For the past couple years, I have been on a journey to diversify my bookshelf and this has become even more important to me after having my son.

As an educator, I am connecting with families daily and observe the various family structures which aren’t always represented in the books we share with our students. We can do better. We are engaging in conversations about viewing our classrooms through an equity lens and committing to providing inclusive classroom materials. When children know that their family is valued by their teachers, it sends a message that they belong in that classroom.

In my own home, I want to have these conversations early and often with my child which is why I purchased this beautiful board board to celebrate diverse family structures. I Love Us: A Book about Family provides a glimpse of a variety of different families doing things that they love - cooking, reading, playing. This book will help your child(ren) develop pride in their own family while exposing them to the diverse world around them. Little ones will come to understand that although families might appear to look different, there is a common theme that runs through them all: love.

I love that this book is in board book format and can be enjoyed with our littlest readers and they will be exposed to the beauty of our differences from a young age. My one year old loves reading this one over and over and enjoys the surprise mirror at the end where he gets to see his own family in the reflection. As an added bonus, there is family tree to complete in the back of the book.

Diversifying our bookshelf is just the beginning and I look forward to having conversations with my child from an early age.

On Independent Bookstore Day placed an order with Brave abs Kinds Books for I Love Us - A Book About Family, and y’all, this book is perfection! The inclusion is AMAZING. The diversity of races, biracial families, LGBT families, those with disabilities, families where grandparents are caretakers - yes to it all! The story is all about the things that families do together, whether eating, playing, reading, etc. One page is extra special to me because the little one is blowing kisses to grandparents via a screen device, which is something we do since my parents do not live in the same city as us. This is definitely a favorite! There is also a mirror on the last page so your own little family is reflected (my little one loved that!), and there is a fill in family tree. Such a special treasure! I highly recommend this book to everyone!

Beautiful! Beautiful! Beautiful!

This thick padded cardboard book is a beautiful story about families and all the ways we can describe families. This is a book for little ones but my 12 year old and I enjoyed it very much too! The story is very sweet and I love how inclusive it is with many different genders and races being represented.
Besides the fun suprise at the end, the illustrations are fantastic! It uses bright fun colors that bring out our emotions of love and warmth.

There is also a very cool family tree at the end of the book that you can use to make your own family tree.
I love this book!!!

Board book depicts various families having fun together. Features diversity in skin color and family makeup (kids raised by grandparents, single parent homes, possibly a family with two dads (not clear)). I would've preferred this book in a larger, picture book format, as the words and detailed illustrations would work well for a preschool storytime. Includes a mirror at the end, followed by a blank family tree encouraging readers to add the names of people they love.

A cute board book about the ways families love each other in small but significant ways. There's a mirror for the readers to see themselves and how they love each other at the end.

There are many things to love about your family. Families are special and unique like you and the things you do together help make your family stronger.
