The world behind The Dragon Prince is finally revealed!
The Dragon Prince has enchanted and enthralled viewers since its initial release in September of 2018. Now, for the first time ever, dive into the world behind its creation with this all-new hardcover collection! Never-before-seen concept sketches, preliminary designs, and first impressions from the first three seasons of the animated Netflix series expand over nearly 200 pages of content, from storyboards and environments to the characters and creatures that fans across the world have come to love.
Assembled in consultation with The Dragon Prince co-creators Aaron Ehasz and Justin Richmond and executive producer Justin Santistevan, this is the ultimate window into the work behind the show!
Obviously it's mostly art, but each character has a little description, and some things are explained a bit more in full (for example how they used sign language, individual primal source pages and creating the dark magic language)
Also, in true Dragon Prince fashion, there were a few sentences that made me laugh out loud (what can I say? We all love human Rayla!)
There are some absolutely stunning full page art pieces in here - I wish they included maybe one or two of them as a mini poster because I want to look at them forever (the double page spread of the map of the human kingdom / Xadia is so pretty, and the last three pages are breathtaking. One of Sol Regem, one of Zubeia Queen of the dragons and one of Avizandum the King of the dragons)
This book is (almost) everything I want in an art book. It’s full of gorgeous art from all stages of production, including lots of early sketches and ideas that were not used, which I love to see. Although each image only gets a few words, it adds up to a lot of information on what the team was thinking about character design, color, world building, and how the story was shaped. There are fun behind-the-scenes comments, like some of the silly nicknames for characters before they got their final ones (Hanna Solo!) And I love that they added several pages covered in cute sketches at the end. It’s a beautiful, high-quality book and if you love this series it’s a must have.
The book only has only one problem, but it’s a big one: the individual artists are never credited anywhere. Most “art of” books I’ve read credit every single image. At the very least, there should be a list somewhere in the book. The director of sales gets a mention but not one artist? WTF? I get that it’s a team effort and that the art belongs to the company, but come on...artists are too invisible as-is, recognize them by their names!
love love love this series. the art style is so gorgeous. I love the character designs, the concept art, the beautiful world they've created... its all SO. GOOD. I can't wait to see more of this saga and these characters, hopefully we'll get another art book in future!
This is a must have for The Dragon Prince fans and this is a very high 4 stars!!! The art is incredible and beautiful, you get to see both the final work and the first sketches, you get to understand how we get to the final result of the show!!! The art from the characters to the environment shots are incredible, and I really LOVE the use of color here!!! Just an excellent companion to the show!!!
This book is broken into five main parts. Early development, a chapter for each of the three seasons and an illustrations and extras section.
It's written in a way that lets you see how the show evolved over the course of the three seasons, which means you're not looking at just architecture or just characters for chapters at a time. You're following it from it's beginning to it's (current) end.
I write this everytime I review an "Art of..." book, but you don't need to see a review for this. If you like the show and you like art books then you know it's worth checking out.
And I write this everytime but my only criticism is that it's so short. You could devote this many pages to each of the three (soon to be seven!) seasons, but I suppose I am happy to take quality over quantity.
I got a burst of motivation and decided to reread this today for the first time in a while. It’s as beautiful as I remember!
I love art books as a principle, and this being the first one I ever read, I’m probably a bit biased. But nonetheless, this book is great. It showcases all sorts of beautiful concept art; the landscapes and backgrounds especially got some wonderful focus. I loved getting to see the final character designs and compare them to original concepts, and I especially liked the intro section at the beginning of the book to see where The Dragon Prince started. While I do think it would have been cool to get more of the concepts for characters in particular in words as well as pictures, I don’t mind that this art book is more, well, art focused than story-focused.
Also I just have to gush about the end of the book. Getting all the end credits in one place makes me so happy, and then the full-page poster art at the end? Wallpaper stuff; I love it so much.
This is a nostalgia heavy review; I know this show and this book probably aren’t the best of their respective categories, but I love them anyways. I really miss the first three seasons of TDP, and while I would love seeing one of these for the newer seasons, I don’t know if I would buy it since I really think this show never reached its previous heights. Oh well. Time to read the new Arcane art book instead.
*I received this book as an eARC from Dark Horse Books via edelweiss. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.*
The Dragon Prince is a beautiful tv show. This book showcases those visuals while giving an insight into how the show's aesthetic came to be. It details the conception and process of creating this series. The character designs. The creatures. I loved seeing the intent of diversity especially in background characters. Amaya's sign language and its evolution was also very interesting to learn about.
There's a lot of beautiful art in this book. This book is an inspiration for anyone interested in fantasy worlds. I give this book a 4/5.
This book's art is outstanding, but the information and commentary is minimal. The book shows several later concepts but no rough sketches, which would've been nice. The art itself is very good, especially the background paintings and environmental concepts. If a volume 2 ever releases, I will definitely buy it!
Un musthave pour les fans de la série ! Des planches de personnages, des paysages, des croquis, des palettes diverses pour les vêtements... Bref, un plaisir pour les yeux, avec un chouya de texte pour préciser des éléments. J'ai adoré 🥰
i havent seen tdp in YEARS but i will never turn down a skim of a good art book also i FORGOT AMAYA IS DEAF!!! YIPPEE ASL MINOR HERE WE'RE CHEERING!!!!
If you like Netflix’s The Dragon Prince, this is a GREAT book to get to further explore the design of the world and characters. It covers characters and settings from all 3 seasons currently on Netflix (when will we get an announcement date for season 4?!) and was just a fun little exploration. Heavy on illustrations and lighter on text, this is a perfect read for any Dragon Prince fan who loves the visuals as much as the story.
