I wanted to be right, at the beginning of our fight, but the longer time goes on, the more I see the truth of what was real and what wasn’t. None of that matters, though, because my pride won’t let me admit I was wrong.
“I can’t, Chet.”
He huffs, “Why the hell not?”
“Because I—” can’t handle the inevitable rejection. I go for another honest answer. “I fucked it all up.”
His brows rise slightly. “Huh.” Rubbing his chin, he continues, “I assumed he did. I mean, I expected that he did anyway. With how he’s been acting, it’s like he can’t forgive himself for something.”
