makes her completely awesome is the fact that she donated all the money she made off this book to UNICEF.
I hope she gets to fly to the ISS again, all fingers crossed!"

Nachdem ich nun schon die ein oder anderen Astronauten-Biografie gelesen habe, muss ich sagen, dass mir diese zusammen mit Chris Hadfields An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth am besten gefallen hat. Klar, die von Alexander Gerst 166 Tage im All ist auch nicht schlecht, aber das vorliegende Buch ist tatsächlich ein Bericht ihrer langen Reise, statt "nur" ein Bildband wie der von Astro Alex.
Ein Buch für die alle die wissen wollen, wie man Astronaut wird.
Was mir besonders gefallen hat, war das Auswahlverfahren und die Beschreibung der Ausbildung inklusive der technischen Aspekte. Das fand ich höchst detailliert und interessant! Außerdem ist es mal ganz schön alles aus der Sicht einer Frau - und dann noch einer Frau meiner Größe - geschildert zu bekommen. Es ist einfach ein doch ganz anderer Blickwinkel!

Will I ever turn down as astronaut's memoir? Never! I was so excited to read Samantha Cristoforetti's Diary of an Apprentice Astronaut,especially because a year or so ago I read Terry Virts' book about his experiences, and he was Samantha's crewmate on their mission. I've also read Scott Kelly's book, and he also happened to be on at least part of the same stay in the ISS! (At this point, I'm beginning to feel like I was up there with them, which is GREAT. Let me dream.)
I thought Samantha's memoir was very unique, and especially - very warm and welcoming to the reader. I felt like I was there together with her. There are other things about this memoir that were unique as well, and I talk about them more in my full review, which you can find here:

One of the main things that especially touched me was that all royalties from this book go to UNICEF. Samantha really is an amazing human being.

Un diario che è la storia professionale e umana di una donna dal forte carattere scientifico e pragmatico, ma allo stesso tempo dotata di una sensibilità umana che ho trovato disarmante. Si passa dall'illustrazione tecnica (e para-ingegneristica, il linguaggio adottato è chiaramente rivolto ad un pubblico ampio, come giusto che sia) di varie procedure addestrativo-operative a riflessioni sulla condizione umana particolare e universale che mi hanno profondamente toccato. Non mancano citazioni letterarie (ma anche da nerd, nel senso buono del termine) che abbelliscono senza appesantire il racconto onesto e pulito di un'avventura che pur avvenuta ai confini della nostra atmosfera, ha un sapore di eccezionalità.
Quasi mai mi trovo a sottolineare di continuo i passaggi di un libro, ma qui è stato inevitabile.

Kurzmeinung:
In "Die lange Reise – Tagebuch einer Astronautin" gibt die ESA Astronautin Samantha Cristoforetti Einblick in einen der außergewöhnlichsten Jobs der Welt. Vom strengen Auswahlverfahrne über die anstrengende Ausbildung bis zum aufregenden Aufenthalt im All lässt uns die Autorin teilhaben. Teils etwas langatmig, aber dann auch wieder wirklich spannend und fesselnd.
Meine Meinung:
Bei diesem Buch hatte ich gemischte Gefühle. Cristoforettis Erlebnisse sind sehr interessant und besonders ihr Aufenthalt auf der ISS, der Internationalen Raumstation, fand ich unglaublich spannend. Diese Seiten habe ich regelrecht verschlungen. Leider bilden sie nur einen relativ kleinen Teil des Buches und die Seiten bis dahin haben sich teilweise sehr in die Länge gezogen. Sehr ausgiebig berichtet Cristiforetti vom langen Weg, bis man Astronautin werden kann. Vom aufwändigen Auswahlverfahren, den zahlreichen Trainings, Tests und Reisen. Auch diese Aspekte fand ich zwar spannend, allerdings sind die Beschreibungen in so großer Ausführlichkeit geschildert, dass es für mich irgendwann etwas zäh wurde. Wenn zB sehr viele Namen von den vielen Menschen genannt werden, die Cristoforetti getroffen hat, die ich aber alle nicht kenne. Auch die vielen Trainings und Tests werden sehr ausführlich beschrieben. Das gewährt zwar interessante Einblicke, aber man sollte sich schon wirklich sehr für die Raumfahrt interessieren, damit dieses Buch was für einen ist. Allerdings habe ich so auch viel Neues über die Raumfahrt gelernt. Zum Beispiel, dass die Aufgaben eines Astronauten, neben dem Flug vor allem Öffentlichkeitsarbeit bestehen. Und der eigentliche Aufenthalt im All nimmt ja im Verhältnis zur Beschäftigung bei NASA oder ESA nur eine geringe Zeit in Anspruch.
Viel Zeit nimmt natürlich auch erstmal die Ausbildung in Anspruch. Die Schilderungen von Cristoforetti haben mir wirklich vor Augen geführt, welche unglaubliche Leistung Astronauten vollbringen. Nicht nur während des Aufenthalts auf der ISS, sondern auch schon im Training. Ich habe von diesen enormen Anforderungen gelesen, sowohl körperlich als auch psychisch, und kann mir kaum vorstellen, wie man das schaffen kann. Es setzt wirklich ein großes Maß an Leistungsbereitschaft voraus und ich denke, man muss auch einige Opfer bringen.
Das es sich für Samantha Cristoforetti lohnt, merkt man aber auf jeder Seite, denn sie erzählt mit so viel Begeisterung und Stolz von ihren Erlebnissen und Leistungen. Für sie war es ein langer, schwieriger Weg, voller Anstrengungen, Erfolgserlebnisse, aber auch Rückschlägen, an dem sie uns intensiv teilhaben lässt.
Cristoforetti thematisiert auch die Stellung der Frau in der Raumfahrt und auch die mögliche Diskriminierung. Samantha selbst hat keine negativen Erfahrungen gemacht, berichtet aber reflektiert von den Möglichkeiten. Diese Aspekte fand ich auch sehr spannend.
Mein absolutes Highlight waren aber dann die ca. 100 Seiten, in denen Cristoforetti von ihrem Aufenthalt auf der ISS erzählt. Von der Arbeit dort, der Forschung, aber auch vom Alltag in der Schwerelosigkeit. Sie schreibt von den tollen Erlebnisse, aber auch von den Gefahren eines Lebens im Weltraum. Darüber hätte ich gern noch viel, viel mehr gelesen.

Das Buch lässt mich etwas zwiegespalten zurück. Das Thema ist unglaublich spannend, allerdings schildert die Autorin das Auswahlverfahren und viele technische Details wirklich sehr ausgiebig und detailliert, so das für mich auch einige Längen entstanden sind. Die Beschreibung ihrer Zeit auf der ISS ist aber so interessant, dass ich die Seiten verschlungen habe. Das hat mich für alle Kritikpunkte entschädigt.

Uno di quei libri estremamente sottovalutati dalla platea dei lettori.
La storia si dipana da quando Cristoforetti si candida per diventare astronauta al ritorno sulla Terra dopo la missione Futura, si alternano parti autobiografiche con altre più tecniche ma rese in maniera assolutamente comprensibile a tutti.
L'ho trovato insieme emozionante e istruttivo. Mi aspettavo uno stile più giornalistico, invece Cristoforetti rivela una vena poetica che mi ha piacevolmente sorpreso.
Questo libro è scritto maledettamente bene, non ha nulla da invidiare a libri scritti da chi "è del mestiere" e troviamo anche diverse illustrazioni che ci aiutano a immaginare i vari strumenti con cui ha dovuto confrontarsi.

Premesso che adoro ogni cosa che abbia a che fare con lo spazio e che come Astrosamantha sono anch'io un trekkiano fanatico.
Lei è pilota (capitano) dell'Aeronautica Militare italiana. Con tutto il rispetto, il suo "animo" militare si vede anche nella sua prosa, asettica coma una comunicazione via radio.
In tutte le parti in cui le informazioni che trasmette sono state per me una novità, di questa sua prosa da laboratorio o da cockpit non me ne sono neanche accorto, devo essere sincero.
Ma tutte le volte in cui mi arrivavano informazioni già note (non così raramente) o lei si lasciava andare ad un po' di fantasia (di cui, da brava milite, sembra parecchio carente) la noia colpiva con l'impeto di un atterraggio in Kazakistan...
Tutto il ricavato lo devolve all'Unicef, e questo non si può non dire.
Ma in taaanti punti ho fatto davvero fatica. Era la mia "samanthepam"... ;)

Un'opera scritta in maniera impeccabile, chiara e precisa, da una mano che di romanzi ne ha sfogliati in quantità, e che non lascia veramente nulla a se stesso. Al di là della possibilità di considerare questo libro come un prezioso e valido materiale di divulgazione scientifica, resa accessibile a chiunque abbia anche solo un po' di voglia di farsi prendere con mano alla scoperta di tutto ciò che come umanità facciamo in quel minuscolo satellite riconducibile ad una lattina orbitante a 400km di altitudine da terra, è nell'essenza un mezzo per concedere a noi stessi un meravigliarsi lungo 500 pagine alla scoperta della tecnica, della natura e dell'uomo che supera di fatto i propri limiti terrestri in virtù della propria inarrestabile curiosità. AstroSam, grazie!

You know your girl is an astronaut wannabe. I have been thwarted by height which is a limitation to travel as an official astronaut. But now with Virgin Galactic, Blue Origin and SpaceX expanding the ability for average folks to get to space, my hopes have been raised again!
Samantha Cristoforetti gives us the story of the immense hardwork it takes to be prepared for a space mission, the unbearable waiting and fierce competition to be selected. I've read a lot of astronaut biographies, as you can see, but this one has such immersive detail. I have often said I'm not sure if height hadn't excluded me if I could have had the discipline required to pass muster, and Samantha's journey is impressive. I am sure that I would not have had a chance to be selected next to candidates as robust as she.
Half of the book outlines the many year journey of intense training at various space centers around the world, learning mechanical parts, Russian language and culture, team building and endless what-if simulations. After that, Samantha finally reaches the Space Station. The amount of details provided is over and above what I have read in any other astronaut's memoirs and it's really empowering to hear how a woman dealt with these challenges and became a leader in the field.

Picked this book up expecting it to be the much anticipated sequel to the classic, Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Diario di un'apprendista astronauta si è rivelato una lettura laboriosa ma ricca di soddisfazioni; tante curiosità e un resoconto dettagliato e appassionante del lungo viaggio che ha portato Samantha Cristoforetti dal cockpit di un aereo alla Stazione Spaziale Internazionale, raccontato con mano leggera e ironica. Al di là degli ovvi meriti della Samatha professionista (diventare astronauta non è certo una cosa da tutti) quello che traspare è il punto di vista una persona gradevole e simpatica alle prese con una sfida di certo non comune. Assolutamente consigliato agli amanti dello spazio.

In this Book Samantha Christoforetti - an ESA Astronaut - describes her journey from applying as an astronaut to her first (and so far her only) tour to the International Space Station and back.
She goes into great detail about how the selection process works and the rigorous training she and her fellow colleagues had to get through. This sometimes felt a bit long-winded, however it still provided interesting insights.
The account of her stay on the ISS itself is quite short compared to the rest of the book, but I really enjoyed her portrayal of it. The emotions of being one of the select few to have visited this outpost of humanity in space and being part of the important science being done in the microgravity environment.
All in all I enjoyed the book as an interesting read and having only just begun developing a deeper interest in space travel and the science behind it, I could take a lot of learnings from it.

Samantha Cristoforetti has written one of the best astronaut autobiographies. It is an impressive and often moving look at an astronaut's training and flight experiences for a mission to the International Space Station.

Un regalo di Amazon. Era nella mia wishlist e forse non l'avrei mai comprato, come molti altri libri in lista..
Un libro interessante, a tratti un po' troppo tecnico, ma di facile lettura (o forse l'ho trovato facile io, viste le mie conoscenze nel campo ingegneristico..)
Buona parte è dedicata alla preparazione prima della missione: ogni astronauta passa mesi a prepararsi a risolvere qualsiasi tipo di problema potrebbe capitare, anche se poi magari va tutto liscio!
Poco spazio è dedicato alla vita in orbita, ma probabilmente dettagli a riguardo sono già stati raccontati e possono essere trovati sul suo blog.
Davvero molto lungo e pensavo quasi di non finirlo mai, ma ce l'ho fatta! Ne valeva la pena.

Bellissimo, personale come un vero e proprio diario ma con quel tanto che basta per imparare anche qualcosa in più sullo spazio e sulle missioni spaziali. Ammiro moltissimo Samantha Cristoforetti e spero di rivederla presto lassù sulla ISS!

Un racconto fresco e senza fronzoli che ripercorre in prima persona sei anni (cinque di preparazione e l’anno della missione) di vita dell’autrice, dopo i quali è diventata per tutti AstroSamantha. Sei anni di duro lavoro, fisico e mentale, per arrivare al livello di efficienza necessario per svolgere con successo una missione nello spazio, senza per questo perdere la voglia di giocare e di assaporare l’esperienza unica che ha potuto vivere. Le oltre cinquecento pagine trasmettono tutto questo ed altro ancora, riuscendo ad essere al tempo stesso un ottimo libro di divulgazione scientifica e una conferenza “motivazionale”, spingendo noi lettori a puntare sempre - pur nella nostra quotidianità - alle stelle.

Al di là di ripercorrere tutte le fasi di una missione importante e difficile, che inizia anni prima e si conclude al suo rientro sulla terra, Sam ci racconta come QUELLA missione è sempre stata la SUA missione. Un obiettivo inseguito fin da giovane, un traguardo ricco di emozioni e gratitudine per tutto ciò che lo ha reso possibile. Gli aspetti tecnici si amalgamano ai sentimenti, alle paure (di non essere all'altezza, dell'imprevisto che potrebbe far saltare tutta la missione) e alla caparbietà di chi vive ogni giorno per dare il massimo nel lavoro che ama.

I was thrilled to get my hands on this ARC; I've been wanting to read more about Italian astronaut Cristoforetti ever since "meeting" her in Terry Virts's book How to Astronaut. From the author's note at the start to the very last page, Cristoforetti comes across as likable, relatable, and extremely smart and capable. She details the years of training leading up to her 2014-15 mission on the International Space Station, and although I was chomping at the bit to get to the actual space part of the memoir (halfway through), I imagine that my feelings mirrored her own impatience to get there, despite the training being fascinating, important, and necessary. Cristoforetti writes well, shifting seamlessly from entertaining anecdotes about training to poetic musings about the beauty of Earth as seen from space. I was delighted to learn she will be taking command of ISS Expedition 68 in 2022, and will follow her career with interest. My heartfelt thanks to The Experiment Publishing, Samantha Cristoforetti, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Ein grandioses, informatives und facettenreiches Buch. Man erfährt viel von einer gebildeten, talentierten, bewundernswerten und doch bescheidenen Frau. Und obwohl Cristoforettis Traum nicht derer vieler ist, so ist es doch für jedermann inspirierend. Es zeigt, dass sich Träume erfüllen können, wenn man bereit ist, hart für seine Träume zu arbeiten und ein kleines Quäntchen Glück hat.
Die lange Reise beginnt nicht mit dem Start ins All, sondern es beginnt sehr viel früher. So habe ich mir das Buch vorgestellt, bzw. habe ich es mir so gewünscht. Von daher habe ich jede Seite genossen und fand es unheimlich spannend, ihren Werdegang zu verfolgen. Natürlich ist vieles technischer Natur, dennoch simpel erklärt, ohne groß ins Detail zu gehen. Von daher ist es auch ein Buch für LeserInnen, die sich z. B. nicht für Ingenieurwissenschaften interessieren.
Das Buch wurde sinnvoll aufgebaut und ich finde, dass die Autorin reflektiert und ehrlich schreibt. Es wurde weder langweilig noch stupide.
Eine klare Leseempfehlung!

Il primo Space Shuttle è del 1981, la mia è quindi generazione per la quale la presenza di esseri umani nello spazio appare forse scontata. Ci voleva questo bel libro di "astrosamantha" per ricordarci quanto ancora oggi questa sia una delle frontiere della scienza e della tecnica, oltre a uno straordinario report sulla lunghissima preparazione che ogni astronauta deve affrontare prima del "lancio". Da adesso poi impossibile non guardare il cielo e pensare per un attimo anche alla Stazione Spaziale Internazionale e ai suoi ospiti.

Comprato appena uscito e divorato, mi piacciono molto il suo stile narrativo, il suo modo di spiegare in termini semplici concetti legati al mondo degli astronauti, la sua ironia e il suo lato nerd. Questo libro è stato capace di trasmettermi tantissime emozioni e di tenermi incollata fino all'ultima pagina, seguendo il percorso della Cristoforetti nel suo addestramento e la sua vita a bordo della stazione spaziale Internazionale. Non sono brava a scrivere recensioni, ma lo consiglio 😊

There’s lots of interesting detail but I feel we never learn much about the author. Although she pays tribute to her editor there are so many times when I think, why?, how?, or tell me more! But the text has moved on. Sometimes a lot of adjectives tell very little about what is happening. But the author is also still waiting for another mission and so may not have been at full liberty to speak her mind.

I really enjoyed reading this book, especially because it gives such useful insight on what the journey to becoming an astronaut is like and what life on the ISS is like.
Plus the book was written by the first italian woman to ever take part in a space expedition, so that made reading it even more meaningful to me.

È un libro con cui è possibile scoprire tante cose sulla preparazione e sulla vita di un astronauta, dalla selezione, agli anni di esercitazione , al volo etc. È inoltre un libro che ispira tanta curiosità e piacere

Samantha accompagna il lettore personalmente, in modo affettuoso, coinvolgente, dalla terra alle stelle o quasi, nell'avamposto più lontano che ad oggi, l'umanità può vantare.
