I was excited to read this book as I'm interested in history, and I'm Episcopalian. However, while it has a lot of information, I have three main criticisms: 1) The negative tone makes is hard to enjoy. 2) There is virtually nothing in the book on San Francisco and the west coast. 3) There are several inaccuracies including the assertion that steel magnate, "Charles M. Schwab couldn't join the Yacht Club because he was Jewish". It is well documented that he was in fact, Roman Catholic, as were all four of his grandparents who immigrated from Germany.
A fascinating, thoroughly detailed social history of the Episcopal Church in the United States. A great supplement to E. Digby Baltzell’s The Protestant Establishment.
