Beautiful illustrations and a coming-of-age story that aptly elicits the fears of growing up band together can be found in Megan Wagner Lloyd and Michelle Mee Nutter’s graphic novel, Allergic. We follow Maggie, a young girl who wants nothing more than a dog for a pet, only to learn – on her birthday, no less – that she’s highly allergic to dog hair…and pretty much every other type of fur. Understandingly crushed, she is still determi

Maggie has always wanted a dog. Her younger brothers Liam and Noah have each other, and her parents are expecting another baby, so she wants something that is just hers. The family goes to an animal shelter to adopt, and even finds a dog that is just perfect, but Maggie has such a bad allergic reaction that she breaks out in hives and her eyes close shut. She visits the doctor, and has to go for allergy testing, but the dog adoption is put on hold. Maggie ends up

Thanks to Scholastic for the uncorrected proof copy of Allergic: A Graphic Novel for review consideration. This did not influence my thoughts or opinions.

Allergic was a fantastic story that will truly resonate with 5th and 6th graders. All of the situations and emotions portrayed evoke what it is truly like to want something so badly it hurts. I believe this is going to be a hit with its intended middle-grade audience.

I can only imagine what Maggie is going through. To be the oldes

This graphic novel was adorable. Since we recently got a poodle because my husband is allergic to dogs, I could relate to the idea of an allergy making someone/an entire family sad/miserable. Loved the sibling and neighbor relationships as well. Highly recommend to MG readers.
