well i am a muslim, i know things about islam pretty well but he came up with ideas that were considered kind of new to me, like things that non muslims can use against muslims and i didnt even know about, so he discusses these things in details and convinces u in the right idea and shows u what is really meant by those sentences that are ignorantly used by non muslims to ruin the religion islam . so far its a great book and i love it

Had it been written in this century, the whole context of the book would have been different. Nonetheless, it covers various topics in which Islam is misunderstood and are relevant even today.

In summarising the arguments, I'll mention three significant matters the Qutb elaborated upon:

1. Islam believe in gradual change rather than revolutionary/radical change (expect if it is against a 'tyrant' ruler).

A very interesting read even though has been written more than 5 decades ago. Good insights on Islam & Punishment besides a good critique of both capitalism and communism. But as you progress on reading, the books sounds very reactionary and biased against West, even though the author points many realities. Also, the section on Women and Islam is not satisfactory at all. It paints a very chauvinistic image. Women have been once again stereotyped in the book by being labelled as 'emotional' a ...more

This book has some very interesting and convincing arguments against the criticisms against Islam, like how Islam does not really support slavery, how Islam is neither capitalist nor communist and freedom of thought in Islam. There are some opinions that I tend to disagree, like how the author tries to justify the restricted freedom of women, which I feel is behind the times. Nevertheless, you don't have to agree with everything in the book to recommend reading others to read the book. I recomme ...more

I first read this when I was around 13. I was highly impressed and convinced by the apologetics. That was then.

A beautiful book indeed. Anyone, no matter his religion, who studies the book without any prejudice will surely tend to see Islam in a completely different manner.
