Most people don’t think about the day they’ll die. They coast through life, blissfully unaware of how their time is ticking away. I wasn’t like most people. I welcomed death, wanted her to take me away from the prison I called life, but she refused. I tried twice only to survive. And then, when I thought I had nothing left it came.
A reason to live.
Rex was a small, unexpected ray of light my world of darkness that blossomed into a beam of sunshine. I thought, maybe this was why Death didn’t take me. Maybe she knew that if I held on a little longer things would turn around. But the third time Death came to my door wasn’t by choice. Someone else brought her, and I fear this time she might take me.
Rex
Being the son of a country star sucks. My parents are never around, I move every year or so, and I have no real friends. Everyone around me has an agenda. Everyone except Piper Lovelace. I can’t get that girl to notice me. Trust me I’ve tried. Thankfully, fate stepped in and gave me the break I needed. I’ve got her attention, now I need her to give me a chance.
Bailey B is an up and coming New Adult author. She lives in Lehigh Acres Florida with her husband, twin girls, and two fur babies. She enjoys (but doesn't get to take part in because of her crazy daughters) the simple things like Disney+ binge watching, Netflix romcoms, reading and sleeping. She reads two to three books a week and thinks if narwhal's are real animals then unicorns might be too.
I enjoyed this book quite a bit. It is a young adult romance with quite a bit of angst. It wasn’t a steamy novel by any means. The heroine, Piper Lovelace, is a senior in high school who had a bad start in life. Her biological mother is a lifelong prostitute and an addict. Piper was sent to live in a foster home when she was about eight years old. The foster family consisted of Mama “T” and twin boys that were her age, Logan and Cooper Harris.
Piper was again sent to live with her biological mother at some point but ended up back with the Harris family after a traumatic incident occurred. Now Piper can’t bear to be touched, she suffers from anxiety attacks, she also has terrible nightmares so she rarely sleeps. Cooper has always been her best friend and has stood up for her, but she is bullied in school by everyone else because she is there on scholarship while everyone else is rich. She is also known as the school slut.
Piper had tried to kill herself three times in the past, and she wants to die but feels the universe is against her because every Time she tried she was found in time. Then she gets to know Rex Montgomery. Rex is the hottest guy in school, son of a famous country singer, he is over six feet tall, has dark hair, plays hockey well enough to be to be drafted into the minor leagues, and every girl in school wants him.
Rex has issues of his own and though he has hooked up with a lot of girls for one night only, he has never been interested in anyone like he is interested in Piper. He is shy and tongue tied when he first starts talking to her and is afraid of rejection. It is romantic and sweet how Rex and Piper fall in love, and it is a clean romance between them. Though there is violence and sexual assault.
The writing is good, all the characters are fully fleshed out and important to the storylines. I liked Logan and Cooper, the “Harris twins”. They are both described as hot and many of the girls in school want them. Logan seems to have a little darkness in him so I can’t wait for ILUIHU, which is next. And I bet there will also be a Cooper book following that.
I voluntarily read & reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Two broken souls, each one having had either emotional or traumatic experience, met in their senior year of high school and shared a beautiful connection. Rex and Piper were each other’s saviour while their lives were dealt a bad hand. Although it was very well written and developed, I found their HEA ending very premature. I would like to read the stories of the secondary characters.
Rex is the son of a music celebrity and has lived a privileged life. Some people may assume that money equates to happiness but it couldn’t be further from the truth. What every child needs is a parent that loves them and is there for them. Rex has never really felt that from either of his parents. If it wasn’t for his nanny he would have had very little happiness and affection growing up.
Rex is now in his final year of high school and the new guy that everyone is trying to align with. He is good looking, wealthy and throws amazing parties at his decked out house. He looks like he has it all but he lives alone and has no one he can really count on. There is one person he is keen to get to know, a beautiful girl at his new school called Piper.
Piper has a reputation that precedes her. She can thank her mother for that. Well actually, calling the lady that gave birth to her a ‘mother’ is not quite accurate. That would imply that she cares for her daughter but unfortunately she only cares for herself. As a result, Piper has been in foster care several times and the last time she was in the same house as her mother she had a very close encounter with someone that could have turned out worse than it did.
Rex’s interest in Piper is confusing for her at first. Hasn’t he heard all the rumours about her? There are so many girls preening for his attention but for some reason his sole focus is on her. She likes the way he makes her feel when she is around him too. He doesn’t pay any attention to the rumours, he prefers to make up his own mind about people.
‘No one pays attention to me. I’m not pretty enough, or rich enough. I’m like a shadow in the dark, merely existing until someone brighter comes into the room, and everyone’s brighter than me.’
Piper is feeling things for Rex she didn’t expect to. She has big things going on in the background that some of the people closest don’t even know about. When I say ‘big things’ I mean life threatening, get out of dodge things. Piper knows that her time with Rex is limited but she can’t bring herself to tell him that what they have is only temporary. Enjoying this small moment in time with someone who makes her feel seen and wanted supersedes anything else for now.
‘I absolutely love seeing her like this. Alive, it’s like I was brought into her life to remind her what it’s like to live. I’m saving her and she doesn’t even know it.’
When the shite does eventually hit the fan, it does not go the way Piper had planned, putting her in a vulnerable position she could never have imagined. This may be a romance story but it is also laced with suspense and enough plot lines to keep me turning each page. This was my first time reading a story from this author and I’m glad I took the leap.
Too much going on in this first book in the Broken Love Series. It was hard to put this one down. Piper had too much in her plate at her young age. Traumatized for her past events, living in a foster home, pursued by a guy. But a spark of hope came into view when she met Rex. He is the hot guy, son of a country music star, living on his own due to the absence of his parents. They are two broken souls that will involve you in your anguish and sweet story.
Beautifully Broken was a good start for a debut novel. Is dark and has some trigger topics. I liked the plot a lot and the characters. But I found that the book needs editing and every chapter ended abruptly. She has the makings of a writer. Only needs to polish it up.
My thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a free ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. This YA novel started off quite strongly - and melodramatically! In the Prologue, young Piper is shot, sacrificing her life for that of the love of her life, Rex Montgomery.
Now flash back to six weeks before this alarming incident: Piper's life was "a hot mess": she was known as the school slut because her mother was a prostitute and drug addict. When she was 8 years old, Piper was put in foster care with the Harris family for a few happy years, but for some reason she is sent back to live with her mother again, who promptly sells her daughter's virginity to her own Pimp, Gerald. Piper has to fight off the Pimp, runs away, and spends her days and nights riding a bus in order to stay warm and off the streets. But she still attends high school. Mrs. Harris welcomes Piper back to her home. Piper is now 18 years old and somehow got a scholarship to attend an exclusive high school for her senior year. There were so many incomprehensible holes like this in this story that should have been caught with more careful editing. For example, at one point, Piper goes back to her bio-mother's apartment to take or steal the child support check that her mother is still getting from social services. We never find out what Piper intended to do with this check and why social services is still paying this subsidy to her mother, even though Piper is now 18 and is no longer in her mother's custody.
Here are a few more examples of the many baffling events in this story: Big spoiler alert: During one scene, Piper's friend Banes is shot in the side by the Pimp's henchmen, who are out looking for Piper. (Gerard wants revenge and has put an exorbitant price on her head.) Rex and Piper kindly take Banes to the hospital and Rex offers to pay his medical bills. Banes is patched up and released the same day (quick recovery!), and there is no mention of the doctors at the emergency clinic reporting the gunshot wound, as is mandatory for almost every hospital in North America.
And here is something else that perplexed me: when Piper woke up from her medically induced coma (after being shot the morning after prom night), Rex promptly proposed to Piper. She says yes, and they almost immediately adjourn to the chapel and get married. Hello? Marriage License, anyone? Also, there is a three-day waiting period in Florida - unless you've taken the premarital course. But here is the most confusing part for me: on the last page, as Rex and Piper leave their high school graduation ceremony, he assures her he will take care of her from here on in, and he hopes she chooses to live with him. She tearfully asks him: "You want me to move in with you?" Umm, don't married people usually live together?!
Now, don't get me wrong: I suspect many people will enjoy this action-packed story and feel very sorry for poor down-trodden, misunderstood Piper. The author can certainly write a decent sentence and her paragraphs have good flow. The first 8 or 9 chapters started off strongly, and kept me interested. But after a while, things got a bit off track and the author started falling back on all the old YA tropes. The ending seemed a bit rushed, and, frankly, it just confused me. I don't want to discourage this author from writing more novels. I suspect she will get better with time, and for a debut novel, this was actually a pretty decent effort. I rate it a 3.5 out of 5, rounded down to 3 because of that odd ending.
This book had some interesting relationships that I liked reading about- for me, especially Piper and her relationships with Cooper, Logan and Bane. Although, one of the relationships took a cliche and, I believe, unnecessary turn. On the other hand, I really didn't have much interest in the relationship between Piper and Rex. I do think they were cute, but I didn't feel that *something special* from them, and so I didn't find myself actively rooting for them. *However*, I definitely was rooting for Piper and Rex individually- Piper, especially. The things she went through and the way she was living... I can't even imagine. All in all, this was a pretty quick read, as I wanted to see how the story turned out, but more of an 'okay' read than anything else.
Thanks to netgalley for the ARC, provided in exchange for an honest review.
Piper is many things but the school slut everyone labeled her as is not one of them. For years she's been teased and tormented for being her mother's daughter. She only has a few more months and then she can leave this part of her life behind... or can she?
Rex has lived his life as the son of a famous country star. Never wanting for anything except the love and acceptance of his parents, only to be dumped off with the nanny. He's never known love until he meets Piper.
Now Rex and Piper are dodging danger while discovering their new relationship. Pipers past keeps lurking around every corner and it seems Rex is determined to protect Piper at every turn.
I absolutely loved this book. The storyline and characters are amazing and unique. What did bug me was that this book needs editing. It was really distracting to have the wrong words in spots or extra words. One part in particular actually mixed up the names. I wanted to give this book 5 stars and normally for these type of errors I'd drop it to a 2 or 3 but this book gripped me like no other. Kudos to this author on her first book and I hope to see many more.
All the feels! Aww this was a beautiful sweet ya romance that gave me all the feels. Piper has a rough childhood and recent trauma that makes her wary of others and especially wary of love. But when she meets Rex sparks fly and she finally starts to open up...but not all happy endings come easy. My heart was torn out as I read this book...and I was on the edge of my seat until the end. There’s definitely a touch of romantic suspense to this story that keeps you turning the pages. And I loved Rex...from the moment we first met him. Definitely one of the sweetest male characters I’ve read in a long time. He’s independent, sweet, loyal and utterly swoonworthy. I was equally intrigued by the other characters, torn between my heart breaking for them and excited for what might lie ahead for them. The ending definitely leaves things open for more books in this world...and I’m signing up for all future books by Bailey! Go get this one...you won’t be disappointed.
I really enjoyed the story of Piper and Rex. Broken girl/boy fixing each other. I would have liked a little back story on Rex and how it was Piper caught his attention. What he thought of her prior to Rex saving her. You mentioned he watched her and didnt believe the rumors but we didnt get to hear that story from Rex. This story captured my attention from the beginning.
This is a sweet love story between a traumatized girl and a boy abandoned by his family. Both broken in different ways but looking to find someone to heal them. I really appreciated the way Bailey handled Pipers trauma, not making it seem like someone could just "get over" if they find the right person. She doesn't just brush it under the rug like its something inconsequential. While this book has triggers for people who have been sexually assaulted it really deals with this topic in a more realistic way. Great story that kept me turning pages. I love Rex and Pipe and would like to learn more about Bane.
This book is about two broken people finding love and peace. The whole book was addictive and I couldn't stop reading. I just finished it in one go. The book handles some heavy topics in a good way. It's mature and doesn't look away. I really loved it until the ending. It felt so rushed and forced. It felt childest and really threw me off the story. It went from a solid 4,5 stars back to 3. Still highly enjoyable, but I wouldn't reread it.
Pipers story kept me hooked from the first paragraph! The hurt and trauma she works through, and the adventure that brings her to a better place is such an amazing tale to dive into. I highly recommend this book, and will be reading more from this author.
This is one of those books that breaks you down, brings you back up and keeps you there. There was so much manipulation happening that made it so enticing. This couple was really destined to be together even after all that had happened between them. I would not wish that journey on anyone but if it ended up exactly the way it was supposed to, with being a couple at the end, the journey was well worth it.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I received a copy of this book on NetGalley for my honest opinion and thoughts about this book. My only problem with this book is, there wasn't enough pages I just wanted it to keep going and was left with wanting more at the end. In this book it starts with a young girl called Piper and is in her final year of High School. Piper isn't just your typical teenager she has had a troubled past and is now playing havoc with her present. Having nightmares and not sleeping is just the start of it. When Piper was a little girl she lived with her mother who is a drug addict and prostitute. Therefore Piper went into care with the Harris family who has the house, the money and a set of twins called Logan and Cooper. This was the first time Piper felt like she belonged somewhere and felt part of a family. Then Piper moved back with her mum and the worst night of her life occurred and everything changed from there.
Until she met Rex at school who saved her from a boy forcing himself onto her and that was the start of Pipers heart beginning to warm and her anxiety fading away. Rex has had his eye on Piper for a long time and he sees his chance to pursue his feeling and see where the relationship would go. But he needed to be ready for the storm that surrounded Piper and her life and what happened previously. I wont go into two much detail about the story as it will give away the whole book and I want you to feel how I felt when reading it.
The characters are so likeable and you start to feel part of the story and getting to know each persons mannerisms and characteristics. I enjoyed the story and where it ended at the end, but I was left wanting more and hopefully book 2 can provide me that when it comes out in May. The only thing I was confused about at the beginning where the Author was introducing Piper and I was trying to figure out if she lived at home or with the Harris'. But after a couple of chapters I understood the situation and got back into the flow of the story.
This was such a nice and loveable story and once I had time to read I didn't want to put it down. I would recommend this book if you want a quick read but with a brilliant story line with two people healing and helping each other overcome their worries and to feel appreciated again.
This Author (Bailey B.) is new to writing romance stories but the one I have just read was just the right amount of perfect and you need to go look at her books and give her a chance. As when starting as a new author every reader and every review counts!
The prologue instantly sucked me in and I couldn’t get enough of this book! I found myself completely obsessed with these characters and rooting for them to find themselves and each other. This is definitely a must-read especially for anyone looking for a book with all the feels and a bit of suspense along the way!
My heart was with Piper and Rex throughout this book. They were both broken in different ways and this book was the perfect story of their path to love. Piper has been through it ALL and she’s such an amazing heroine. I’ve found myself having similar thoughts and emotions as Piper and it was a relief to see her overcome the emotional scars and barriers holding her back. And with Piper’s past comes a bit of suspense. There are so many things that made her the character she is and they all impact her story. The good, the bad, and in this case the unfortunate. Her story will leave you on edge and praying to the all mightly book lords that she overcomes it all.
And y’all Rex...he’s definitely one of a kind! Even though he comes from a family who didn’t show him love and compassion, he still learned it and was the perfect person to show Piper just how amazing it could be. Or does he? You’ll have to read and find out because it’s so worth it! He’s so worth it!
Along with Piper and Rex, all of the supporting characters are just as amazing and developed. From Piper’s brothers, Logan and Cooper, to Rex’s nanny, Gretchen, they were all so amazing and supportive. I’m not sure if any of the supporting characters will get their own books, but I sure do hope so! I loved this book dearly and would love even more! It is the story of two beautifully broken people finding a love so strong it was able to mend their broken pieces together as one.
Oh, My Heart! Beautifully Broken is an amazing read! Bailey is a new author and I'm so very happy to have been given the chance to read and review this book! Beautifully Broken is an emotionally riveting read, it will consume you from start to finish! I was so engrossed, I read till two am and woke up at six to finish it because I just couldn't stop thinking about it! I loved everything about this book! It was raw and real, you just know going into this book it's going to destroy you in the best way. I was not disappointed, the characters are fantastic and you easily get swept into piper's life. I'm an angst wh#re and this book was the EVERYTHING I've been craving! Piper stole my heart, she's tough and sincere, you want to help her, to be her friend. Rex is the ultimate true love, they were everything the other had been missing. This book has some rough content, it's terrifying and heart-pounding. Piper's situation is the stuff of nightmares and it's coming. What would you do for the person you love, the person who breathed life back into you? Beautifully Broken was a hauntingly beautiful read, one that will stay with you. I'm so in love with these characters and I can't wait for their stories! Cooper has a special place in my heart, he just melts me. Logan suckered me bad, he's my favorite kind of character. Bane is also one of those characters that you crush on, and you know he's got a heck of a story. Jenni is interesting, she's going to give someone all kinds of h*ll. I look forward to more from Bailey. She has the ability to break us and make us feel, a truly beautiful talent! I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Every now and then I try to read a debut of a new author. The blurb of this book caught my attention and I was glad to meet the writing of Bailey B. Beautifully Broken is a gripping book about two young people, both with issues, who find peace and purpose in one another. Piper has grown up at the wrong side of the tracks. Growing up in several foster homes and being part time raised by her addictive biological mother, hasn't shown Piper exactly how life could be. Therefore, she has already tried to kill herself several times. She has anxiety attacks and she doesn't want someone holding her. She goes to school with two brothers (the Harris twins), with whom she has lived several years at a foster home. While Logan steers clear of her, Cooper is always at her side, to defend her from the bullies at school. Rex is the son of a rock star. Everyone always wants to be his friend and girls fan themselves over him. However, Rex never knows if people like him for him or whether they just want to be friends with someone famous. So, his friendships are shallow and he feels all alone sometimes. He always feels drawn to Piper, because she looks alone as well. When they are pushed together by accident, they start talking. And realize they have a lot in common. So, while there friendship grows, Piper's world starts to come crashing in. Can she learn to rely on someone else? Or will she push Rex away? And will Rex realize that the other side of tracks can be very dangerous? Find out for yourself in this wonderful debut. Four out of five stars from me and awaiting the next part in this series. Well done Bailey and a special thank you to Netgalley for providing the arc.
Beautifully Broken is a story that will tug at your heart and have you wanting to hug Piper and Rex. This is a young adult story that even older adults will enjoy (I did). Piper has a life no one wants or should ever experience. Thankfully she has a foster family (Mama T and the Harris twins, Logan and Cooper) who aids her in all aspects to help pull her through some dark times. It doesn't help that we get a twist on a twin, shame on you! (all I will say to avoid a spoiler). Met Rex, all people dream of having his life, but being rich and famous has its' drawbacks (just use Rex as the perfect example). Both Rex and Piper are broken in their own ways, but fate brings them together when death has other plans and why they are still here. Piper is close with Cooper, but good old Cooper is not taking well to this bond between Piper/Rex. Love where this goes, as it is sad, but eye opening as well! Logan was no saint and he hides the true him really well. The darkness in him shall prevail and I cannot wait to get his story (ILUIHU). This story just goes to show you that all broken people have a beautiful soul and purpose in life. It may not be an easy life, but the lesson that comes with it is what makes you that much stronger. This is the authors debut book and you would think she has been writing for years. I look forward to reading more by this author.
Piper and Rex are two broken souls that find true unconditional love within each other. But Rex for me OMGGG, he stole my heart!! What a sweetheart; if I could just hug him and tell him what a good guy he is and that although his parents are blahhhhh, he is perfect and that piper is soo lucky to have him and that everything will be okay! Phew....I just love him. With that being said, I was worry about starting this book because I read to get away from real life issues. But Am happy to say I enjoyed the book. My issues with the story are few, it did have a-lot of typos, it didn’t have a epilogue, although it had a satisfying ending I still felt I needed a little more. Also, because it has a second book coming out in May the author just randomly threw out hints about a problem with a particular character to jump start it. Until I realize what was happing I felt I missed something or my kindle had a meltdown. Other then that I am content.
Bailey B. is a new author to me and I am so happy she found me!
This book was so heartbreakingly beautiful. She had me hook from the beginning. Piper, oh man this poor girl. Having the life she had and all she had to grow up with, just broke my heart. But how she handled everything and everyone made me proud of her. She could have had the pity me card or the I hate the world and everyone in it. Yes she had that attitudes little but I have very surprised with her attitude on life.
Rex had to grow on me a little lol. But once he did, I adored him. To learn more of his past and childhood helped me love him. Then to see how he was with Piper just made me swoon.
I am looking forward to more from Bailey and her next book!!
5️⃣🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 🔥(once you read this you will understand this rating more. I don’t want to give away anything but I also don’t want this to make you not want to read it. It has a reason behind it, read the book and you will see hehe.) 💯recommendation
Language: R (169+ swears, 73+ "f"); Mature Content: R; Violence: PG13+ I was mostly enjoying the story, but the crude language and sexual content was just too much, and I ended up stopping about half through. Besides that content, I found myself confused by the timeline and other inconsistencies, and I often felt gypped by the chapter endings that cut off scenes without resolving what was going on. The mature content rating is for mentions of prostitution and sex, underage substance abuse, sexual harassment and abuse, sexual touching, and rape. The violence rating is for mentions of suicide, child abuse, and gun use.
Piper cant be touched and she never told anyone other than her friend Bane why. Not even her foster brothers. Cooper and Logan are twins but shes closest with Cooper whereas Logan is the quieter one. But one day Rex the new guys at school saved her from on the guys trying to pay her for "extracurricular activities" and he protects her. From there their relationship builds because she finds she can bare his touch! Rex may be the hot hockey player but hes broken inside. He was raised by his nanny and no matter how much he tried to get his parents attention he never got it. Hes afraid Piper wouldn't want him either. This book was a beautifully told YA romance with a HEA although very rocky getting there.
This is the story of two broken HS Seniors who find each other. Piper and Rex are both damaged in different ways, but are able to heal together. Their relationship is sweet and I’m glad they both got a happy ever after!
Thank you to Netgalley for a free copy in exchange for an honest review!
Rex & Piper feel real to me. Their story isn’t forced, there’s no storm of unnecessary bullshit keeping them apart for dumb reasons. Thank the lord! Instead, Beautifully Broken has a very real, very dangerous storm (that’s all I’ll say). Bailey perfectly pens the tension and uncertainty of falling in love. Rex & Piper share this wholesome, fragile, insecure love that we don’t often experience in YA/NA. And I love to see it.
Oh my goodness! This is a first book from this author and I loved it more than I thought! If you are looking for a YA with emotional twists that will leave your heart breaking but have a swoon worthy love story to boot? This book is for you! I fell in love with Piper and felt her pain just like I loved Rex and felt his as well! I would love to see a book on the twins and Bane's story as well! There is a second story and cannot wait to see who it is about!
The story is very emotional rollercoaster. Two young adult in the senior year of high school. Two broken souls. Very traumatic past push them together to be saviours to each other. Recommended for all ages, but keep Kleenex handy.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
What an emotional ride this book was! My heart broke for Piper and all that she had to endure. One thing after another kept stealing her happiness. Then comes Rex Montgomery...*swooooon*. He is quite perfect, even though he does have troubles of his own. Just on the opposite side of the spectrum than Piper. I do like their relationship throughout the book. I found Cooper & Logan a nice addition to the story, although a bit strange at times. But it looks like we’ll be getting a book for Logan. Maybe Cooper will get his own too. 😉
Loss of a star...this was mainly due to the grammatical errors seen while reading the book. I’m not a super ornery person when it comes to reviewing books, and most books have a couple errors. But there were quite a few through the course of the book.
But for the most part, I enjoyed reading this one!
