The Coin Slot Chronicles #3

Arcade and the Fiery Metal Tester

Rate this book
In Arcade and the Fiery Metal Tester, New York City is experiencing the hottest summer on record. Eleven-year-old Arcade Livingston can’t keep his cool after receiving this suspicious warning atop the Empire State Building: “Things will heat up in all areas to test your mettle.”

In no time flat, Arcade is tested like never before to use the Triple T token’s powerful ways to outsmart a bully, find a place for his best friend to live, and spy on some pesky villains from the 1900s. Meanwhile, sister Zoe thinks controlling the token is nothing but a path to disaster.

One thing’s for sure, the token continues its flashing and pulsing. And elevator doors continue to transport Arcade, Zoe, and their friends to meet different people in strange locations—people who will challenge them, teach them, and inspire them to grow in patience and compassion.

And just as a trip through a fiery furnace is necessary to purify gold, the token leads Arcade through superheated situations to test the purity of his heart.

My name is Doug, and my best friend Arcade has this awesome magical necklace. I'm hoping he can use it to help me with my problems. I've been living with my great-grandmother for years, but now she's been placed in an assisted living facility. Of course, I can't live by myself, and I don't know any relatives around here that might take me in. The brownstone is going on the market, but the realtor will have trouble showing it to potential buyers. I'm keeping Arcade's flamingo in the bathroom, and it's making quite a mess. Well, the flamingo actually came from the Beijing Zoo, but that's because of Arcade's necklace. It takes him on adventures to unbelievable places. But, like I said, I just hope he can use it now to help me find a new home.

I recommend you read the first two books in the series to fully understand the story's progression. The second book introduced the possibility that the token could transport Arcade to the past or future, and this book sees him learning to control it. The token's history is explored, and it's testing Arcade to see if he's worthy of being its owner. The book has a spiritual quality and promotes positive messages. Arcade's parents include Bible quotations in their notes and include prayer in dealing with difficult times and decisions. Despite some minor teasing, Arcade and his older sister have a special bond. Zoe always supports her brother and helps him stay safe physically and mentally. It's refreshing to read a series that focuses on good things in the world without accentuating the bad. A subplot involves the disappearance of the family dog that adds an amusing twist to the book. It's like playing hide and seek with the hider moving around somewhere, and sometime, in history. Overall, I can easily recommend this book, and series, for your enjoyment.

Adventures through time and around the world continue for eleven-year-old Arcade, his sister, and his friends, thanks to the magical Triple T Token. Only now Arcade is learning to control the token! Or maybe he isn't. Either way, his journey is about to heat up to test his mettle in Arcade and the Fiery Metal Tester by author Rashad Jennings.

Well! I'm three books into The Coin Slot Chronicles middle grade ChristFic fantasy series. I wasn't sure what to expect with this one, but when it comes to the Triple T Token, you pretty much just have to hang on and go with it.

Here Arcade and the gang have laughter, some tears, some high-flying action (I mean, incredibly high at times), and as always, lessons to be learned along the way.

Oh—and books to be read, of course. Arcade is a library nerd.

Admittedly, as with the first two novels in this series, there were places in this one where the story didn't hold my interest that well. But I'm attached to the characters now, and the little pieces to the plot do come together while leaving room for more later. Plus some stuff with the time travel in this one is even crazier than usual, in a clever way.

I'm looking forward to the release of Book Four.

This is third in the series but the first I read, so it did take me a bit to totally understand and buy into the premise of the story. But once I did, this was a fun middle grade adventure, with a lot of middle grade humor. Faith is an assumed part of the lives of the characters without being the focus. My one concern: some very serious issues were skimmed over. For example, Doug, Arcade's best friend, appears to have been living on his own (at age 11 and a half) for two weeks when the story begins, even though there's a social worker involved because his caretaker grandma has ended up in a care institution. While Arcade's parents step in and give Doug a place to stay, no one seems overly concerned about how this was allowed to happen to begin with. Still, the basic story premise is fun; an enjoyable summer read.

Read as part of the series or as a stand-alone novel! Arcade and the Fiery Metal Tester is the third book in the humorous and imaginative Coin Slot Chronicles series by New York Times bestselling author, former NFL running back, and Dancing with the Stars champion Rashad Jennings.

Great for reluctant readers
Black and white illustrations included

My Review:

Arcade and Zoe are at it again, in this third of The Coin Slot Chronicles. A great middle schooler book full of suspense and dram. Arcade seems to always have his hand in something. This time is no different and of course, Zoe his little sister comes along for the ride.

Quote from the book, " And just as a trip through a fiery furnace is necessary to purify gold, the token leads Arcade through super-heated situations to test the purity of his heart." What a good reminder of that from the bible and its in this addition to the series.

These books are great as a series or you can read them as a stand alone. Each one brings you up to date on what is happening so there's no need to struggle to keep up.

A great read and very action packed!

Rashad Jennings third book in the Coin Slot Chronicles, Arcade and the Fiery Tester is another winner. I purchased this series for our grandson and read them so we could discuss together. How surprising that I enjoyed them as well.

Arcade and his sister, Zoe and their unique friends discover the importance of good character. The theme of book 3, is testing Arcade’s mettle. And that magical coin takes Arcade on some serious adventures.

Great book! Some mysteries solved, but new ones emerge! Can’t wait to read Book 4.

I felt like the cliff hanger ending from the last was ignored and there was a lot of setup for this ending, but I did enjoy parts of it.

Thanks NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. So this was actually quite enjoyable, not at all what I expected. I actually went back to read the first 2 in the series as well. So I love that it centers around an oddball, a kid who doesn't necessarily fit in to the societal norms, I also love that the kid is pretty proud to be a christian and uses his faith to sift through the chaos that is life! The adventure he and his friends get into are pretty wild as well. I really did enjoy this, and it was interesting that I had a patron who asked about a "good christian series for children" and BOOM, I had this treasure lined up and waiting! I can't wait to see what he does next!

I really struggle to find books that will snag and keep his attention, and this series fits the bill! A great balance of intrigue and fun that is perfect for his 10 years of age. We look forward to all the books in the series, and thanks for sending an ARC our way for review, Zondervan!

I have been listening to this series on the Hoopla app. Book three of this series is just as excellent as the first two. I found it thoroughly entertaining. So much so that I bought this book for my son also. I had already purchased book 1.

In this story, Arcade deals with a series of difficulties that test his character. As you may know from the first two stories, Arcade is a smart, a total bookworm, and an all-around friendly kid. In this story, he and his sister have their usual back-to-school conference with their parents, where they set goals of things they'd like to accomplish in the upcoming year.

This year, the parents decide to do things differently because of the family's recent move to New York from Virginia. Zoe, Arcade's older sister, decides she needs to work on patience, and Arcade's goal is to be compassionate. As usual, Arcade, Zoe, and their friends make several amazing adventures using the golden elevators, compliments of Arcade's travel token.

These books are lovely. Each contains valuable life lessons, not only for children but also for adults. And as a Christian, I love the Biblical references woven throughout the story. They are front and center without being overhanded. This mom adores them! Enjoy!
