A hundred years ago, evil scientists spliced human genes with those of animals, creating a genetic mutation passed on through the generations. Hated because of their differences, these Ge-Mis live on the fringes of society where they scrounge and scrape to get by.

Nevada is half Ge-Mi and hides that fact behind baggy clothes and by keeping distance between himself and

Wow--what a nice surprise! I've been burned so many times with shifter stories--far too many of them are formulaic and lazily written. But I'm also obsessed with the genre so I keep breaking down and buying new books with juicy blurbs, only to end up yelling obscenities at my kindle when the inevitable disappointment comes.

(Vaguely spoilerish)
Not so here: Ge-Mi was lovely. It's such an odd story, so it's a little hard to describe why it worked for me. Except for the blurb, which warns of the
This is an entertaining novella. It's set in the future. After some experimentation with animals, now there is a new species, the Ge-mi, who are a mix of human and animals and have characteristics of both.
The concept was somehow original to me, since I don't usually read books about shifters.
The plot was nice and well developed for the length of the story. I liked Nevada a lot and I liked how sweet Taylor could be with him. That said, I felt that Taylor's character needed a little more

This book is, in a word, adorable. Nevada and Taylor might not be a purfect couple, but they come close! When interacting with one another, the canine and feline inspirations are evident. Nevada prefers to watch from a height while Taylor wants an immediate confrontation. Nevada is more reserved, more cautious, and the few times hes forced to fight, he does so in a very feline manner.

At first glance and at first read this book may seem light and shallow, but the world building involved is
If I'd realized this wasn't complete (part one) I probably would have continued to put this off. Long waits in between books just makes you forget what you've already read the majority of the time for me. This was cute but in the end it is leaving a lot of unfinished business. Makes me wonder if it really will be concluded or not, especially since I'm reading this 2 years after the fact and the next part still isn't out..

In the end that makes me disappointed cus I wanted to see where Taylor and

I may be a bit biased but I love cats so this book was just perfect to me. I love the cat details given to Nevada and his interactions with all his cats. His interactions with Taylor were cute and the book just wasn't long enough for all the fluff I wanted. There were some serious business going on in the background regarding the views people had on Ge-Mi but I'm glad it didn't stifle the atmosphere of the book into a very serious, heavy book but rather, was surprisingly light.

Its hard for me to describe my feelings for this book. When I first started it, I expected a traditional little shifter story, a nice easy read. While this was an easy read, it wasnt any kind of traditional shifter story. For one, its about a world where Ge-Mi genetically mutated people are pretty much abhorred. If you are one, youre not treated as an equal so your options are either trying to hide what you are or living with people thinking youre lower

At first, I wasn't sure what to make of the story. I found Nevada interesting, but the Prologue was a little confusing, introducing all of these strange terms and ideas that weren't fully explained. Then it skipped to Chapter 1 and took four pages to tell us what time difference

The author has crafted an interesting world for this series. I kept imagining being there, walking down the street and bumping into Ge-Mi, people with both human and animal traits. Possibly kids with colored, feathered heads, women with scales or men spouting otter ears. Pretty cool, right?

This world is presented through Donovan's eyes, the cutest young man with snow leopard features. He'd thought he was safe, living a quite life, until it was all literally blown away by hyena Ge-Mis. His

Ignore the cover, this one is amazing. Not quite shifters but a modified species, Nevada has spent his life hiding what he is. I liked this one from the cat given as a bribe. Nevada is sweet, smart and a cat rescuer. His match is good too, Taylor the ge-mi that doesnt respect doors or boundaries. Really hope theres a second part. ...more

Nice one

With this book author Mell Eight has created a promising reality.

The plight of the Ge-Mi people adds a fun translation to the civil rights issues of various subsets of humanity... And does so without the ham fisted allegories used by lesser authors

I can't wait for the next book!! I love cats, and Nevada's relationship with Taylor is so promising! The next book couldn't come sooner!

Loved this book. The setting and story were written well. I have a dog but because of this book, now I love cats too. Looking forward as to what will happen to the story of Nevada and Taylor. Thanks Mell for this great book!

It was a cute, short read, and I was glad to see the (Part One) addition to the title, because it definitely feels like the first part of the story, and not a complete narrative. I liked it, but the fact that it felt like a prologue made me feel it lacked a proper conclusion? Even knowing that there is going to be a sequel, there is something missing to make me love it.

Taking it slow

I really enjoyed this book and the whole new world that it opened up. The concept was interesting and the characters were engaging, keeping me eager to read what would happen next.

Nevada is a snow leopard Ge-Mi, a half human from experiments over a century past. Despite the time there are many prejudices against his kind and he lives in secret, quietly working at a cafe while pretending to be fully human. This quiet existence is shattered when a pack of hyena ge-mis bomb a nearby

I will definitely look for a second part. It's a story about a dystopian society where people with split genes and animal characteristics are considered second-class citizens. Nevada is one of them and finding honest job for himself is not so easy. Hiding the fact that he has cat ears and a tail even more so. He's trying to live a peacefull life however the ancestry lands him in one trouble after the other.

It was light story with open ending, a really nice surprise.

Rating: 4 stars This was a really cute story. I just loved Nevada and his many cats. I thought both Nevada and Taylor made a very cute couple. The romance in this story is definitely a slow burn and if you go into this book expecting it to be highly erotic you'll be disappointed. I actually liked that the two MCs didn't jump in the sack the minute they met. It was refreshing. Also, as the title implies this story ends with a big To Be Continued. That didn't bother me either, as I was expecting ...more

Okay, so this is truly where the saying Dont judge a book by its cover comes in handy. I for one, thought looking at the cover: WTF?!? However, if the author/publisher was going for eye-catching, then they did do their job. Because I did notice it and I actually stopped and read the blurb, which peaked my interest. So, the moral of this story is to give this book a chance. Oh, and dont judge the book by the artwork on its cover.

So, now I can say this is a good and interesting start to a new

I really enjoyed the start of this new series from Mell Eight, mostly because Nevada is adorable. The futuristic, dystopian world with its independent towns and cities and the friction between humans and Ge-Mis was nicely done, providing plenty of scope for more from this series, but it was Nevada who made this book for me.

Part human, part snow leopard, Nevada is quiet and shy and used to hiding. Hes also king of cats, finding them everywhere he goes, nursing those that need it back to

Cute sci-fi fluffy book. Not very in depth but still a fun quick read. Would like some more back story but maybe in book two.

I received this book from Net Galley and as usual if Mell has written it then I want to read it!
This book follows Nevada a snow leopard Ge-Mi who has moved to a new city after his mother passes away.
He's been taught to keep himself hidden due to peoples fear of his genetic mutation. He's sweet, diligent and hard working and somehow manages to attract the attention of Taylor a wolf Ge-Mi grandson of the local Lord who controls the area.
This is a great start to a series and I'm looking forward to

[I received an ARC of this novella from Netgalley]

First impressions:
From the blurb, I was expecting a heated romance that might play on a enemies-to-lovers trope amidst a sci-fi, urban fantasy setting. I did not think much of the cover other than it was interesting to look at, but it really was the blurb that snagged my attention.
Next, I noticed when I opened my ARC on my Kindle app that this was a novella, which is not an immediate strike in my book, but it did give me pause because there are a

I was thinking of giving this another star for the world building and creativity in this story, but honestly, it fell so short of my expectations and hopes in the relationship department, and everything else, that I don't want to.

I was expecting slow-burn, lots of cautious indecision and a slow merging of Nevada's cat nature with Taylor's wolf nature. I mean, Nevada has been living in fear for his entire life, hiding his ge-mi nature for years, and extremely weary and scared of Taylor's

When Mell Eight was in high school she wrote a short story for an English class. The assignment was for no more than five pages, yet she had turned in ten and the story wasn't completed. Her teacher was impressed, but writing stories for fun was her main source of procrastination from homework; handing in an assignment that actually asked her to write fiction was too good to pass up.
