This novella is a powerful and reflective look at tragedy and acceptance. Wilfredo Gonzalez forces us to look closely at the often frayed thread that binds and hold a community together. Reminded me very much of Ephesians 4:3 - Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Characters are sharp and the dialogue is crisp - highly recommended.

Clay Hats is a novella set in an inner-city neighborhood in Rochester, New York. The story is written in 1st person, which gives a great sense of Brians (the narrators) thoughts and feelings. His perspective on the neighborhood crisis is naturally limited, but also unique, given what he experiences.

Brians relationship with his wife, Karen, and daughter, Christy, is entertaining, and real. I love the dialogue in this book. As a novella, the speed of the book is impactful, and every sentence

The author did a great job with the dialogue in this story, hitting the ground running so to speak and getting you invested in the characters from the start. Anyone could relate to this story; this could be anyone's neighborhood, with realistic problems. It's intelligently written, clean, and there's a good balance of drama and humor. The focus of the book drives the reader in a good direction, leaving the reader feeling encouraged. The ending is very rewarding.

There is a quote by Margaret Mead that reads Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. That quote encompasses the heart of this book. Brian and Karen live in what is considered a rough neighborhood. Brian is injured on his job and a neighbor he has never met before shows up at just the right time to mow his yard in the summer and shovel his snow in the winter. Brian learns that not everything can be taken at ...more
