Still Alive #4

Zombie Oasis

Rate this book
Mo Collins is surviving the zombie apocalypse, but it hasn’t been easy. So far he has gathered himself a group of misfits, and one monkey, to help carve out an island paradise in the middle of a world turned blue and ravenous by an unknown plague.

Mo’s home, the Viva Ancora, a replica pirate ship is filling up with a list of characters that would make George Romero proud. Along with the guidance of Smokes, his personal Oracle and direct link to what seems to be a scripted reality, he has saved his parents, broken his perfect brother and future sister-in-law out of prison, fought off a crazed military wannabe dictator and survived a plane crash. All in the same day!

So now that things seem under control on Guntersville Island you would think maybe life could began to take on some sense of normalcy and he could settle down with his girl and live out his life on this island oasis. Guess again. Life just isn’t meant to be easy when you seem to be the Hero of a predestined movie script.

So hang on! The ride is about to get wilder and travel into uncharted territory. Next plot point of this movie: A cure? (Saw that one coming didn’t you?) New faces? New Adventures? New Villains? Does it ever end? Mo the reluctant Hero can’t help being just that, The Hero.

So here we are again on that same Alabama lake, where the fish bite, the Zombies bite…. and sometimes life bites.

Welcome ashore, friend, to Zombie Oasis.

Not the best

Not the best book of the 4 i have read so far. Half the book gone before Mo and smokes get a look in. To much wasted time on connecting the power and everyone that did venture out ended up shooting each other by mistake. I guess the standard was set pretty high with the previous books. Hope book 5 will not disappoint.

THIS IS ONE BOOK YOU SHOULD ALWAYS KEEP HANDY. JAVAN BONDS YOU ROCK!!!!

Another number #1 book from a number #1 Author and it doesn't look like Javan Bonds is going to slow down anytime soon. What a great book and all I can say is "I'm ready for Book #5, Zombie River Run". Javan always leaves you wanting more and this book is no different. With a possible cure on the horizon, Mo, Hammer and his "Band of Brothers" (yes even Captain Hammer, USMC is included in this lingo, it's a sign of respect, I served, I can include her that way if I choose) are off to see what they can find, little do they know that upon their departure, others have set their sights on "Guntersville". This series is the best, if your having a bad day or just need a quick pick me up, during your lunch break, this is the book and series to keep handy. It will make you smile, laugh and know all is right with the world. This is one book you should always keep handy. Javan Bonds, you ROCK!!!

This is the fourth book in the Still Alive series and there seems to be more story than dialect, but I’m not complaining. We are introduced to new characters, some short lived and rightfully so! You must enjoy dark humor and gore to be able to stomach some of the scenes in this book, if you’re uptight and squeamish…this book isn’t for you. To me in a genre where it’s all been written before, you need to think outside the box and give your audience something different, and Javan is doing just that. Salzman is THE man and keeps giving me what I want with his narration.

Note: This is Book 4 in the series and it really does work best if you’ve read the first 3.

It was fun and had me snort laughing at inappropriate moments. It wasn’t my favorite of the series so far though. I think that is because the first half of the book spends time kind of recapping what other people are doing and also brings in some new characters that I think will be important later in the series. The second half returns us to Mo’s fumbling hands where I felt comfortable just being myself and laughing at his commentary on life.

These stories are full of juvenile humor, true, but also humor that pokes fun at life’s ‘isms’ (racism, sexism, ageism, teratophobia, homophobia, etc.). That makes me laugh because we all know people with hangups and these books show just how silly those hangups are in the face of cannibalistic nudists. Sometimes the grundge talk (how gooey those zombies really are) goes a little far for me so I don’t recommend eating while listening to this book.

Mo’s little Zombie Island (really Guntersville Island) is coming along well and the residents are in such a good place that they want to bring in more survivors. Mo must assemble a crew to take the pirate ship Viva Ancora out on a hunt. The story does leave us on a cliff hanger with the crew selected and the ship ready to sail. The crew includes Mo’s older brother, Easy, who makes me laugh because he’s such a studly dunce. Smokes and the best prepared guy in the wheelchair (with his monkey Mary) will be going as well. Hammer and Crow will also be joining them. Turns out Crow can cook far more than boring fish, proving Mo’s theory that she makes such a disappointing dish just to irritate him.

The ladies get a little more page time, but pretty much they are mothers, wives, and romantic interests. And the story pokes fun at that over used trope too. Still, I think the ladies have more to contribute. Aka (the engineer) and Easy do get married (and Crow made a scrumptious cake for the wedding). Mo gets some time with his love, even if she’s upset that he plans to go out into danger on this new mission. Mo’s mom puts in several appearances, all being motherly (especially about grammar and swearing).

All around, it was a fun addition to the series even if it wasn’t the best. 4/5 stars.

The Narration: S. W. Salzman was a lot of fun as the narrator for this book. I feel like he enjoys giving this series a voice. His voice for Mo is still my favorite, being a heavy Alabama accent. He also does well with all the female voices. I liked his version of the serial killer from Silence of the Lambs, who kinda gets a cameo in this story. The pacing was perfect and there were no tech issues with the recording. 5/5 stars.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. My opinions are 100% my own.

If you had told me a year ago that I would be listening to a book full of blue peevies/bluenatics (blue zombies), crude and politically incorrect dialogue, and references to nerdy pop culture, I would have laughed. Instead, I am laughing myself silly listening to another great addition to this great series!

Javan Bonds has taken zombies to another level in his "Still Alive" series. This is definitely a NSFW (not safe for work) book. If you try to listen in the company of others, be prepared have your sanity questioned. There are plenty of LOL moments, but there are also some poignant parts as protagonists discover the fate of loved ones.

I love all of the references to comic book characters, horror and sci-fi movies and TV shows. The characters are great and I can really relate to most of them. Be warned: if you are easily offended by cursing, blue peevie poop, political incorrectness or graphic violence involving numerous body parts, don't try these books. But, if you love the zombie genre and you are looking for a fresh take, give it a try.

Mr. Salzman's narration continues to define Mr. Bonds' characters. When I read the "real" version of these books, I hear his voices in my head. His characterization of Mo, Smokes, and friends is amazing and really adds a lot to the enjoyment of these books. I really can't imagine anybody else narrating these books.

I just hope that Mr. Bonds has many more books waiting in his amazing imagination because anytime that I want LOL entertainment along with a great Zompoc story, I know that this series will be just the right one to grab! I was given the chance to listen to the audiobook version of this book by the author/narrator and chose to review it.

Another journal from the Post-Apocalyptic future as told by Mo Collins

Mo and Easy Collins couldn't be less alike, but that didn't detract from their roles in the Great Screenplay. Mo has heard that there was a cure to the zombie pandemic somewhere in the Gulf. A cure to the disease that kills anyone scratched or bitten by an infected. Death follows quickly, but not for long. They rise, take off all their clothes, turn blue and start eating living thing not already infected. You can understand why a cure would be important with the number of blue cannibals exceeding the number of uninfected a million to one, or so. So Mo is going to load up his pirate ship, the "Viva Ancora" or just the "Cora", with everything and everybody on the island, almost.
The easy humor gently interspersed throughout the tale of one cast of characters' struggles against the poop spreading, cannibalistic blunatics. Elmo " Mo" Collins is the leader and main protagonist of a diverse group loving on a zombie free island. A remarkable cast accompanies Mo as he attempts to restore normalcy to an abnormal world. Truly an amazing and humorous storyline with characters I can't easily understand, but can sympathize. Quirky humor. Altogether a great read!

This series covers everything and so much more beware you must act and thing as a real southern redneck or as the legends describe rednecks.
I am writing this and waiting in book 7 to be released it adventures of MO and his band of humans after a virus is released and turn people into zombies not your normal zombies but they are blue, constantly hungry and erect cock. Now as the story goes on you find these zombies are changing and growing, they getting faster, groups are nesting with a queen who does nothing but get bred and have more zombies. Now for the remnants of human they are not doing to well they keep killing each other by accident or as food source. Killing for food is a minster who came to town and started killing the children of the members of his flock and they are stupid enough not question him when he feeds them and they do not know they are eating their own children they have taken the minster at his word and blind faith.
There is so many plots, storylines and adventures you need to either read or listen to them so remember your are A Southern Redneck no education or brains trying to survive the blue zombies who wants to eat you.

First, make sure you're not eating while listening to this series because these blue nudists' zombies are just nasty. Second, just when you think you've read and heard it all in the zompoc genre, Javan Bonds throws in a new and brilliant twist. Third, I never thought killing off characters can be funny. Seriously, Bonds is incredibly creative and hilarious, with phenomenal imagination that captivating his readers/listeners.

The action and gore ratchet up in the Zombie Oasis, the fourth edition of the Still Alive series. The point-of-views shift between a few of the main protagonists, allowing the readers/listeners to connect with the characters fully. Mo is still the hero, and he continues to make us laugh with his politically-incorrect thought and dialogue.

A stellar performance by S.W. Salzman, his portrayal of the characters and their colorful personalities, was flawless. Kudos to both author and narrator!

I love this series. It’s actually my favorite zombie series ever. While book 4 didn’t give me as many laugh out loud moments as some of the other books It still had quite a few.
I’m excited to see where Mo and crew end up. Can’t believe they are running after a football trophy for his brother. Hopefully they do find the Dr’s with a cure along the way. It is their main goal.Smokes better be looking out for everyone!
If you need a laugh, a good zombie series and don’t get disgusted by talk of poop you should read this series! Javan never fails to deliver!
Salzman does an amazing job of narrating and he has made it to #3 on my all time favorite narrators list.
Hurry up and release the audio version of book 5..... & 6..... & 7!

There action, comedy, a zombies story with a different twist.
This audiobook has corse language and some violence. Something which I expect in a zombie book.
Again the narrator has done a great job and giving each character the individual voices, making them come alive.
These books get better with each book.

Cool

I really enjoy the characters in this series. They manage to make the apocalypse fun. New characters are introduced in this episode and one of them is Mo's cousin. His group has some interesting backstory. I'm really lookin forward to book 5 and learning about the newest quest.

The story only gets better and better in this series. Although Javan Bonds wrote these books back in 2017, 4 years ago, i feels as if he has been reading my reviews and acted accordingly! He uses much less cuss words and no more graphic sexual situations. He did step up the gore and mayham, but that should be expected from books on this subject mater. Lots of action. I cant wait to read book 5

The horror increases, yet the laughs go on. The character development is well done....some old, some new. The creatures, are zombie-like, but worse.... their evolution has become the stuff of nightmares. I enjoyed this book, it is different. A good read, an enjoyable series.

Excellent book!

I am really enjoying this series of books. They are so funny and 'The Hero' is so reluctant! Each character has a role and they feel like they are following script from a zombie movie. This instalment was great! On to book 5!

This was a gruesome addition to this series! Wow, talk about a lot of shoot outs with some well described entry and exit wounds. Plus, lots of infected losing their bowel movements, literally. Along with that, a new characters and the plans for a new travels.

This is a building book, it builds the characters, adds some new ones, builds some of the story parts the writer hasn't been able to tell you before, so it might not be like the other books but still very important and yes it still has some very funny parts. One of the new characters you will meet is Mo's cousin Benji, a Naval flight officer (NFO), and his crew who have been out looking for survivors across the southeastern US. But now that the crew of the Viva Ancora are getting ready to go down river to look for this doctor that is said to have a cure for the peevies, Benji and his eye in the sky will be more helpful than ever.

This was another great book/audio by Bonds who can turn the littlest thing into big bad Mo killing, peevie pooping thing, that will have you laughing so hard that you won't be able to go to sleep, so best not to read these books at night. If you have the audio than its even better because you can hear Mo complain about it all in a Mo voice that narrator S W Salzman does so well along with all the other characters. It is so worth it! Bond and Salzman are a awesome team and I hope they are together for many many more.
