I read this book many years ago - late 80’s or early 90’s. It was on my mom’s bookshelf. I picked it up and starting reading it and couldn’t stop. I was never a big reader and this book made me realuze that reading fiction could be pure joy. Years of being told what to read by teachers and professors had soured me on the experience. This book was the turning point. A must read for anyone interested in the immigrant experience in America.

This is a great story. it is a beautiful love story as well as telling a history of life in the us when the jews first came to this country. i find the characters very interesting and it was a very good book. It is a big book but well worth reading.
