Ahogy az Európai Unió felbomlása után az országok városállamokra estek szét, úgy a tizenhárom éves Vik családja is kettészakadt. Apja a háborús légkörben egy másik városállamhoz készül átállni, anyja titkos ügynök barátja, Rod pedig most a barátnőjét, Ajlát próbálja behálózni. Vik sodródik az eseményekkel, úgy érzi, mindenki a feje fölött dönt, ráadásul - hiába fogadta föltétlen bizalmába - most mintha a rejtélyes Gömb is magára hagyta volna. A Fekete fény második részében, Vik különleges külső és belső utazása során feltárulnak a családi múlt titkai, új megvilágításba kerülnek a jelen eseményei, és olyasmi derül ki a Gömbről, amire Vikhez hasonlóan talán az olvasó sem számít.
A Városból a titokzatos Gömb segítségével elmenekült Vik a szomszédos városállam, Protográd, vagy ahogy ők nevezik: „Szegény Szomszéd” felé veszi az irányt apjával és hajdani gombászkolóniájuk néhány megmaradt tagjával abban a reményben, hogy Vik eltűnt nagybátyja, Bátyó nyomára bukkannak.

Először is azzal kezdeném, hogy ez egy tipikus „nem veled van a gond, én vagyok a hibás” helyzet. Egyrészt a kedvencem, a világépítés itt már nem sokat lépett előre. Mivel az alapfelállást már ismerjük az első kötetből, Szegény Szomszéd, azaz Protograd milyensége már nem sok újat hoz ehhez a részhez. Mert igen, ahogy minden jóravaló disztópia következő kötetben, a megismert világunk tovább nyílik. De mivel a világépítés már nem annyira fajsúlyos rész, sokkal több hely marad az akciónak, ami viszont engem kevésbé köt le.

Amit nagyon szerettem, hogy megismertük Vik szüleinek a történetét (ahogy megismerkedtek a tüntetésen, ahol végre kénytelen voltak nem a közösségi hálózaton lógni, hanem tényleg hús-vér embertársukra figyelni). A politikai helyzet is érdekes volt, illetve hogy ez mennyire szólt bele protagonistánk és szeretteinek/ismerőseinek életébe, bár a végére már a nagykutyákkal kellene megküzdeni.

Kevésbé szippantott be Vik és Ajla történetének folytatása. Valahogy kevéssé tudtam elhinni, ahogy a 13 éves kissrác fogja magát, és a barátnőjével együtt elhajt a szülők elől az übermenő dzsipben… Kicsit hosszúra nyúlt Vik gömbkeresése is (és bár ebben nagyon alacsony az ingerküszöböm, nekem egy kicsit túl naturalista is volt). És ami kis szemforgatást is okozott, az az utolsó pár oldal volt. Egyrészt igazam lett, nem igazán tudtuk meg, hogy mi is a Gömb, másik részről az Örök Most és társai leírása, mint a halál utáni dolgok leírása a legtöbbször, merő giccsbe csap át szerintem. Őszintén szólva annyira nem tetszett, hogy most bele kellett olvasnom, hogy egyáltalán mi volt a vége, pedig nagyjából 1 hónapja olvastam.

Ez nem jelenti azt, hogy egyáltalán nem élveztem, de azt nem tudnám mondani, hogy beváltotta a hozzá fűzött reményeimet. Azonak, akik jobban el tudnak merülni az akciósabb jelenetekben, és ez nagyjából elég is nekik egy könyvben, biztos jobban fog tetszeni.

Second book of a Hungarian near-future dystopian-ish YA duology; see also my review of the first volume, which I really enjoyed.

I'll try to say it without spoilers, because I do believe people might want to know this going in: the book takes a weird turn at the end so that the plot can be shoehorned into a Christian allegory.

I was worried something like this was coming, and well, there it was. I found it offputting to say the least, and nowhere near as compelling as other possible plots could have been, based on the first book.

A lot of the book also involved the characters just running around; I got the impression the author ran out of things for them to do. There was also very little of the Sphere, and the Sphere stole the show in the first book, so its absence was really felt. I'm sure that was deliberate, but it was annoying to read.

More spoilery discussion, including of the books' theology: It turns out people pass the mysterious flying Sphere on by sacrificing their lives for a person who then gets the Sphere, and this is considered praiseworthy. I think this all turns on accepting at least the basics of Christian theology, even though the book doesn't introduce them or establish them in some other way, so the twist comes across as odd. In Judaism - just to bring another example -, your life is just as valuable as the other person's, so it doesn't work quite like this.

The discussion of people passing the Sphere onto each other in a chain by sacrificing their lives was honestly chilling for me rather than uplifting. Especially since the protagonist did NOT know that it worked like this before he died, so the entire aspect of consent was missing for me. It is at least clear that Jesus *knew* what he was getting into.

The depiction of afterlife was also kind of eh for me. Look, the protagonist dies, but it's ok because he goes to heaven! I read the book weeks ago and I'm still frustrated it ended this way.

I also felt that the plot around Chinese influence was kind of eh; and I still don't understand if they really had androids, or if that was a bluff and the androids were just regular people. It wasn't set up in any way earlier. Androids are really a lot more complex than any of the technology that was shown beforehand.

As I very much enjoyed the first book, I honestly couldn't wait to start the second one. Truth to be told, I simply had to take a break in the middle despite the very appealing synopsis: I simply couldn't get into it like I did with "A Gömb".

I enjoyed the story, but some things put me off : spoiler>1) I felt the characters are spending way too much time running around without knowing what they're doing or why 2) the journey of Vik to "the refuge"... I understand the author wants us to feel almost minute by minute how desperate Vik is to find the sphere, but this was waaaay too long... 3) what really killed me was the epilogue, and especially the letter to the dad to the mom. It truly felt like those were 2 people who just met each other... "Sorry I couldn't talk to you at our son's burial, but please, if you have time, come and see us, there'll be a bed for you...". Felt like very hastily written.

Here are a few notes :

- There are very interesting sci-fi elements coming on top of what the first book brought: the vertical farms, the past of Vik's dad (eugenic companies programming babies, 3D printing limbs, the androids, the influence of China,...)

- I love how the current generation is described : "we had the biggest puzzle any generation ever had at its disposal, and we were playing with the colored pieces without even trying to assemble the picture". That really resonated in me: the inability to synthesize this wealth of information we have at our fingertips.

- enjoyed exploiting the small clues left as to where the action is taking place in Europe. Protogradis said to probably have been a mining city, explaining why its inhabitants have such bad taste (lol btw) : pointing to Nagybánya? Is the "Eastern Harbor" Odessa, or Constanta?

- twist ending : I really didn't see this coming :) Even though I have some doubts about the ethic part of Vik's decision... Would he have taken the same decision if he knew this meant he had to die?.

Az elején egy élvezhető könyvnek bizonyult, viszont valahol a vége felé megállt a tudomány. 1 évbe telt kiolvasni ezt a könyvet, nem azért mert rossz volt, hanem azért mert egyszerűen nem vonzott. A vége egy kicsit hanyagnak érződött és úgy érzem ebben a könyvben több potenciál rejlett
