A Joyfully Jay review.

4.25 stars

Under His Skin was a sweet and angsty romance, with plenty of political and scientific overlay. It’s one of those books that’s going to appeal to a lot of readers. Ben and Lennon are equally compelling characters and each stands independently of the other as a creation. It’s easy to like Lennon, even when he’s being stubborn and short-sighted. He genuinely believes in what he’s trying to achieve and, as a reader, I loved his dedication and refusal to compromise h

I have a few mixed feelings about this book. I liked Lennon and Ben, I liked many of the secondary characters, I liked the action and pacing of the book, but I just didn’t buy into the ineptitude and mindless devotion to the State that the NSA agents in this book had. Very little about the bureaucracy of the NSA in this book was believable and it sort of tainted the whole thing for me.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Lennon is a nanotech scientist that has invented a humane bullet that every nation would like to have. Ben is the spy that broke Lennon’s heart by doing a disappearing act over a decade ago while he was undercover using the name Greg. The safety of Lennon’s invention and Lennon’s safety are given to Ben as his new assignment. Intrigue, murder, treason and love are entwined in this story to gi

Genius Lennon has always used his brain to do everything. It got him away from parents who were disgusted by his being gay. It got him through college. He put it to good use starting his nano-tech company. And, when his boyfriend disappeared he used it to try and find him. In this matter his brain failed him, and morning the loss, Lennon went on with his life. Now he’s been kidnapped, unsuccessfully, and his lost lover is back in the form of a secret government agent sent to save his life.

I received this book as part of an ARC review. I liked the character of Lennon. Lennon only wants to help people with his products. He designs nanobots. He comes with a new type of bullet that paralyzes and heals who it would hit. The NSA has been watching over him for years as they consider him an asset to the country. When Lennon finds out he is not happy. Not even his old boyfriend, Gary, who disappeared then years ago coming back as Ben, a NSA agent, makes him accept the NSA agents command. ...more

More than just a draping for male-male sex, this brilliant novel is a full blown intrigue involving technology and espionage. With a handful of principal characters, the author cleverly illuminates their strengths and foibles as the reader observes a reblossoming love. Descriptions of Cambridge and New York are apt and precise. A number of edge-of-seat scenes brought the blood pressure up. Truly brilliant and strongly recommended.
