So Over the Holidays #1

Stocking Stuffers

Rate this book
Sasha Holiday is so over the holidays after getting left at the altar last Christmas Eve. But as the marketing maven for Lady Robin’s Intimate Implements, she’s stuck not-so-merrily pitching naughty toys at a romance book club’s Christmas party. Her loathing of the yuletide only intensifies as a snowstorm rolls in and traps her at the Winterberry Inn. Stranded with her is Perry Winters—a hot bearded book club member trimmed in flannel and tattoos.

Perry’s a romantic with an unerring belief in the magic of the season, and he recognizes a Christmas miracle when he sees it. Brave, smart, and confident—Sasha Holiday is a gift. And the gifts keep coming when she suggests they pass the time with some no-strings fun. After all, she has a big bag of toys that would make even Santa want to stay in bed on Christmas Eve.

But the frisky festivities turn complicated as feelings spark between Sasha and Perry. Perry wants to see Sasha once the snow clears, but Sasha is reluctant to take the relationship sleigh ride again. Perry will have to show her that love is more than just a holiday feeling.

I really wanted to love this book because it's unlike any book I've read before, but as a romance, it just didn't work for me.

If I was viewing this book as erotica and not for the romantic connection between the two main character, I'd like the story a bit more. The female MC sells sex-toys, and she is a empowered, unabashedly sexual being. She owns being bisexual and isn't remotely ashamed of it (good for her!), and discusses sex in an extremely inclusive manner. I don't think I've ever read a book before where they don't say "man" or "woman" but "people with vaginas" or "people with penises" as to be inclusive of those on the trans or non-binary spectrum. It was refreshing, and I applaud the author for creating such a sex-positive, non-judgmental group of characters. To boot, many of the side characters were also queer, so that added to the overall vibe of the story.

However, though the story had lovely components, as a romance... I wasn't feeling it.

It took me ten (TEN) days to read this novella, which was only about 150 pages. The romance felt like an afterthought, and I couldn't picture these two together. I think part of my issue was that novellas are a difficult format, and so much of the story was focused on their erotic journey that I didn't get much of that slow-burn that I crave. It felt rushed, and the female MC felt checked out for most of the book.

I wanted to light up more stars for this story, but the slower pace and the lack of romance made me feel blah-ish about the book. However, I'm looking forward to more diverse pairings and interesting stories from Erin McLellan in the future.

4th read - 2024: Yup, this still rocks.

3rd read - 2022: Man, I just love this steamy little Christmas novella so much. It is full of spice, heart, silliness, sex toys, chemistry, compelling characters, and a lot of Christmas atmosphere.

2nd read - 2020: A+ Christmas smut. I think this novella strikes the perfect balance between being steamy, romantic, and funny. Rereading it in 2020 I definitely have to bump up my rating to 5 stars from the 4.5 I gave it last year.

1st read - 2019: 4.5 - A super smutty, super funny Christmas novella. Sasha markets sex toys for a living and ends up snowed in at a bed & breakfast with a stash of her merchandise. She hates Christmas and doesn’t want to get into a relationship, but is drawn to Perry, a romantic man who loves everything about the holiday season. While snowed in together they decide to make their way through Sasha’s bag of toys.

This was just such an incredibly quick and fun read. I was laughing out loud at some parts. I also appreciated that this story is more queer than one might imagine just based on the synopsis. Sasha is bisexual and at least 5 of the supporting characters are queer as well.

I really don’t have anything negative to say about this other than I wish it was longer because I loved the characters and their dynamic so much. I’m definitely going to be reading more from this author.

I crashed out of this before I'd made it a fifth through. By that point, Sasha had dropped things four times (because Perry is, apparently, the biggest jump-scare of all time) and was too stupid to stay in out of the blizzard and actually tried three times to get her car over a hill before giving up. Seriously, at that point, Perry helping her potentially kill herself ("I'll go get cat litter to see if it helps you up the icy bit") stops being cute and edges into sketchy territory. It doesn't help that she's got a transparently negative motivation* and a hyper-predatory sexuality and I'm just not seeing an up-side here.

* Negative Motivations: I kind of hate that the term "negative motivation" isn't widespread, yet. Since it isn't, I'm going to save off this little jag to append to my reviews that feature the term. Jennifer Crusie blogged about it a bit back (or, if that link doesn't work, here's a cache of the original) and it changed how I understand story. The problem with the term is that if you've never heard it before, you'd assume it meant motivations that are harmful or immoral. Not so. What it refers to is motivations not to do something. The thing is that many of us are motivated to not do things for a lot of different, perfectly valid and reasonable, reasons. The problem is that in a story motivations to not do things are a huge drag on the plot—particularly considering the fact that most negative motivations are overcome by the character simply deciding they don't care any more (or, rather, that they do care and are now motivated to do the thing). So not only do you have a counter to action but you also have a situation where to overcome it, all a character has to do is change their mind. Which means eventually, the reader is rooting for the character to get over him/herself already and do the thing we want them to do. Conflict drives story. Conflict between a reader and a main character drives readers away from story.

- m/f
- bi heroine who hates xmas and is snowbound in an inn that takes xmas to the next level.
- She's stuck because she was selling sex toys (she works in marketing for a sex toys company) to a romance novel book club.
- In walks the innkeeper's bearded/flannel-wearing brother

Anyway, if the blurb sounds up your alley, you're probably going to love it. Sexy as hell (a lot of sex toys in action). I loved the meddling family/friends. So many queer secondary chars. It made my heart happy.

A super sweet hero:
Never mind. I’m putting on my accounting slacks.Who is starting over and blushes all the time but is very very dirty + a sex toy bisexual heroine made for a good Xmas erotic romance.

The conflict was tired, really tired, but the cast and sex positivity pulled this one up.

And they get snowed in. And I am obsessed with snowed in. I'll continue with the series as little palate cleansers. Thanks to Aarya for her positive review of the fourth getting me started

Okay, so here’s the thing, this little novella walks a thin line between erotica and erotic romance. The HEA/HFN between Sasha & Perry is a bit hard for me to connect with because there wasn't development of it, but I enjoyed the heck out of them anyways LOL

With just a few more chapters, this could easily have been a really sexy romance journey but that's not how the author wanted to write it so *shrug*

I think the cover does a good job of making sure there is NO confusion about what kind of holiday romance novella this one is! I love the author so much because while so much of this series (somehow I read 2 and 3 before coming back to 1) is focused on graphic bedroom scenes, the emotional relationship doesn’t get sacrificed. Probably the most inclusive and sex-positive books I have ever read.

Eeeekkkkk YES!!

This is definitely my favorite Christmas romance I have ever read!

The main character Sasha ends up getting stuck in a B&B for a couple of days, due to a really bad snowstorm. While she is there, she ends up meeting and becoming enthralled by the B&B owner's brother Perry. The attraction between the two of them is mutual, and they decide to have some fun together while they are stuck in this B&B. Oh, and this takes place during Christmas time! However, one of the people in this couple is a total Christmas grump!

This had one of the best grovel/take me back scenes everrrrr and I LOVED it! This was just a blast to read and Erin McLellan's writing is SO GOOD! 10/10 recommend if you want to read a great grumpy-sunshine, hot, Christmas read❤️

TROPES: book lovers (hero), Christmas books, cinnamon roll hero, damaged heroine, forced proximity, groveling, grumpy-sunshine, hero falls first, kindle unlimited, one night to more, sibling series, snowstorm, sweet hero

Re-read (December 2024):
I can't believe it's taken me so long to re-read this Christmas romance! I adore this whole series. Such a treat.

Original Review (October 30, 2019):
What a treat of a steamy Christmas romance! I’ve been meaning to read Erin McLellan for a couple of years and this was a wonderful introduction to her work.

Sasha is a bisexual sex toy saleswoman doing a demo for a romance book club shortly before her most hated holiday: Christmas. In walks Perry, a bearded, tattooed romance-reading wonder of a man. He headed home for the holidays a day early to beat the impending blizzard. The one that’s about to snow Sasha in for the next couple of days, to her eternal chagrin.

So, yes. We’ve got forced proximity and all kinds of fireworks going off between Sasha and Perry! I was here for it.

I loved both of these characters so much! Sasha is great at her job and her sex toy education was inclusive of gender and sexuality. Despite her hatred of Christmas, she does her best to get along with everyone at the inn and participate in the various activities. I’m not so sure I would have done the same. Perry is just a sweetheart and I endlessly swooned for him. He was so responsive to Sasha’s needs and he’s a great brother to Valerie, who runs the inn. He’s at a bit of an impasse in his life but he’s so drawn to Sasha that he goes for it anyway, even though he knows he’s not much for one-night stands and that’s all she has to offer.

This was super steamy with Sasha and Perry incorporating the unsold sex toys from her demo into their play. They clearly had chemistry but there was a deeper connection too, which understandably freaks Sasha out.

I didn’t completely get Sasha’s hatred for Christmas (misdirected anger much?). We’re briefly told her fiancé jilted her at their Christmas wedding. Absolutely this would be painful. But we don't know much more until toward the end of this story and that context would have gone a long way, had we been given it sooner.

The secondary characters are marvelous and I loved how queer-friendly the whole story is. Sasha and Perry’s relationship unfolded in such a delightful way. It had humor and heart and heat. What more do you need? This will be a great one to reread at Christmas.

Characters: Sasha is a white sex toy marketing manager. Perry is a white CPA and aspiring landscaper. This is set at the Winterberry Inn.

Content notes: recent unemployment, past wedding day jilting,
past biphobia, blizzard, past parental abandonment and divorce, past death of grandmother who raised FMC and her siblings, past death of MMC's father, FMC's sister is going through a divorce, past death of teen secondary character's mom, past death of secondary character's husband, p-in-v sex is the only real sex, on page sex, anal play, mutual masturbation, sex toys, nipple clamps, alcohol, inebriation (secondary character), ableist language

After reading a couple of slow burn novels, I needed a pick me up; aka something a little more filthy. My girl Alex came through on the recommendation this round.

Sasha is a saleswoman for Implement Intimates (seriously how much more clever naming can it get than this?) who is hosting a party for the Staunchly Raunchy Reads Book Club (again; the names are on point). Her job is selling sex toys and she's a master at her craft. The group in the book, and me, myself, in real life, got an education, for real. While the event is happening, it begins to blizzard outside and Sasha ends up stranded at Winterberry Inn much to her dismay cause it's all Christmas-y and she hates Christmas.

Enter Perry who is Valerie's brother. Valerie being the owner of Winterberry Inn and a member of the SSRBC. He shows up a day early and crashes the hosting event. Perry used to be a member of the SSRBC until he moved away so when he crashed the party, he didn't bat an eyelash except for when he laid eyes on Sasha. Then he was mighty interested in everything revolving around her.

Since Sasha is stranded and Perry is interested, what's a girl to do? Try out some of them toys with him of course!

Let me tell you something, this story checks all the marks. It's inclusive for all sexual identities, it describes the right way to consent to sexual endeavors, it's adventurous and detailed in the best ways when it comes to the steamy scenes and it is so god damn relatable. I adored the way Sasha and Perry navigated their relationship from beginning to end. It was truly fascinating to watch their different confidence levels in different interaction areas play out. I also LOVED the book club and Sasha's siblings who are the best ride or dies I've ever read in a story.

I could go on which is crazy cause this is a little novella but if you're looking for a great, quick Christmas romance read, this is it. This is the book.

I had heard really great things about STOCKING STUFFERS and from the very beginning it did not disappoint! I absolutely adored this sexy, fun, and inclusive romance and I can't wait for more stories in the series. While it follows the same pattern of a Christmas loving character and a grinch character being snowed in together, STOCKING STUFFERS has a very fresh and new feel. All the characters are a delight to read and it was great to see so many different types of people represented in a really genuine way.

Perry had me swooning from the moment he showed up and things only improved as we got to know this sweet, fun-loving, and romantic hero. He truly wears his heart on his sleeve and I just loved every second of him. He's self-aware, doesn't jump to conclusions, and is open to new experiences. Which is good because Sasha works for a sex toy company and she has a literal bag of tricks she's happy to introduce Perry to. Sasha was a great heroine and I loved her feisty personality and her dedication to her siblings. After a bad breakup she wants nothing to do with Christmas and while she knows there's something special about Perry she resists falling for him at all costs and this creates some more poignant moments in the second half of the book.

And of course, I have to point out how much I loved the sex positive nature of STOCKING STUFFERS because it's there on every page. Perry and Sasha agree to a little fun while they're snowed in and I loved the use and promotion of sex toys. We need more romance with sex toy use that shows them as a normal and fun piece of intimacy between partners. They're not just for BDSM books! I'm so excited for more in this series!

Wow, this went by pretty quickly for a holiday novella. Even though Christmas was like a weekend, or two, ago I'm not embarrassed to be devouring Stocking Stuffers within a few hours. Two days into the new year and I'm already happy with this first book.

In it, you will meet Sasha and Perry. From the moment they saw one another, sparks flew, and a certain chemistry was born. He was an open book, and she was a little grinch who despised Christmas. She had her reasons and he soon found ways to melt her frozen heart so that she could learn to love again. Whether it was someone else, him, or the holidays. Maybe a dash of both him and the holidays.

Their romance was a hit and very easy to fall in love with. I also think the ending was pretty cute, especially when her siblings came up with the Christmas scheme to begin with. Secretly hoping the next book will be about her brother or sister. Not that I wouldn't love a book about Perry's sister. Which I totally would... I just need all siblings to find love.

I LOVED this! So so steamy (I wish more romances would incorporate sex toys the way this one did) but with the right dose of sweetness and holiday atmosphere to balance it out. And Perry, my god *fans self* I’d like him gift-wrapped under my Christmas tree this year, please and thank you!

I love my Romances with lots of spice this story had TONS of spice with very little romance, but for me it worked. Sasha or as I like to refer to her Ms. Scrooge really dislikes Christmas, I mean she hates it so when she has to work a sex toy party right before the holiday she dreads it but she is willing to play up the stocking stuffers gimmick to gain a few extra sales but she can't seem to get the party ended quick enough.

Then in walks Perry, the hostesses brother, and there is an instant connection between the two of them. There is a snowstorm of epic proportions heading their way but hits sooner than expected and Sasha is now stranded at Winterbury Inn with Perry to keep her company and her bag of toys.... “It could be the twelve days of Christmas sex toys. A new gizmo every day.” And...this is where things get interesting. Perry is not the type of guy to have a one-night-stand but Sasha intrigues him and she is only interested in having fun so they break into her bag of tricks and the party really begins.

This is a hot, fun and sexy novella where the FMC sells sex toys but oops she gets snowed in at a cozy bed and breakfast. She meets the MMC & gives him a few lessons about toy usage. This one is steamy, memorable, sweet and lots of Holiday vibes. I loved it.
