Hunter: Desert Hunter / Alien Hunter / Galactic Gladiator Christmas

Rate this book
From the dangerous desert sands to the deadly glitz of the city, the lawless desert planet of Carthago is filled with lethal hunters risking it all for the women who capture their hearts.

HUNTER contains two novellas and one short story all set in the Galactic Gladiators series.

Desert Hunter: Desert Hunter Bren will do whatever it takes to protect the smart, beautiful Mersi from his darkest secrets.
NOTE: previously released as part of the 2018 Pets in Space Anthology

Born, raised, and sold into servitude on the desert world of Carthago, Mersi Kassar has finally found her freedom and her place on the Corsair Caravan, leading travelers from the gladiator city of Kor Magna through the desert. She also works side by side with her friend—the big, silent Bren—a man she’s desperately in love with. But stubborn Bren shuts down her every attempt to deepen the feelings they have for each other and Mersi isn’t sure she can take the pain anymore.

Desert hunter Bren Hahn hides a terrifying darkness within, and will protect the few people he cares about. That includes Mersi—a woman who sparks a simmering passion he finds harder and harder to ignore. On a perilous journey in the heart of the desert, Mersi and Bren rescue a strange alien creature. Working together to heal the big, shaggy canine, their smoldering desire ignites, but their feelings turn out to be the least of their concerns. A deadly enemy is hunting their new pet. An enemy that threatens Bren’s darkest secret and all they hold dear.

Alien Hunter: head of security Tannon Gi lets no one get close, until a feisty cocktail waitress explodes into his orderly life.
NOTE: this is a brand-new, never-before-published story

Mina Lan’Gar left the desert for a new life in the glitzy heart of Kor Magna known as the District. As a brand-new cocktail waitress at the hottest casino, the Dark Nebula, she’s just trying to get ahead, but all she seems to do is lock horns with the casino’s taciturn head of security, Tannon Gi. The man’s hard body, neat suits, and serious face make her want to mess him up a bit. When she overhears people conspiring to strike a private gladiator party the casino is hosting, she knows she needs to help Tannon stop the attack.

Once a deadly alien hunter assassin, Tannon finally left the life that was destroying him one kill at a time, and made a life for himself at the Dark Nebula Casino. Nothing and no one causes trouble on his watch, and that includes the mysterious woman from the desert who stirs feelings in him that he’s never felt before. When he and Mina find themselves swept up in a fierce passion and a deadly plot, they will soon learn that nothing is quite what it seems…

Stop ! This contains content you might already have read so please check as no one wants unhappy readers. That having been said welcome to my thoughts on yet another foray into the world that the Gladiators live in and the humans who have invaded their hearts and changed so much for the better.
Desert Hunter is a quick read that pits a stubborn woman against a very well meaning hero who really shouldn’t underestimate her. This couple have been circling around each other but it takes a huge dose of cuteness and a lot of danger to finally see them where they belong and obviously that’s together ! This was previously published in the anthology Pets in Space.
A Galactic Gladiators Christmas is really just a warm snippet that brings everyone we’ve got to know together on a very special day. It kind of is a thank you to the readers I think as it’s been a free read on the authors site but it also sets up for the possibility of more hostages been discovered and rescued in the future.
Alien Hunter is the final offering and I can confirm it is all brand new and shiny so definitely not something you have read before. It catches up with Tannon the head of security at the casino and introduces Mina who is quite a conundrum. I found this intriguing and sexy too ! Though unfortunately the dialogue and descriptions at times felt very contemporary and well human to be blunt. Still I did enjoy the twist at the end and look forward to reading more set in this world.
This is a voluntary take of an advanced copy and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

I especially loved Tannon and Mina’s story. The twist and surprising events at the end was very much unexpected.

Two cute novellas and one short story. Nice. Very similar to the other books - he hides a dark secret and feels that she deserves better - but a nice light read.

Hunter: Desert Hunter / Alien Hunter / Galactic Gladiator Christmas (Galactic Gladiators) immerses readers in a captivating sci-fi universe that masterfully weaves together an array of compelling elements. The narrative includes a diverse cast of bizarre creatures, skilled gladiators, kidnapped humans and harrowing trials that put characters to the ultimate test. The story unfolds with an intricate tapestry of secret plans, deep-rooted mysteries, intense action sequences, and the raw emotions of frustration, pain, and suffering, all interspersed with moments of unexpected romance.

The multi-perspective storytelling is a significant strength of this narrative, allowing readers to explore the inner thoughts and feelings of various characters. This depth enriches the overall experience, creating a more immersive and well-rounded story.

Life as a gladiator is portrayed as incredibly dark and perilous, where every moment is shadowed by deception and hidden agendas. It’s a brutal existence that not only challenges physical endurance but also tests the very limits of human spirit, shaping or dismantling the individuals who dare to fight for their survival.

If you are in search of a gripping and entertaining read that offers a blend of excitement and emotional depth, I highly recommend diving into this book.

Series: Galactic Gladiators #12
Rating: 3.5 stars

Desert Hunter: 4 stars

This story was previously released in Pets In Space: Embrace the Passion.

Mersi Kassar has been a part of the Corsair Caravan for years. Corsair and Bren saved her from the desert when she was a teenager and gave her her freedom. She has been in love with Bren for years but he refuses to let her close. When the caravan comes across a weird looking dog with a note asking for help Bren and Merci head out to find the person in need.

Merci and Bren’s story was really good. Bren has been pushing Merci away from years and she is really starting to get discouraged about his lack of feelings. While searching for a child in need she realizes he has been pushing her away for a different reason. He really does want her but is afraid of hurting her. The Taint was very interesting and I wish we could have learned more about it.

I really liked the "dog" in this story. He was a very interesting alien pet and really full of surprises. This was a great novella and I love that we are still learning things about this world.

A Galactic Gladiator Christmas: 4 stars
This was a very short Christmas story with the humans introducing the holiday to the gladiators. I really loved that we are getting these short stories that show everyone. It is always fun to check in and see how all the couples are.

Alien Hunter: 3 stars
Tannon, a member of Rillian's security team at the Dark Nebula, and Mina, a waitress at the Dark Nebula, have been leary of each other since she started the job. Tannon is concerned she is a security risk but is also trying to hide his attraction to her.

I liked the steamy and fast pace of this story. Tannon and Mina were a cute couple. I won't say much more about their relationship because I don't want to spoil the book.

I am really excited to see what happens next and for the new series, House of Rone. I have been wanting to know more about the cyborgs from their first introduction. I'm also glad that I don't have to let go of this world yet because it's one of my favorites.

DESERT HUNTER
4 stars

It was so much fun to be back in the world of the Galactic Gladiators! Mersi and Bren were introduced several books back and their chemistry was obvious from the start. However, Bren has a secret and he believes it makes him unworthy of love, especially love from someone as sweet and generous as Mersi. I'm a sucker for a hero that needs to be convinced of his worth and Mersi handled Bren so gently. Together these two are unstoppable and the way they look out and care for each other is beautiful! They really are a perfect match because they both know what it's like to lose everything and they both need someone who loves them unconditionally.

ALIEN HUNTER
4 stars

When people aren't placing bets on Gladiators at the Kor Magna arena, they're gambling away at the Dark Nebula Casino. And it's Tannon's job as head of security to keep everyone safe - and Tannon takes that job very seriously. He's tough and a total Alpha male but I loved seeing his more vulnerable side as he fell for Mina. As for Mina, I loved her character too; she doesn't need as much protection as it appears and I loved watching the mystery of her past unfold. Alien Hunter also acts as a bridge between the original Galactic Gladiators series and the new House of Rone series coming soon and I can't wait!

I love love love the Kor Magna gladiators and the women who've captured their hearts. It turns out I also love the desert caravaners and sexy security guys. YEAH, I DO!

Bren and Mersi are FABULOUS. Bren is hiding what he considers a big secret. Mersi just wants the big guy no matter what. Throw in a dirty critter, a girl who needs help, and a bunch of desert bad guys and you have a recipe for a good, dangerous time. And a sexy one, because, you know, a determined woman always gets her man.

Mina and Tannon have that simmering tension thing going for them. Mina's sweet and attracted to the head security man. Tannon's trying to pretend he doesn't have a thing for the sexy server, but is having problems keeping his distance. GOOD STUFF.

Christmas with the gladiators! LOL. Those big, gruff gladiators trying to figure out human celebrations is a HOOT.

Like I said, I adore the gladiators and all the other characters who find love and acceptance on that distance world.

❤👍👍❤

These two novellas and the Christmas short story were absolutely fabulous. Mersi and Bren's story was so well done. I also really enjoyed the Christmas story and they way it showed the true meaning of the holiday that is about family, friends and love. My favorite was Mina and Tannon's story though. It sets up the anticipation for the House of Rone series beautifully.

UPDATE: I just reread HUNTER, Galactic Gladiators and my previous comments hold. I again enjoyed this duo-novella pack & short story. The stories are fast moving, creative and (very) steamy diversions during these uncertain times.

ORIGINAL POST:
4.5 Satisfied Stars. I enjoyed the settings, characters, and storylines in these 2 novellas.
(1= dnf/What was that?; 2= Nope, not for me; 3= Yes, it was Ok; 4= I LIKED THIS A LOT; 5= It was great!)

The 2 novellas below are standalone Sci-fi Romance adventures. Both can easily be read alone, but I highly recommend the 11 books that precede DESERT HUNTER as well. Together, the books create a story arc that begins with book 1 and ends with book 11. Book 12, DESERT HUNTER, serves to complete the GALACTIC GLADIATOR series and lead into the next connecting series the GLADIATOR HOUSE OF RONE. I’ve already read that series. It’s another action-packed, page-turning adventure laced with romance, new Bad Guys, cyborg Heroes, and many Sweet HEAs. I found the DESERT HUNTER stories enjoyable - connecting the 2 series on the Gladiator Planet of Carthago. And the short Bonus Story included was sweet. Readers who like sweet & spicy Space Adventures, Enjoy!

1)DESERT HUNTER is the first of 2 novellas in GALACTIC HUNTER, the 12th and final book in the GALACTIC GLADIATORS series by Anna Hackett. A native of Carthago, Mersi Kasparov/FMC was rescued while lost in the desert escaping enslavement at the age of 16. Corsair, the leader of Corsair’s Caravan, found her and allowed her to stay within the sanctuary of his people. Years later, Mersi is now one of Corsair’s top trusted people. Bren Hahn/MMC was with Corsair at the time of Mersi’s rescue. Bren remembers well the day she was rescued - lost, dehydrated, and afraid. Bren was his mid-20’s at the time. He has been casually looking out for Mersi ever since. And although Bren fell in love with Mersi years ago, he keeps that emotion on a tight leash; he believes he must - for a very good reason. So instead, Bren has allowed his attachment to drift into a tight friendship of trust between the three of them - much to the disgust of both Corsair and Mersi (for whom the attraction is mutual). Mersi wants more. Must she find it with someone else?

2)A GALACTIC GLADIATOR’S CHRISTMAS is a 1st Christmas celebration (Bonus Short Story) including each of the rescued earth survivor characters from the previous GALACTIC GLADIATORS titles. Each of the earthlings were rescued from either slavers, imprisonment, fighting pits, the horrors of the desert, and/or sadistic aliens. Now they all live new lives far from Earth on the planet Carthago, truly safe and loved by an alien, gladiator, or a cyborg who treasures them.

3)ALIEN HUNTER is the second novella in GALACTIC HUNTER. A woman who calls herself Mina Lan’Gar/FMC is a cocktail server in Rillian’s Dark Nebula Casino, located in the District, the glitzy gambling and shopping center that draws tourists when they come to the city of Kor Magna to see the gladiators fight in the arena on the planet Carthago. Mina was employed a month ago, offering no background information other than she’d come in from the desert. Once an Alien Hunter assassin, now Dark Nebula’s Head of Security, Gannon GI/MMC hired Mina. But he feels something is off about her and watches her closely. Gannon understands and accepts secrets others keep close as long as they don’t interfere with his job, or put his employer and those he cares about at risk. What are Mina’s secrets? Gannon wonders just what is she hiding, and why?

I loved this series but certain aspects may cause certain readers to look elsewhere.

READERS CAUTIONS -
PROFANITY - Yes. Rare strong language used.
VIOLENCE - PG-13. Unsuccessful Kidnappings and brief mention of past abductions (not included in stories).
SEXUAL SITUATIONS - Yes. On-scene intimacy occurs between 2 main characters in both stories. The scenes could be skipped over, but some readers may prefer to look elsewhere.

IMO, not appropriate for YA readers.

Just like Rogue, one of the previous books in the Galactic Gladiators series, Hunter is really two books in one. Except that this time it’s more like two and a smidgen books in one.

The first novella included in Hunter is Desert Hunter, which was previously released in Pets in Space 3. As the Pets in Space anthologies tend to only be available for a limited time, now that the time is up Hunter is the only place to read Desert Hunter, a marvelous story about two members of Corsair’s caravan who love each other but haven’t managed to find their way towards each other.

In this dangerous trek across a shifting planet, they finally bond – with the help of a very, very shaggy dog. Who isn’t always a dog, but who does love them both with all of its heart.

I was lucky enough to receive a preview copy of Desert Hunter and reviewed it as part of the run up to Pets in Space 3. It’s a terrific shaggy dog story, a lovely introduction to the world of the Galactic Gladiators, and a great friends-into-lovers combined with hero-feels-unworthy romance.

At the time, I gave it a B+, and I’ll stand by that rating.

The second novella in Hunter is Alien Hunter, which serves as a kind of “bridge” story between the Galactic Gladiators series and its followup House of Rone series, both set on the far-across-the-universe world of Carthago, amidst the gladiatorial arenas of its capital-city-cum-tourist-mecca, Kor Magna.

And just like one of the earlier stories in the Galactic Gladiators series, Guardian, Alien Hunter is set among the glittering lights of Kor Magna’s premier casinos, Dark Nebula.

The Dark Nebula Casino, and its owner Rillian, have ties to both the House of Galen and the House of Rone, along with some truly excellent security. Making it the perfect place to host a big party for the allied gladiatorial houses.

But someone wants to breach that excellent security. Probably plenty of someones, as the two houses have made it their business to wipe out the slavers’ illicit fight rings on Carthago while rescuing as many of the prisoners of those slavers as possible. With particular emphasis on rescuing the people that were taken from Earth.

As many of the gladiators have fallen in love with those Terran refugees, they have a vested interest in finding and freeing as many as possible. But these are both Houses of good guys (although not all of them are guys) who have been rescuing people from the slavers for all of their existence.

The romance in Alien Hunter is a bit different, and as usual not so much because of the hero but because of the heroine. Tannon Gi is the head of security for Dark Nebula, and he seems like a humorless monolith pretty much devoted to his job. Of course, there’s plenty of heart under that seemingly impenetrable mask.

Mina Lan’Gar, however, is not what she seems. Not even to herself. On the surface, she seems like a waitress without much education but with a heart of gold. She gives of her own meager salary to help those she works with who are in need.

She thinks that’s all there is to her, a woman from the desert who is hiding from her past. At least, that’s what she thinks until the aforementioned security breach, when she discovers all sorts of hidden talents of the “kicking ass and taking names” variety that she has no idea how she acquired.

Tannon tries to figure her out – and figure out why he can’t help but be attracted to her. When both of their secrets are finally exposed, they discover that they are perfect for each other – and that the secrets that were kept from Mina will help the Gladiators rescue yet more refugees.

There’s a lot packed into Alien Hunter, with enough backstory for new readers to get into this terrific SFR series.

I’m happy to give Alien Hunter another B+

And then there’s that smidgen of a short story, A Galactic Gladiators Christmas. This is a story that I had some series problems with. Not so much the story itself, which is cute and sweet and a great way to see how all the friends from the previous books in the series are doing.

The issue I have is that it’s a Christmas story. Not that I don’t read plenty of Christmas stories, in spite of it very much not being my holiday.

But this is a story set in a future that is far enough from now that Earth has a working space station orbiting Jupiter, with regular shuttle service between Earth and Jupiter. A future that I’d love to see, but based on current technology and current political will probably won’t exist for a century if not two.

To compare it to a different SFnal universe, Star Trek: Enterprise was set in the 22nd century, about 150 years from now. The Star Trek universe by that point was kind of post-religion, quite probably because no one wanted to go there in a world intended for mass appeal. There’s no way to deal with religion without making lots of people angry.

The question I ended up with after reading A Galactic Gladiators Christmas revolved around why Christmas? Or more specifically, why Christmas exclusively? Christmas is far from a universal holiday in the present. Because I’m a librarian, I looked up the numbers. About ⅓ of the current world population is Christian, ¼ is Muslim, ⅙ is unaffiliated and ⅙ is Hindu. Everyone else takes up the rest. Which means that Christmas is far from an Earth-wide holiday, and my personal opinion is that this won’t change in the future. (I tend to believe that religious adherence on Earth in the future will more resemble the Babylon 5 episode The Parliament of Dreams, where the line of representatives of Earth’s many different religions stretches beyond the range of the camera.)

To make a long story short, as this exposition is rapidly reaching the length of the short story it refers to, I found the Xmas story a disruption to my willing suspension of disbelief. I don’t think the population of Earth will give up all religious adherence in 150 or even 250 years. I can’t believe that a space station, which would be a collection of the best and the brightest from the entire planet, would be made up entirely of Christians. Nor do I believe that if a universal winter solstice holiday arises from our many current belief systems, that it will be called Christmas, which is a sacred holiday for a specific religion, regardless of the commercialism that has become attached to it.

In that Xmas party scene, I expected to see some people in the corners who, while more than willing to celebrate their friends’ holiday and/or to celebrate their survival and even their thriving in this new place with friends and family, would have been also sharing their own holiday traditions and reminiscing about their own family celebrations.

My feelings about this story are too conflicted to give it a rating. Your warp speed may definitely vary.

Amazing story about Carthrago, aliens and humans

This book has three stories.

Hunter: Mersi is a alien desert hunter in love with Bren another desert hunter on Corsair's Caravan on the planet Carthago. She escaping from her slave master when
she was 16. They found an alien version of a dog with a message saying "help" and hunt who wrote it. Will they solve the mystery?

A Galatic Gladiators' Christmas: All the human mates want to celebrate Christmas. Their gladiators will do anything for their mates. Even mysterious Christmas?

Alien Hunter: Mina is a server at Dark Nebula Casino. Tannon is theater security chief there. What is there stories? What is the danger to the gladiators and their mates? Who are the major players in this drama?

The characters are unique, different personalities, sexy, and relatable. Each story has a fast paced drama with a twist. These related characters, that were mention in other books in the series, have their unique stories to fill in gaps in the timeliness. The author brings in creative, imagination flair to all her stories and that is why I keep reading books from her. Highly recommended for enjoyment factor.

Hunter

Two novellas in this book. The first one is a sweet story and gives us a new facet of the world - the tainted.

The MMC: "Usually, he found people talked about unimportant things and wasted his time. Actually, he wasn’t a huge fan of people in general". The MFC is his perfect match - personable and "...light, and laughter, and goodness".

There is a Christmas story in between the two novellas. This is a common thing for these romances to do. They always occur to me as fluff but that doesn't mean they are not delightful to many readers.

The second novella has some fun parts. The FMC's story doesn't really make sense but if you ignore that, the romance is good. I especially liked the point the author is making about the ridiculous impracticality of short skirts and high heels. At one point, the MMC says, “Someone forgot to finish making your skirt”. And the FMC uses one of her high heels to stab a bad guy.

And now I'm off to the House of Rone.

Hunter...

Galactic Gladiators book 12. Two stories in one fabulous book. A fanfreakingtastic way to end the series. First story is Desert Hunter. Bren and Mersi. They are the right and left hand peeps of Corsair. She has loved him forever but he is hiding a secret so he keeps her at arms length. As the try to save a child from the bad guys, it all comes to a boiling point. Been is like a super alpha alien. Mersi is a badass desert woman. Dramatic, angsty and smexy. Is there more humans out there? The second story is Alien Hunter. Tannon is the head security of Rillian's hotels. Mine works there as well. They have feelings for each other but he has secrets and she can kick ass but doesn't know why or how much of a badass she is. A new enemy appears and everything isn't as it seems. This story is funny, dramatic, angsty, hopeful and sexy.

👍👍👍👍👏👏👏

A great ending to a great series, however, the saga continues on with the ‘The House of Rone’.
Desert Hunter ..MMC Bren and MFC Mersi took ages to get together and the other mates didn’t, so it was like ‘oh ok’🤔. Anyways, still enjoyed their interactions with each other. Storyline engaging, alien dog and lost orphan girl was a nice addition I thought. Enjoyable read.
Gladiator Christmas ..good catch up with all the other mates ..
Alien Hunter ..MMC Tannon, and MFC another couple different in personality but same concerning security and others safety. Storyline awesome with its twist, in one part of the story I thought, ‘that was genius, to put that in’. A brilliant way to open the door to the next series ‘Galatic Gladiators: The House Of Rone’.

This is a well written book that includes lots of action and stories of love for two couples. First, as part of the desert caravan, Mersi has had her sites on Bren for a long time but he fights it. He thinks he is not worthy of her but she proves him wrong when they go on a mission together and they find love. Then in the second story, Tannon, the head of security at the Dark Nebula, keeps his eye on a new waitress named Mina. When he sees her fight for the first time, he is impressed. They work together to stop the evil from hurting the mates from the House of Galen and House of Rone at a special Christmas party. Thrown in as a bonus, is the Christmas party. Love this series!

These two stories were pretty good, and honestly I enjoyed them more than i though i would. Deser hunter expands the universe and gives us ANGST and Alien Hunter is a little bit more grumpy-sunshine with alien mixed in there but still good. I just though that Alien Hunter suffered from it being a shorter story, and although I liked the series I don't think I can read anymore about it (even if we are at the babies, which I love)

You get Bren & Mersi’s story, Tannon’s & Mina and a Christmas story. My favs were Tannon and Mina’s story and the Christmas one.

It was so funny to get the reactions of all the rough tough gladiators and other alien spouses to the Earth women’s throwing a Christmas party with all the traditions. Especially funny was their response to mistletoe - one said I don’t get the point, I can kiss her whenever I want.

There were actually 3 stories in this book. The overall arc to move the emphasis from the house of Gaelyn to the house of Rone. I am enjoying the adventure and romace in the series. The 3 stories in this book were fun and exciting.

Great three stories

Bren and Mersi are two desert people who are on a mission to find a missing person. Then there is a Christmas party put on by the human females. And last is Tannon the stoic head of security and Mina. All good reads so get started. Enjoy

Me gusto la historia de Merci y Bren, aunque estaba muy corta.
La otra historia de Mina, no me gusto tanto aunque si quisiera saber como es que la hicieron pasar por no humana
Es una buena historia como link para el spinoff
