Two wounded hearts find each other amidst a world-changing battle.

When I finished Parallel Seduction, I knew I have to find the next book fast and soon. So I was lucky that when I made my weekly trip to my local library I found Parallel Desire sitting on its shelf, as if simply waiting for me. I resisted doing a happy dance, as I greedily snatched it and put it in overflowing basket of books.


Parallel Desire picked up immediately right where Parallel Seduction ends. Now time-traveler Scott Dillon, in his wife’s murderer’s body, is stranded in the past, trying to find a purpose for his own existence. With Hope, now happily mated to his younger self, he had decided that eliminating his wife’s future killer would be the best way to secure her safety in this current timeline. Together, with medic Shelby Tyler, Scott embarks on a journey that will lead them into the hands of their enemies. As the battle between Refarians and Antousians continue to rage, Scott will be forced to embrace his own hybrid nature, heal his own hurts, and discover a new capacity to love.

I cannot say enough good things about this series, and after reading this book, it is definitely in my top ten list. I enjoy reading about this other Scott Dillon, the one that has experienced pain and loss, and his relationship with Shelby, who has experienced the same traumatic events in her own life. I also like the continuation of Jared and Kelsey’s story, and even Thea and Marco’s. It’s like reading a new story while hanging out with old friends.

To those who haven’t read this series, I highly recommend that you give this one a try. Definitely worth the read.

Unparalleled, Please don't let this be the end!
With her steamiest book yet, author Diedre Knight brings back all the major pairs from her previous `Parallel' books. Knight wraps all the loose relationship threads here with a nice little bow, but leaves the series with the battle kicked up a notch and no resolution. And if this is truly the final book, I found that a bit dissatisfying hence the 1/2 star drop in the rating.

Parallel Desire is science fiction romance with a paranormal feel set against a secret battle between two alien races, one out to enslave the earth and steal our bodies and another to protect us. The good guys have the power of time travel but there are no worries about paradox here, because time travel is to a parallel universe.

In the last book, Parallel Seduction (Midnight Warriors, Book 3), we met both of the leads, Jake and Shelby. Jake Tierney is a traveler from a parallel future, who travels back to kill the man who murdered his beloved wife/soulmate and unborn child, a loss which destroyed the man Jake used to be. If you've read the previous book you will know Jake's original identity, if not it sounds a bit confusing but he uses the hated power of his alien race to become Jake Tierney by taking the murderer's identity after stealing the murderer's body and out of self-loathing he discards his original name and assumes the murderer's. Jake is truly tortured and immersed in grief, and loosing this universe's version of his wife in the last book - this time not to death but to his younger self - has only deepened his pain. Now he lives on the verge of stalker-hood, calling her again and again just to hear her voice, envious of the happiness he once had. Happiness his younger self now enjoys. There is really nothing left to Jake but his crusade to find the Jake Tierney here in the past and kill him to save his 'wife' in this parallel time line.

The heroine Shelby, with her own heart scarred by loss, has her own triangle thing going on. She took care of Jake's original identity younger self and half way fell in love with him, but now finds herself deeply attracted to his anguished Jake incarnation. Jake and Shelby are both deeply sensual people and when Jake finds himself caught in a powerful attraction to Shelby, he sheds his celibacy with a vengeance. I expected their relationship to stay purely physical for longer in the book, but these two have shared pain and a soulmate connection -- Shelby quickly seeps into the cracks of Jake's broken heart and begins putting life back into his lifeless existence.

I really liked the relationship between the two leads, but there were a few things that didn't flow in the way the characters and their relationships were set up. A few more words from the author, Knight, could have smoothed out these rough spots. In addition to the body stealing ability, Jake's people are also shape shifters and their natural form sounds to be somewhat monstrous. Shelby had a very traumatic past experience with members of his race in shifted form and yet Knight has the two getting intimate while Jake is trapped in a shift. Shelby was alien too, so I didn't have a problem with them being intimate in that form, but my problem was that the chapter starts out in the middle of the scene with them already in bed and with how freaked out Shelby was with the other shifted aliens, and by her awful memories, I just couldn't see how Jake and Shelby would have ever gotten to that point of attempting intimacy in that situation.

My other issue with the book, is the that the overarching plot that carried through the books doesn't get resolved here. If this is truly the final book in the series, Knight could have used Shelby's very cool time-walking ability and her relationship with one of the major bad guys to have somehow turned the tide and left us knowing that the good guys would succeed and save the Earth. But I suppose, that by leaving the world in peril Knight has left the series open should she ever want to jump to the future a bit and pick up the story.

Even with my minor issues, I really did enjoy this book and the series. If you haven't been fortunate enough to discover the little connected short, Parallel Fire (Anna and Nevin's story), available here on Amazon, I recommend that you do -- it's a great opportunity for one last steamy foray into this wonderful parallel world.

หนังสือเล่มสุดท้ายในชุด Midnight Warriors ของเดียเดร ไนท์ กับเรื่อง Paralle Desire

ก่อนอื่นคงต้องขอกล่าวชมเชยเดียเดรเลยนะคะ ในฐานะที่อดีตเธอเคยเป็นตัวแทนนักเขียน (และปัจจุบันก็ยังเป็นเจ้าของบริษัทตัวแทนนักเขียน ที่ติดอันดับทรงอิทธิพลมากที่สุดหนึ่งในสิบในอเมริกา) เดียเดรรู้ใจนักอ่านยิ่งกว่านักเขียนดังหลายคน นั่นคือ เธอรู้ว่า เมื่อใดถึงเวลาที่ควรจะจบ

แต่ก่อนแม็กซ์มักคิดเสมอว่า ไม่อยากให้หนังสือจบชุด อยากให้มันต่อยอดไปเรื่อย ๆ เพราะเราจะได้เจอกับตัวละครในเล่มก่อน ๆ ที่ยังคิดถึงกันอยู่ รู้เห็นความเป็นไปของพวกเขาว่าชีวิตไปถึงไหนกันบ้าง แต่หลังจากอ่านหนังสือชุดที่ยาวยืดออกทะเล รอคอยเท้งเต้งรอวันฉลามกินหลายชุด แม็กซ์ก็ชักเกิดอาการเบื่อว่า ไหงนักเขียนถึงไม่จบชุดสักกะที ไขปริศนาในเรื่องให้จบไปหน่อยได้หรือเปล่า

อันที่จริงชุด MW (ชุดนี้มีชื่อไม่เข้ากับเนื้อเรื่องเอาเสียเลย) ยังไม่จุดที่น่าเบื่อหรอกนะ แต่ตัวละครที่มีความสำคัญในเรื่องเริ่มลดหายลงไป อันที่จริงถ้าเดียเดรจะทู่ซี้เขียนต่อก็ไม่เสียหายนะ เพราะยังมีประเด็นเปิดให้เล่นอีกหลายจุด แต่เธอเข้าใจ และเชื่อมั่นในตัวเองมากพอว่าจะสามารถเริ่มต้นชุดใหม่ได้ โดยไม่ต้องขายของเก่ากิน

และนั่นคือเรื่องน่าชื่นชม นั่นเพราะจุดขายใหญ่ของ MW คือพล็อตเรื่อง นี่เป็นหนังสือที่แม็กซ์ยกนิ้วให้ในเรื่องพล็อตที่มีความคิดสร้างสรร และแหวกแนว ท่ามกลางหนังสือแนวพารานอมอลที่มีดาษดื่น เดียเดรสร้างความแตกต่างได้

แม็กซ์อยากจะเรียกหนังสือชุดนี้ว่า ไซไฟโรแมนซ์ แม้ว่าจะไม่มีหลักการทางวิทยาศาสตร์ที่น่าสนใจ หรือเป็นวิชาการ แต่มันก็ไม่ใช่พารานอมอลชนิดที่มีแวมไพร์ เสือดาว หรือหมาป่า ทว่าในเรื่องเล่าถึงกลุ่มเอเลี่ยนที่ทำทุกวิถีทางเพื่อปกป้องโลกมนุษย์ของ เรา

ชาวราฟาเลี่ยนมีประสบการณ์อันเจ็บปวดจากพวกแอสทรูเชี่ยนที่ทำลายล้างดาวของ พวกเขา และเพื่อแอสทรูเชี่ยนหันมามองโลกเป็นเป้าหมายต่อไป เจเร็ด เบนเน็ตต์กษัตริย์แห่งราฟาเลี่ยนจึงพากองพลของพวกเขามายังโลกเพื่อปกป้อง

อันที่จริงราฟาเลี่ยนและแอสทรูเชี่ยนเป็นกลุ่มคนที่มีลักษณะทางพันธุกรรมที่ เหมือนกัน นั่นคือเป็นสองร่าง ร่างนึงมีรูปร่างหน้าตาไม่แตกต่างจากมนุษย์ (ในเรื่องบอกว่ามีดีเอ็นเอตรงกับมนุษย์ 99.99%) แต่อีกร่างของพวกเขาเป็นพลังงานคล้ายคลื่นความร้อนที่สามารถเผาผลาญได้ ทุกอย่าง ความแตกต่างเกิดขึ้นเมื่อแอสทรูเชี่ยนซึ่งหลงใหลในเทคโนโลยี ตัดสินใจเดินหน้าในการตัดแต่งพันธุกรรม และฝังชิฟคอมพิวเตอร์ในร่างกาย ปัญหาก็คือเมื่อเกิดไวรัสคอมพิวเตอร์ระบาด ชาวแอสทรูเชี่ยนล้มตายอย่างไม่อาจรักษาได้ ไม่ว่าเทคโนโลยีของพวกเขาเจริญมากเพียงใด

ผู้นำคนนึงของแอสทรูเชี่ยนค้นพบทางออกจากความตายอันไม่อาจหลีกเลี่ยงได้นั้น นั่นคือละทิ้งร่างแรกของพวกเขา ปลดปล่อยตัวเองเป็นเพียงคลื่นพลังงาน แล้วจากนั้นค้นหนร่างกายใหม่ ซึ่งมนุษย์โลกเป็นร่างให้พวกเขาเป็นอย่างดี (ในเรื่องไม่บอกว่าทำไมถึงไม่ใช้ร่างของราฟาเลี่ยน แต่เข้าใจว่า เพราะราฟาเลี่ยนเองก็เป็นคลื่นพลังงาน จึงไม่น่าจะเข้าครอบครองร่างได้)

อย่างที่บอกหนังสือชุดนี้ซับซ้อน และมีสิทธิงงได้มาก ๆ ถ้าไม่ได้อ่านตั้งแต่เล่มแรก แม็กซ์แนะนำให้อ่านตั้งแต่เล่มหนึ่งนะคะ ใช้ความพยายามสักหน่อยในการผ่านชั่งครึ่งแรกของเล่มแรก แต่หลังจากนั้นเรื่องจะน่าสนใจขึ้น และมีพล็อตเรื่องท��่น่าสนใจมาก

แม็กซ์เคยรีวิวเล่มหนึ่งถึงสามแล้ว และขอบอกเลยว่า ถ้าคุณยังไม่ได้อ่าน แล้วคิดว่าชีวิตนี้อยากจะอ่าน ก็ขอแนะนำว่าอย่าอ่านรีวิวอันนี้ค่ะ เพราะว่าสปอยล์แหลก เนื่องจากเล่าเรื่องไม่ได้แน่ถ้าไม่สปอยล์เพราะมันโคตรจะซับซ้อน ขนาดเล่าไปก็ยังงงไปเองเลย

แต่เป็นพล็อตที่ดีโคตรเช่นกัน

เจค เทียร์นี่ย์พระเอกของเราหลังจากสูญเสียโฮปภรรยาไปด้วยน้ำมือของเจค เทียร์นี่ย์ (งงแล้วล่ะสิ) ชีวิตของเขาก็ไม่เหลืออะไรอีก นอกจากการรับใช้กษัตริย์แห่งราฟาเลี่ยนของเขา และเมื่อศึกที่รบถึงตาจน กองทัพอันเหน็ดเหนื่อยของพวกเขากำลังจะแพ้การรบครั้งสุดท้าย เขาก็ขอปฏิบัติภารกิจสุดท้ายเช่นกัน เพื่อยับยั้งแผนชั่วของมาร์โคคนทรยศ ซึ่งเป็นอดีตองครักษ์ประจำกายกษัตริย์ ด้วยการเดินทางข้ามเวลาย้อนกลับมาสิบปี

ซึ่งเวลาที่เจคเดินทางย้อนกลับมา ก็ตรงกับชั่วเวลาในปัจจุบันที่เรืองในหนังสือกำลังดำเนินอยู่ แต่อดีตที่เผชิญหน้าเจคกลับไม่ใช่อดีตที่เขาจดจำได้ นั่นก็เพราะการเดินทางมาของมาร์โค กลับกลายเป็นการเปลี่ยนแปลงประวัติศาสตร์ทั้งหมด

ราฟาเลี่ยนไม่ได้แพ้สงคราม โลกมนุษย์ไม่ได้ถูกทำลายล้างโดยระเบิดนิวเคลียร์ และที่สำคัญโฮปภรรยาของเขาไม่ตาย เพียงแต่ว่าเจคก็ไม่อาจได้เธอมากลับคืนเช่นกัน นั่นก็เพราะว่าโฮปแต่งงานอย่างมีความสุขอยู่กับตัวของเขานั่นเอง (นั่นก็คือเวอร์ชั่นอดีตของเจค)

ฟังแล้วก็งง แม็กซ์จะพยายามอธิบายคอนเซ็ปต์หลักการข้ามเวลาของเดียเดรแล้วกัน เมื่อมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงอดีตจะทำให้เหตุการณ์อนาคตที่เกิดขึ้นไปแล้ว (จากอดีตรูปแบบที่หนึ่ง) จะแยกตัวออกจากอดีตที่ถูกเปลี่ยนแปลง ไม่อาจมาบรรจบกันได้ แต่ไม่ได้ทำให้ตัวตนของคนในอนาคตหายไปในทันใด โลกอนาคตที่โลกมนุษย์ถูกทำลายโดยอาวุธนิวเคลียร์ก็ยังมีอยู่ เพียงแต่ไม่ได้เกิดในอดีตที่ถูกเปลี่ยนแปลง เส้นเวลาถูกแตกออกเป็นสองเส้นจากเหตุการณ์ที่ทำให้เกิดความเปลี่ยนแปลง

ปัญหาก็คือเจค เทียร์นี่ย์ เขาติดอยู่ในอดีต ไม่อาจกลับไปอนาคตได้ ในขณะเดียวกันในอดีต (หรือปัจจุบันของคนอ่าน) ก็ยังมีตัวตนของเขาเหลืออยู่ และเมื่อใดก็ตามที่คนทั้งสองเจอกัน ทั้งคู่ก็จะสูญสลายไปตามกฎแห่งการเดินทางข้ามเวลา

และเพื่อให้เรื่องยุ่งเข้าไปอีก นั่นก็คือ แท้จริงแล้วเจค เทียร์นี่ย์ไม่ใช่ร่างกายที่แท้จริงของพระเอกหรอกนะ ตัวตนของเขาดั้งเดิมคือสก๊อต ดิลล่อน์ที่ด้วยความแค้นที่ต้องสูญเสียภรรยาไปด้วยน้ำมือของเจค เทียร์นี่ย์ สก๊อตเข้าครอบครองร่างกายของเจค และกลายเป็นเจค

เรื่องที่เล่าไปทั้งหมดนี่ เกิดขึ้นระหว่างเล่มหนึ่งถึงสาม นั่นก็คือ Parallel Attraction (เรื่องของจาเร็ตกษัตริย์แห่งราฟาเลี่ยน), Parallel Heat (เรื่องของมาร์โค เวอร์ชั่นที่เขาไม่ใช่คนทรยศอีกต่อไป), Parallel Seduction (เรื่องของสก๊อต เวอร์ชั่นในอดีตที่ไม่ได้สูญเสียโฮปไป)

ในเล่มนี้ Paralle Desire เป็นเรื่องราวที่เจค ออกตามหาตัวตนของเจค เทียร์นี่ย์ คนที่จะเป็นฆาตกรฆ่าโฮปในอนาคต เพื่อไม่ให้เขามีโอกาสทำอันตรายโฮปได้อีก

เรื่องนี้เป็นเล่มที่แม็กซ์สารภาพว่าไม่อยากอ่านเสียเท่าไหร เพราะอดีตของเจคเจ็บปวดมาก และปัญหาของเขาก็ไม่มีทางแก้ หญิงสาวที่เขารักยังมีชีวิตอยู่ และเธอก็รักเขา เพียงแต่ไม่ใช่เขาที่เป็นเจค แต่เป็นตัวตนของเขาสมัยที่ยังคงเป็นสก๊อตอยู่ เจคกลืนไม่เข้าคายไม่ออก ตัดใจจากโฮปก็ไม่ขาด พระเอกอย่างนี้ไม่น่าอ่านเลย

แต่เดียเดรก็พิสูจน์ว่าเธอแน่ ในการทำให้เรื่องราวความรักระหว่างเจคและเชลลี่ย์ดูจับต้องได้ และเหมือนจริง สำหรับเชลลี่ย์ แม็กซ์ถูกบดบังด้วยความที่เธอเป็นพยายามทำให้หลงคิดไปว่า เธอจะต้องมีนิสัยอย่างพยาบาลในนิยายไทย แต่แม็กซ์ก็คิดผิด และนั่นทำให้เรื่องนี้ดีมากในความคิดของแม็กซ์

เชลลี่ย์เองก็บาดเจ็บจากความรักมาไม่น้อยกว่าเจค นิสัยเปิดเผย ตรงไปตรงมาของเธอ ทำให้แม็กซ์รู้สึกว่า มันเป็นไปได้อย่างมากที่เจคจะละทิ้งอดีต ยอมรับกับความจริงที่ว่า โฮปคนที่เขารัก และรักเขาได้ตายไปแล้วในอีกหกปีข้างหน้า เธอไม่ใช่ผู้หญิงคนเดียวกับโฮปในอดีตที่อยู่อย่างมีความสุขกับสก๊อต และถึงเวลาแล้วที่เขาจะเริ่มต้นความรักอีกครั้งกับคนที่ได้หัวใจของเขาไป ครอง

แม็กซ์ชอบที่เมื่อเจคเปิดใจ เขาเปิดเต็มร้อย และไม่ลังเลที่จะรักเชลลี่ย์

และเพราะเล่มนี้เป็นเล่มจบชุด จึงมีหลายประเด็นที่ถูกทิ้งท้ายเอาไว้ในหลายเล่มมาสรุปรวบจบในเล่ม ทำให้เรื่องราวของเจคและเชลลี่ย์โดนขโมยซีนบ่อยมาก และอาจขัดใจคนที่อยากอ่านเรื่องโรแมนซ์เยอะ ๆ แต่สำหรับแม็กซ์แล้วโอเคนะคะ เพราะแม็กซ์ชอบชุดนี้เพราะพล็อต เรื่องราวของคนอื่นเป็นส่วนประกอบสำคัญที่ทำให้พล็อตเรื่องเดินไปได้

และเห็นพูดชมอย่างนี้ก็ไม่ใช่ว่าชุดนี้หรือเล่มนี้สนุกโคตรหรอกนะ มันมีข้อเสีย เยอะด้วย ตัวเอกในเล่มนี้ไม่ค่อยมีน้ำยาเท่าไหร โดนผู้ร้ายจับไปเป็นอาชีพ โดนจับแต่ละทีก็เจ็บหนักกลับมาตลอด แล้วการจบเรื่องก็ไม่ถึงกับ And they lived ever after หรอกนะ สงครามยังดำเนินไป เพียงแต่อนาคตสดใสมากกว่าตอนที่เจคย้อนเวลากลับมามากนัก

คะแนนเฉพาะเรื่อง เล่มนี้ได้ 70 เท่ากับ Paralle Attraction และ Paralle Heat (คะแนนอาจจะไม่เท่ากับตอนที่แม็กซ์รีวิวทีแรกนะคะ ส่วนใหญ่แม็กซ์จะมีการรีวิวรอบสอง และคะแนนก็มักจะลดลง) และน้อยกว่า Paralle Seduction ที่ได้ 73 เล็กน้อย

สิ่งที่น่าสนใจก็คือ สำหรับแม็กซ์แล้ว หนังสือชุดนี้เป็นไปหลักการตลาดที่เรียกว่า Synergy นั่นคือผลรวมของ 1+1 มากกว่า 2 เพราะเมื่ออ่านทั้งสี่เล่มในภาพรวมของหนังสือชุดแล้ว แม็กซ์ให้คะแนนชุดนี้อยู่ที่ 83 ค่ะ

เป็นหนังสือโรแมนซ์ที่สร้างสรรที่สุดชุดนึงที่แม็กซ์ได้อ่านในช่วงหลายปีที่ผ่านมาก

Excellent series

I loved reading about Jake and Shelby, just as I have Scott and Hope, Marco and Thea, and of course Jared and Kelsey. Theirs stories are part of the bigger story of the Refarians, and there seems like that story is left unfinished.

TBR Challenge 2012: March category-- Series Catch-Up (pick a book from a series you're behind on)
This book has been on my to read list since Jan 7, 2010. I've had difficulty finding it since it's oop, but finally found one in a used book store recently.

SFR Reading Challenge 2012 8/15

A decent SFR but it could have been better. A long break between reading the previous book in the series and this one didn't help my enjoyment any, but that wasn't the only reason this book fell short of the others in the series. The plot didn't make a lot of sense, and the relationships became the main storyline instead of a good balance between the story and the relationships. Much of the dialogue felt stilted and unnatural as well.

Since it's been several years now and no other book ahs been forthcoming in this series, i guess we won't find out exactly what happens in the War between the Antousians and the Rafarians for control of Earth. I'm guessing since we're still here it must have turned out okay. ;-)

When I first started this book I was kinda uninterested. The main characters are Jake and Shelby which I wasn't thinking it would be. It just seemed weird since Jake is Scott... anyway read it, it was great! There's a lot that happens, it's action-packed. I didn't like this one as much as the other 3 books in the series I will admit. Something about it just didn't catch my attention as much as the others.
