Crimson Mage gives the readers a unique blend of apocalyptic, epic and urban fantasy that completely took me by surprise.

'The Council of the Seven, the seven mages, the seven chakras, the seven deadly sins... the seven circles of hell.'

This is how the Empire of the Lotus will either rise or fall.

'Upon the one hundredth reincarnation of the Lotus empress, the dark god Kashmeru would send out his shadow army—Pishacha—to destroy the reborn empress, which in turn would bring about the collap

A plot-driven, genre-bending fantasy romp set in a futuristic Asian dystopia. Though it has elements of both fantasy and sci-fi, this might appeal best to urban fantasy fans. Pacy and engaging, it's a novella-length story about a pair of mages on the run from the government while trying to rescue a reincarnated empress and save the world. While the worldbuilding was interesting, and I enjoyed a story featuring Indian and Korean protagonists, generally speaking I prefer more character-driven stor ...more

I received a free ARC from the publisher in exchange for review consideration.

The main feeling I got from this book is that it's just okay. It’s not amazing and it’s not terrible. It’s fine.
I didn’t care for the protagonists, but I didn’t dislike them either. I didn’t find them compelling or interesting. I just felt nothing towards them. They’re a little bland. The coolest character, the mentor, is gone from the story after fulfilling her expositional role.
The plot is basic: the Lotus Empress ha

Magical powers have been eradicated. Many of the mages have ended up in prison camps or dead, controlled by implants sending shock waves into their bodies wherever the magic in their blood resurfaced.
Mayhara, a former mage, is working for the government trying to collect enough money to get her parents out of a prison camp. But those serving Kashmeru have different ideas, and with her being now the elite Crimson mage, Mayhara becomes a prey. Together with Jae, her former schoolmate, they are tr

This book was our July/August 2020 Book of the Month selection. Read our full review on

"We’re introduced to the world of Mayhara Gautama through the pinging of her ComLinq. In futuristic New Asia, such technology is commonplace, but so is magic. This science fiction-fantasy-dystopian setting is what first drew me to Crimson Mage. Mayhara strives to keep herself in the mundane world, because working for the government means a chance to free her

I loved every chapter of this book. The intertwining of cultures, the unique, Chakra-based magic system (different "colored" Mages all wield different powers), the main character, Mayhara, who is calm, poised, and self-assured. The genre-splicing is great, too - dystopian-meets-epic with an urban twist. I'm very much looking forward to meeting the other Mages and seeing where things go from here.

BTW, when Mayhara used her magic to apply lipstick? Brilliant. I love magic that's lethal AND cosmeti

I purchased this book because of the amazing reviews on Amazon and oh boy, they were all right. this is also the first book I read from this author and will definitely wont be the last! Such a good book with great characters that keeps you obsessed with every page since the first one. I love fantasy books and the ones with magic on it are even better! I wanted to be Mayhara the hole story! I couldn't put this down until I ended. Can't wait for book two!

Crimson Mage by Dorothy Dreyer is Book 1 in her new Empire of the Lotus Series. I was given the opportunity to read an advance copy of this story.

Wow! Where do I start? This is my first exposure to Dorothy Dreyer’s work, but I want more! So much more!

Mayhara Guatama is The Crimson Mage. Though not at the top of her class at the Academy, she learns the Mage above her was murdered, making her The Elite Crimson Mage. And the purpose of the mages? To protect and serve The Lotus Empress.

This story is one that is beautifully written with amazingly beautifully characters. It starts off a little slower but picks up quickly. It is full of mystery, drama, and intrigue. It brings together elements of magic and action. It has many twists and turns throughout the story. It keeps you glued to the story as you need to see what happens next. You cheer for Mayhara and Jai as thy journey forth to find the empresses. Yes, the story does end in a cliffhanger and boy I can’t wait to read the n ...more

The world is truly one of a kind, amazing, breath-taking, and unique. There is magic, reincarnation, battles, subterfuge, and more! You are definitely not going to want to put this one down. When I first read this book, I couldn't get enough. I wanted more! I could go on and on, but I don't want to give any spoilers or ruin the epicness that is The Crimson Mage. I can't wait to get my hands on the next installment!
