A piebald mare. Her chosen human. A bond with the power to change everything.
The human race has all but destroyed itself and those who remain know that they must avoid repeating the mistakes of their ancestors. But it’s extremely difficult. Without horses, it would be impossible.

Amarilla is one of those chosen by a horse as a Bond-Partner. She looks forward to a lifetime of learning from her horse and of passing on the mare’s wisdom to those seeking help. But then she discovers that she is the one for whom the horses have all been waiting. The one who can help them in return.

In order to give the horses the help they need, Amarilla will have to achieve that which has never been attempted before. Only her beloved mare can give her the motivation, the courage and the strength to believe she can succeed. If she does, a new era will dawn for horses and humans alike...

In his forward to Lord Of The Rings, Tolkien speaks of applicability and allegory.
I believe, non-horseperson and horseperson alike will find much applicability in The Horses Know.
This is a story about love, courage, compassion, as well as horses. Set in a future world with a touch of reincarnation The Horses Know caused me to laugh, cry (good tears) and reflect, many times while reading it.
It is rare to find ‘real’ horses in fiction but, for the most part, they are here in this book. As are some simple truths overlooked by most authors. Such as: Bonding takes time, even where there is a powerful connection, and with horses grooming is a big part of the process.
There are some beautiful scenes and moving moments, but for me personally the scene where Amarilla meets her bond partner – a beautiful blue eyed piebald mare – for the first time, resonates most:

‘She lifted her head to look at me with those beautiful blue eyes
“You are here.”
The words appeared in my head and sounded like my own thoughts, except I knew I hadn’t formed them.’

: ‘”You are here”’ That is just so horse! So horse! I laughed when I first read it. Then I cried, because I remembered a grey mare, and a reunion, and her look of sureness with her simple statement ‘You are here.’
If you have heard a horse’s thoughts in your head, you will know, and if you haven’t this description is spot on! –
‘The words appeared in my head and sounded like my own thoughts, except I knew I hadn’t formed them.’
If you don’t usually read horse stories, I think you will find The Horses Know rewarding, as above noted, there is much in this enjoyable story that may be found ‘applicable’ and thought provoking.

The Horses Know review

As a horse lover all my life and an equestrian for the last fifty years, I was intrigued by the premise of this book. However, as I read on, I found it to be a great read for teenage girls but not very thought provoking for a senior adult. The horsemanship espoused in the pages made me wonder if the author had ever trained a horse. I have ridden and shown American Saddlebreds and the idea that a horse just needs a bridle to enable him to work off his back end is novice thinking. A lot of ground work goes into teaching a horse to shift his weight back and use his hind quarters. Never have I heard of a horse that fell forward because he could not support the weight of his rider.

First, thanks to NetGalley, author Lynn Mann, and publisher Post Hypnotic Press for free access to this audiobook.

I wasn’t sure about this book, as I like horses, but the premise is a bit outside my normal reading. In the end, I liked it. It’s a cute YA book set in a somewhat dystopian future. Some of the book was a bit too empathic / holistic in vibe for me. It started as a YA adventure with a female main character who didn’t fit in with everyone, but you could tell she would come into her own one day. I liked the idea of the Skills, and the Horse Bonded.

But then things got more esoteric. The main catch phrase is “All is as it should be”, which makes everything seem somewhat pointless. I’m not a big fan of existential crisis, which is the feel I got from the second half of this book. By the end, this 17(?) year old girl is infinitely wise and all-knowing, which made it less interesting to me.

Still, it’s a cute story and great for young readers who love horses and like the idea of communicating with and bonding with horses. It’s just not for me, so I do not plan to read the rest of the series.

Amazing

I came across this book by accident my sister was recommended this book because she is horse obsessed and she thought I would like it too so I gave it a go . This book is incredible bthe author knows what she is talking about with horses.
There has been many a time I wished I know what an animal was thinking my sister's horses remind me of the horses in the book.
I would like to think when Amerilla decided bshe was going to be horse bonded it was what we call getting the horse bug...
But it also points out that humans never learn from our mistakes because we make them time and time again.
A definite must for people who love horses

I was not sure about this book? It did not make sense to me and I think it should of been in the Children's Section, they may have enjoyed it more. I found it boring and lacking in a story., I think there was a lot of imagination and not really my scene. Others may enjoy this book but I cannot put it into my Goodshelves rating. Having read it, I can at least say I tried.

Not what I expected, but good.

I chose this book because the horse on the cover looks a lot like mine. I purchased all three in the trilogy. I thought it was going to be a story about horses but it's more than that. It's kind of like a science fiction. It took a bit of time before I could wrap my mind around the story. It's probably written for someone younger than I am. I'm 70. If you like horses and Sci-fi, then this is the book for you. It is well written.

Great book

I loved this book from start to finish. It's well written and such an unusual concept. Made a welcome change from the usual horse literature. Don't be put off by the science fiction type label. If you love horses you will love this book

This is a delightful story of a partially enlightened world, which still has some way to go and an important link is that between horses and their 'bonded' humans. There is hardly any reference to sci-fi scenarios, the future is just used to set the scene for the delicious fantasy that we can learn much more from horses than we think. After the initial introduction and scene setting, much of the book is devoted to that relationship and horse riders will see many parallels between our attempts to train horses and the knowledge that we must take their feelings into account. Charming, it will be enjoyable for both children and adults.

I loved this book

A fantastic tale about the human-horse bond, human potential, love and trusting life. The story was gripping, when I had to put the book down to get on with other stuff I couldn't wait to get back to it. Lots of deep insights about how we could live life in a much more joyful and fulfilling way.

Thank you NetGalley & Post Hypnotic Press for access to the digital Audiobook of The Horses Know. As a life long equestrian who’s dreamed of owning their own horse since childhood this one hits all the marks. Major themes: equestrian, new world, fantasy, magic. This title is filled with whimsy and touches of surreal fantasy. There is new perspective brought to the table about soul bonds and what that could look like between people and horses. It’s truly fantastic, I can’t wait to finish the trilogy. If you love horses and fantasy I can promise this one should be on your TBR! The narration is wonderful and took me right back to the happy place I discovered when reading Emily Wildes Encyclopedia of Faeries. I loved everything about it; I want to be horsebonded too!

A Truly Wpnderfulbook!

I chose 5 stars because this book taught me more than any other book. The characters are unique and relatable. The locations so well described, I feel as though I've actually walked with the characters. I recommend this book to any horse lover and anyone who need guidance in how to move beyond the limitations they are struggling against.

Thanks, NetGalley for the ARC. This was definitely a unique story. Female lead characters is a 16 yo and the setting is most likely the United States in the future. Our world destroyed itself by giving into fear via war and isolation and now there are communities of “the new” who live like our original settlers. Except there’s weird magic/“skills” that people can perform. And there are some people that have special connections with horses and they leave their families to spend their time with their horse, together helping people to live in harmony with one another. And then they throw in reincarnation. So, very unique. There’s a lot going on in this book and I’d argue it’s just a little too much. It was an entertaining book to listen to and it was very clean, which I do appreciate.

What a great read! When a friend who’d read a review copy of my own equine-themed book said I was one of the “horse-bonded” and then said that my book reminded her of Lynn Mann’s Horse Trilogy, I was curious and bought the whole trio. Wow, Ms. Mann’s writing style and character developments are off the charts. How humans & horses related to each other will leave readers mesmerized.

Must Read

Love this book! The story of the relationship between horse and human captured you from the beginning. I didn't want to put the book down. Although fantasy in nature of the story, it was real enough to capture my full attention. It also has made me more aware of my horse's mannerisms and thought processes confining there are reasons for his actions that I may not understand.

The Horses Know was very different from what I usually read. It took me a while to get into it, but I ended up enjoying it!
The story about our protagonist and Infinity and all the different characters they meet was interesting enough on its own, but adding the Woeful storyline really made it come together.

Marvelous

I don't know how to explain this story. I do t know hat category would best describe it. I only know it is beautiful. Even with all the self doubt, evil, hurt and death it still leaves you with a feeling of love and peace. I guess only the horses know. Great job. Thank you.

Despite the reviews, I just could not read this book: I love horses, but all the 'fiction' stuff completely turned me off. I really tried because I hate not finishing a book, but this one just did not make it

Wonderful and fascinating

Bought this series by accident and so glad I did. Knowledge of dressage is not necessary, but helpful. YA fantasy with humans bonded to horses and typical humanity make for a more than interesting read. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
