A Deadly Inside Scoop is the first book to An Ice Cream Parlor Mystery and it's off to a great start. It's light, warm and entertaining read that has scoops of flavours with all those elements in a cozy mystery.

Bronwyn "Win" has taken over the family ice cream shop, and she is off to a rocky start with the weather and then finding a body in the snow. It starts to look like her father is a suspect. Win and her friend Maisie team up and do some amateur sleuthing to find out who killed Stephen Bay

Bronwyn (Win) is taking over her family’s ice cream shop, and with that, she has some renovations to do. Sadly, her changes delay the shop’s opening until a snow day, the first of the season, so it’s not as grand as she imagined. On top of that, Win finds a body in the snow, of someone who had a dispute with her family. Win’s father is named as a suspect in the crime. And now Win feels charged with solving the crime and clearing her dad’s name.

A Deadly Inside Scoop is an intriguing mystery. It w

The important thing to note here is that A Deadly Inside Scoop is the first cozy mystery I’ve ever read, though it’s been a genre I’ve wanted to get into since roughly 2015. So. I am not at all familiar with the tropes and conventions of cozies, so this is an outsider viewpoint.

Collette’s set-up here is cute. Win Crewse is back in Ohio after a stint in New York and ready to re-open her grandparents’ ice cream parlor—except she stumbles over a dead body the very day of the grand reopening. Not to

I won an ARC copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway. I wanted to like this cozy mystery, but the simple writing was repetitive and the story dragged on. The back and forth dialogue was mostly meaningless, and the characters were very flat and boring. I’m not sure if this one felt so dry because it’s slated to be the first in a series and so most of this was setup for that (introducing characters, explaining backstory, etc). I might possibly try the second one before completely writing it off.

Old school ice cream shop complete with a soda fountain owned and operated by a black woman? I'm not even the biggest ice cream fan but I couldn't wait to salivate over her concoctions! Caramel popcorn, ghoulish blueberry, pumpkin roll, decadent chocolate... Yum!

This was a well written, diverse mystery with a likable cast of characters worth checking out. The mystery does take it's time to start but the story keeps you entertained throughout.

A new favorite cozy mystery series for me—Abby Collette’s Ice Cream Parlor Mysteries have it all! The characters are fantastic, I love the ice cream shop theme and seeing how she grows her business, and the mystery was well-done and compelling. Loved it!

A Deadly Inside Scoop is the first in a new cozy mystery series featuring the Crewse family, one of the only Black families in Chagrin Falls, Ohio and owners of a family ice cream parlor business started by the late and great Grandma Kay. I compl

First of all, it is never too cold for ice cream, in Ohio or Wisconsin or anywhere!!

Crewse Creamery is a family business and recent MBA grad Bronwyn “Win” Crewse has been handed the reins to bring the ice cream shop back to its glory days using her grandmother’s recipes while adding a few of her own. Unfortunately, her opening day was pushed past the summer months and the day she actually opens the snow is flying. So Win decides to embrace it by using her grandmother’s recipe

Brownwyn “Win” Crewse has done everything to make her family’s ice cream shop a success, starting with a completely renovated space and a new menu courtesy of her grandmother’s favorite recipes. Unfortunately, after unexpected delays extend past the bustling summer season, she’s forced to reopen during an early snow. And while she knows ice cream is the perfect treat no matter the weather, potential customers don’t have the same mindset. Things only go from bad to worse when she discovers a dead ...more

I was super excited when I heard about this book deal. Culinary cozies are a favorite of mine, and I've never read an ice cream shop cozy - something I didn't know I needed in my life! Abby Collette's A Deadly Inside Scoop does not disappoint.

There was so much I enjoyed about this well-written mystery: the likable, relatable main character, Bronwyn, her big supportive family, the ice cream - did I mention the ice cream? There's a lot of it: people eating it, people making it... I enjoyed all of

Y’all see how long it took me to read this book!!! It has never taken me this long to read a book! Like wow! Every time I picked it up I would fall asleep. But I pushed through so that we could do the review for our podcast. But hunnay!

So first I was excited to read a mystery novel written by a black woman featuring a black lead. I also loved the fact that the center of activity was based around a black owned family business. Like who would not love to see that!!?? I am here for the close knit

Bronwyn “Win” Crewse is ready to reopen Crewse Creamery, the ice cream parlor founded by her grandparents in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, after some renovations. Unfortunately, opening day sees an early October snow storm and no customers. However, Win’s day gets even worse when she stumbles upon a dead body after she’s closed the shop for the day. The man turns out to be someone who crossed paths with Win’s family years ago, and not for the better. Before Win knows it, the police are looking at her fat ...more

This was really… not great. And I’m sad! I was really hoping for a nice modern cozy mystery. Unfortunately the writing style was incredibly simplistic and repetitive, to the point where I feel like half of the book was just people repeating the same things over and over again. Almost nothing happened for over half of the book and then all of a sudden there were random suspects all over the place and a rush to figure out what happened, and not in an exciting conclusion kind of way. I knew I shoul ...more

This was adorable.
A sweet small town full of characters, small businesses, friendly neighbors and a wholesome family make for reasonably interesting murder mystery.
Like most cozy mystery stories the focus of the book seems to be the players more than the clues.
This was a bit slow in places but extremely charming.

My taste in mystery/thrillers rarely encompasses the "cozy" kind - mostly because the "heroine" typically is a woman who has no common sense and charges ahead to put her own life, and sometimes the lives of others, at risk simply because she won't listen to anyone else. This one spoke to me, though, because it's set in Chagrin Falls, Ohio - almost, but not quite, in my own back yard - I've been there many times.

And then I found out the heroine - in this case, ice cream shop owner Bronwyn Crewse

This was an awesome first for this new series, and I really love these characters! I think my faves were Maisie and PopPop. It was hilarious to read about Win and Maisie sleuthing together with sensible, non-risk taking Win trying her best to keep Maisie out of trouble. When their other bestie Riya joined in and beat up a guy, sleuthing was just taken to a new level with them. PopPop made a good ice cream shop helper, since he'd founded the place to begin with, but he was also a pretty good snoo ...more
I totally didn't need to begin yet another cozy mystery but I couldn't resist this when I ran across it. The sluether is the owner of an ice cream shop and the cover was neat. Happily, so was the story. Bronwyn Crewse has an already busy and challenging day on the re-launch of the ice cream shop that's been in her family for years. It's winter and her renovations aren't quite complete. On the upside, she is now in possession of her grandmother's handwritten recipes (thanks Granddad) and is in th ...more
A Deadly Inside Scoop by Abby Collette is SO MUCH FUN, and I had such a great time reading it. I'm a big fan of the cozy mystery genre and this made for a great start to the Ice Cream Parlor series. It is lighthearted, entertaining, and pleasantly surprising, especially since I did not have the culprit figured out. Bronwyn (Win) was such a great character as was her friend Maisie. I loved watching them blunder through their investigation of who killed the man Win found dead, and there were lots ...more

A Deadly Inside Scoop has all of the elements of a good cozy mystery: small town, quirky friends and/or family members and just a smidge of crime.

Abby Vandiver, writing as Abby Collette, is no stranger to lovers of mystery, but new fans will appreciate the introduction of Bronwyn Crewse, her friends and parents, her touching relationship with her grandfather and her passionate quest to kickstart the reopening of her grandparents' historic ice cream parlor. I always love starting a new cozy mystery series, particularly if it’s by an author I haven’t read yet. A Deadly Inside Scoop is one of the better series debuts I’ve read recently, and I’m so delighted to have discovered a new-to-me author that I’ll definitely keep following!

Bronwyn “Win” Crewse has a lot at stake as the book begins. She’s putting the final touches on restoring her family’s ice cream parlor (re-opening in the middle of a blizzard) and preparing to follow her beloved late grandmo

How can a new cozy series that features ice cream be bad?  It can't!  In fact, it is downright delicious and the recipes at the end will have you pulling out an ice cream maker to make some for your own home.

Bronwyn Crewse, AKA Win, is our protagonist and amateur sleuth.  She has recently returned to Chagrin Falls from NY and is reopening her grandparent's ice cream shop.  This shop has a history in that town and many have fond memories of her grandparents and the ice cream.  The relationship wi

One of my friends' sister moved to the small town of Chagrin Falls, Ohio. So when I saw that this book takes place there, I was excited to check it out. Unfortunately, the characters fell flat and I wasn't a fan. I never really got into the story to the point where I wanted to know more of what was going on. I did finish it because I'm joining an online book discussion for it. Otherwise, I probably would've put it down halfway through.

I really wanted to like this book, but it just never connected. The author has all the components of a cozy mystery (murder set in a village) and tried valiantly to improve upon the genre by centering Black characters. But the book lacks soul. None of the characters are charming, compelling, or even interesting. The author is clearly trying but it feels overly formulaic.

You would think that a book with a cover as cute as this one would be charming. Sorry to say you’re completely wrong.

It’s boring, the characters are flat and the development of the mystery is very childlike.

But at least this is the cutest cover ever to a cozy mystery.
