Re-read 2023 - This is the final major arc of the series, and it's still fantastic to read. There's multiple moments of "holy shit" followed by "Oh god...people are going to die." And that's pretty much the last 8 volumes in a nutshell. So excited to read through these again.

Original Review - Demon Slayer just ramps up their shit because holy fuck it is going DOWN.

This right here is the Endgame. Right before we get into it we get to see the training and it's a decent ending to show how far the boys have come. BUT then Muzan walks right up to Kagaya and is ready to murderer the leader of all the Demon Slayer Corp. Is it a trap? Well fuck it doesn't matter because Muzan shows why and how powerful he is here as the entire Demon Slayer corp unleashes their attacks on him. Then we get a duel between a sick demon and Kanao, and my god, this fight is glorious.

It ends on a hell of a cliffhanger but goddamn it the death count is coming and I can feel it. The fights, the motives, the pure relentlessness of the demons. It all comes down to this. We in it baby.

5 out of 5.

TW// murder (including children)

The start of the end. I've seen a lot of spoilers, so as soon as I saw who was being grouped with who for the fight, I started to tear up in anticipation. I'm not ready for all of these characters that I love to die in such tragic ways.

Truthfully one of the greatest manga series ever, but be prepared to have your heart ripped to shreds if you want to read it.

"Furthermore, Muzan... you have stepped on the tiger's tail over and over and invited the dragon's wrath. They would have remained asleep, but you woke them up. Their eyes are fixed upon you and they will not let you escape." [Ubuyashiki]

Demon Slayer's Volume 16 covers the last episode of the anime and with that my knowledge of the story ends. Since I haven't seen the movie, from now on I have no idea what happens. It's both exciting and worrying, but that's something for the other volumes ☺️

This volume consist of three big moments: Gyomei's backstory, the meeting of good and evil, and Infinity Castle's first events.

"No matter how righteous people usually are, they reveal their true selves in times of disaster." [Gyomei]

Out of all the Hashiras that we have met, Gyomei and Obanai were the only ones who's backstories had yet to be revealed. Volume 16 uses the demon slayers Hashira training to show us Gyomei's past. Without any further spoilers, as expected, it was a bloody one (it really seems that Mitsuri's the only one who hasn't experienced any loss). Because of that Gyomei's having trust issues, and Tanjiro had been on receiving end of it until he had proven himself.

I really like Gyomei's character. He seems like a gentle giant, you know? A gentle giant who cries a lot (without much of a reason sometimes), but he's incredibly strong, both physically and mentally. It's easy to be in awe of him, and Tanjiro quickly became one of his followers (honestly, it kind of looks like Tanjiro's a fan of everybody and everybody - with the exceptions of Sanemi and Obanai, I guess - is a fan of Tanjiro 😂). I also like how he took Genya under his wing, despite knowing that the boy lacks the ability to use the special demon slayer breathing (I wonder if he also knows that Sanemi's against Genya being a demon slayer 🤔).

"So you're here. Nice to meet you, Muzan Kibutsuji."
"Well, you sure look horrible, Ubuyashiki."

This legendary meeting between the representatives of the good and evil in the Demon Slayer world looked much more impressive in the anime than the manga. In the anime Muzan's entrance looked majestic, while in the manga it was like I blinked and he was suddenly in front of the master, like he didn't walk in, but teleported there 😂

Anyways, I liked how visually different the good and the evil looked in these scenes. Muzan had a strong and intimidating presence, looking all handsome and healthy, while Ubuyashiki looked weak, with one foot over the death's door, having his body completely taken over by his sickness. I also see an irony in the fact that Ubuyashiki spend all of his life chasing after Muzan, not even knowing how he looked like, and the moment of their meeting he couldn't see him and couldn't fight him (or so it seemed), due to his sickness taking over. But he proved that even a man without a sight and mobility can find a way to fight back. He just has to be incredibly clever and have the courage to make the biggest sacrifice a man can ever think of. If it was worthy or not, it's for you all to judge.

"It's Muzan!! Muzan Kibutsuji!!" [Gyomei]

The full blown desperation and distress shown in the actions and on the faces of all the Hashiras said enough about their relationship with their master. It looked like they lost something precious to them and that sight broke my heart, especially Sanemi's tears hit me very deeply. I also have to say that until now I haven't realized that none of the characters had ever seen Muzan, with the exception of Tanjiro, so Gyomei had to let them all know who they will have to face. I can't imagine the rollercoaster of emotions that these kids had felt (also, how is it possible that nobody informed Tengen about everything? He's no longer a demon slayer, that's true, but he was still one of Ubuyashiki's children, and he cared about the fate of his father, didn't he?). The situation escalated even more when all the demon slayers, while trying to kill their biggest enemy, had suddenly lost the ground under their feet.

FROM HERE NOW THE INFINITY CASTLE ARC STARTS, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!!

"I am the founder of the eternal paradise faith. My role is to be happy with all the faithful." [Douma]

After the way this particular Upper Moon rank demon, Douma, recruited the demon siblings, I knew that he's nothing like any of the prevous demons that we encountered. Through the little Douma flashback, this volume proved that I was right. All the previous demons had no memories of their human lives and these human lives had tragic pasts. They become demons under Muzan's manipulative actions. Douma on the other hand was a manipulator himself, both as a human and as a demon, not regretting anything that he had ever done, enjoying his life to the fullest, convinced that he's helping people while eating them alive. It's disgusting and wrong, and I hated how delighted and happy he looked while fighting Shinobu. I am not a Shinobu fan, but even I am very worried for her. She's a skilled Hashira, but will her skills be enough to get rid of someone as strong as Douma? I hope so, but we will see how things will escalate!

From now on, I have no idea what will happen, and I am ready for the Infinity Castle ride! (I feel like I will cry a lot) Fingers crossed that I will (somehow) survive it! 😉

P.S. Some things I need to talk about (look out for the SPOILERS from now on, please):

~ who cursed Ubuyashiki's clan? Was it Heaven itself, because nothing's explained and it bothers me when I don't know something.
~ Gyomei saying that his training consisted of three SIMPLE things while his students were DYING made me laugh so hard 😂
~ Genya thanking Tanjiro for his help with Sanemi and helping him with his training was so sweet and precious. I love how helpful Tanjiro is to others and how everybody is helpful to him in return ☺️
~ Tanjiro was INSANE for jumping between Giyuu and Sanemi, did he have a death wish?! 😂
~ Why did Ubuyashiki killed himself AND his family? Was he afraid for their safety after he died or what? Were all the family members okay with their deaths, just like that?? It wasn't explained at all! Also, didn't Ubuyashiki have five children instead of two?? 🤨
~ Poor Tamayo 😔
~ I love that Tanjiro and Giyuu teamed up in the Infinity Castle! ☺️

Not a lot happened in this volume. Fortunately the Hashira training arc ended now. Though a huge part of this volume was about this story arc so I can't say I liked it a lot.

Characters with their backstory revealed are Himejima, Shinobu and Douma. They were all alright, I guess I liked Douma's the least and Himejima's the most. That's probably 'cause I had a similar experience like Himejima so I understand on a deeper level what he means. Even though Shinobu's backstory is the most common one to give a character I still liked Douma's the least 'cause his motivations don't make sense. Not for me at least after I read his backstory.

This volume also starts with Himejima's training which wasn't anyhow interesting for me 'cause the task was mainly about moving a giant rock. Was waiting the whole time to just read his backstory honestly.

Muzan also made another appearance but it was short-lived so I wasn't very excited about it. He also just repeated what his next plans are so there wasn't any new information.

The relationship between Tomioka and Shinazugawa was (if I remember correctly) never elaborated after this incident, which makes me feel uninterested about it.

It also didn't feel that tense, perhaps 'cause I already read it before and knew that most moments were fleeting anyway.

The training finished, I really can’t believe that the final battle is upon us. I mean, the reasons were all there, sure, but in most other mangas I’d have assumed we’d be overwhelmed with side-quests and/or new level-ups.

But nope, we’re getting right to the meat of it. Bloody, bloody meat.

An absolutely fantastic volume.

Several members of the Kisatsutai continue their training, honing their skills to new heights.

Meanwhile, Muzan finally confronts Ubuyashiki, triggering an event that calls all demon slayers to action.

Filled with tension and exhilarating action, this volume keeps you on the edge of your seat.

In the 16th Volume of Kimetsu No Yaiba, the training finally ends with some funny moments as the author slowly builds up tension and anticipation of what's to come.
And in an instant, everything turns to chaos as the end nears. Masterfully crafted.

(I KNOW I KNOW I'M SORRY. ANOTHER ABSURDLY LONG ONE. BUT THIS ONE'S GREAT, I PROMISE. PLUS, YOU ALL ARE GOOD READERS SOOOOO)

"No matter what anyone says, I respect you, Tanjiro Kamado.
I once raised orphans at a temple. They had no families, but they helped each other, and lived harmoniously like a family. I wanted to continue living that way. But one night, a child who broke the rules by not returning before dark... encountered a demon. To save himself, he said he would feed me and the eight children at the temple to the demon. In the area where we lived, the fear of demons ran deep, so we lit a wisteria-flower incense burner each night. That boy extinguished the burner... and invited the demon inside.
Four children were killed immediately. I tried to protect the remaining four, but three of them wouldn't listen to me. at the time, we didn't have much food, so I was weak. I was faint of heart and had never even shouted. And I suppose they felt... that a blind adult couldn't save them. The only one who listened to me was Sayo, the youngest. She hid alone behind me. And the other three children ran off. The demon slit their throats in the dark and they died. But no matter what, I wanted to spare Sayo, so I fought. The feeling of punching a living thing was like hell. I can never forget my disgust. For the first time, I swung my fists with my full might-with a power frightening even to me. If a demon had never attacked, I would never have known my own strength. I continued punching and smashing the demon's head until dawn. I lost much that night. I was hurt, and risked my life to protect Sayo... but this is what she said to the people who came to help. 'That man is a monster! Everyone... He... killed everyone!' She must have been confused from the horror. She was only four. Which is understandable. Children are like that. Nonetheless, I at least wanted some gratitude. I wanted her to thank me for fighting for her. Those words alone would have saved me. But children are only ever concerned with themselves. The demon's corpse turned to dust and disappeared, leaving only the children's bodies. The authorities imprisoned me for their murder. If the master had not helped me, I would have been executed. After that, I became a deeply distrustful person. And of course, I didn't even believe in you. No matter how righteous people usually are, they reveal their true selves in time of disaster. But you did not run away. You did not look away. You did not lie. You were straightforward and resolute. It sounds simple, but not many people are like that. I have seen many people with the eyes of my heart, so if I say this, it's true. Everyone is uneasy about the future. From now on, I will help you so you do not take the wrong path. Your training with me is complete. Good job seeing it through."

The final battle is here and I am absolutely terrified for my babies. TERRIFIED. Please Gotouge, I can’t handle any more of my babies dying. There is a death already in this volume, but it was inevitable so I’m ok. Also, where are Zenitsu and Nezuko?

Genya is my sweet angry baby. He now belongs in the same group as mom baby Tanjiro, crybaby Zenitsu, angry baby Inosuke, smol baby Mui, and awkward baby Giyuu.
