To her credit, the author does create a very realistic world in which these characters live, and one in which the reader is easily immersed. “On a City Street” would make a great Hallmark movie.

I was fortunate to read this new novel by Pat Wahler before the general public. If you think this will be a straight-forward romance with the same-old plot, or girl meets boy, think again. On a City Street has more twists and turns than many St. Louis neighborhoods, which is where it takes place.

This contemporary suspense/romance for the animal lover revolves around a veterinarian young woman who leaves the cushy life of the suburbs to upstart a new clinic in the inner city to heal a broken heart. It revolves around many deep-seeded themes involving the hood's resistance to neutering, dog fighting, and struggles of the youth not to be tempted towards crime. I just could not get into these characters, didn't find them believable, or feel particularly invested in them. The plot was weak, and didn't keep my interest. I could not force myself to read any more.

This is a sweet little romance, a great light read for summer, with plenty of intrigue, a little danger, some shady characters, a troubled teen, and the most precious pitbull ever. And a bonus for this reader, it's set in the city of St. Louis. I enjoyed this one!

Pat Wahler weaves mystery and romance with a silver thread and if you're an animal lover, you'll score a gold medal with this read. Her characters are believable, yet unexpected. Carolyn Becker is strong, yet vunerable. Kept me turning every page to the end. Can't wait for her next one.
