About the author

A native of Springfield, Massachusetts, John C. Reilly, Jr. graduated from Mount St. Mary’s University in 1955 with a degree in history. After service in the United States Navy, he received a master’s degree in library science from Catholic University. He joined the Naval Historical Center in 1969 and became head of its ship history branch in the 1980s, serving in that capacity until his retirement in 2001.
