Sister of the Chosen One was born out of a simple question, uttered on a warm summer day: what if Harry Potter had a sibling? How much would that suck?

From there, this book was crafted using so many unique elements: the often volatile and close relationship that exists between sisters, the pressure of being "The Chosen One", a modern school for those with "Exceptional" gifts, the wonder of first love and the devastation of your first toxic relationship. We wanted to talk about jealously and crus

This was an enjoyable, fast-paced read. The plot was a little cliched at times but it's a pretty easy, fun book to like in general.

Was I the only one imagining this world as the Incredibles? The Exceptionals had a lot of similarities to Supers and certain talents (superpowers) run in the family!

Sister of The Chosen One was definitely a spin on the whole "Harry Potter Chosen One" trope. There are some callbacks to the superhero genre (Gifted students in a school= X-Men). There was even a scene t

My Thoughts:
Magic, volatile and close sisterhood, first love, determination, finding your own identity, and monsters. Colleen Oakes and Erin Armknecht have created an impressively rich world for all those that still want more Hogwarts.

Magic, adventure, mystery, sisterhood, and romance combine in this epic teen books. One must prove why she is the chosen one and the other live under that shadow sort of. Through the pages, we get both POVs and see how they learn to be own

2020 will be known as the year of the Erin. This book comes out in the year that my sister, Erin, overcame Covid-19 and this is the year that Erin Armknecht (and Colleen Oakes) published this book. I challenge all Erins to triumph before New Year’s Eve.

I had a little bit of trepidation about reading a book about sisters having spent most of my year holding my breath and hoping everything will be all right with my own or watching her struggle through her recovery. I really didn’t need to traipse

The first thing I noticed was how beautiful the cover is! I mean look at that cute and colourful cover! Second, I love the premise of this story. Who doesn’t love an underdog story?

As I read the book, it has an interesting twist on the overly used “The Chosen One” trope. But instead of throwing a bad light on the assumed “Chosen One,” the authors actually put in both perspectives. To me, this was a delightful story about discovering oneself, sisterhood, and friendship. Through Valora’s and Grier

This book is the beautiful story of two sisters. It not only shows real and human characters, who make mistakes, and fight, and grieve. The fantasy elements are intriguing, their abilities remind me of those of the X-men. Overall, it is a very good book, that made me cheer and boo the same character along the book. If you like fantasy, action, betrayals and broken families, this book is an excellent read.

I loved this a lot. 4.5 stars rounded up to a 5. If Buffy and Dawn were twin sisters and went to magic school. The chapters flip flop between POVs of the sisters and the voice are very distinct. I made a lot of faces reading this because good writing does that to me. The plot is exciting, twists were great, and the sisterly bond made me cry.

Great book, I loved this story about two sisters and the magic and the prophecy! Really great read!
I had fun with many aspects of this book. I always enjoy books about sisters, especially twins, and the authors did a great job of building that relationship. Plus, Oakes and Armknecht created an adorable love interest for Grier in Leo. I loved his earnest devotion to Grier and their cute flirty moments. However, I did feel that the beginning of the book was a little slow, and it took too long to get to the conflict. Also, I would have liked more world-building. Grier and Valora live in a world ...more

I received a digital copy of this book for a blog tour in exchange for an honest review.

I was drawn to this book by the cover, but the synopsis also sounded interesting. I'm glad that I gave this a read because it was wonderful. The authors blended action without taking away from character development. I think that many readers will be able to relate to the main characters. Their struggles were real and it added so much to this story. This was a fast read that had me hooked from the beginning.

I devoured this book in a day. It had just the right balance of action, authentic emotion, and humor. It clearly sets up a premise yet it never felt like I knew what was going to happen next. Lots of heart and I would highly recommend.

Admittedly, I started out with a bias because I know one of the authors, but I honestly did dig this book. A fun read that transports you into a fantasy world with just enough sass, humor, and romance to balance it all out. Definitely recommend for that much needed escape from every day life!

I received an early copy of this, and I can’t wait for its release! My official review:

“Action-packed, empowering, and comic-book vivid, SISTER OF THE CHOSEN ONE showcases the power of sisterhood and of finding yourself when the world has already defined you. Prepare to cheer for these strong and incredible young women.”

Being a hero is tough.

So is being a hero’s sister.

Valora and Grier Rigmore have a tenuous relationship; Valora is the chosen one, and Grier is her sister who can only create petty portals. But, with the threat of Erys on the rise, Valora is faced with the constant hurdle of her self-doubt, while Grier begins exploring her talents beyond measure. Can the two sisters come together to fight this evil? Or will the Chosen One and her Sister fail to protect the world?

This was a good peek at what it can be like to be related to a Chosen One, but it kinda fell a little flat for me. The twists were broadcasted early on and I usually never pick up on clues. These were so obvious, I was just waiting for the reveal. The biggest let down was Grier. She was so awful and did not care one wit about her sister. Maybe I’m just more drawn to Valora because as the oldest child, I had a lot of expectations and responsibilities that my younger sibling didn’t have. My siblin ...more

I was sold on this book since I heard it compared to "Harry Potter meets Mindy Kaling." 10 seconds later and I'd pre-ordered it. But what really got me hooked was the sister story. As a younger (chubbier, less successful) sister to an older (blonde-haired, beautiful gifted and talented, bad ass) sister, I was here for a story that dealt with that experience of being the overlooked sister - with monsters and magic, of course. I definitely got that, as well as a heaping dose of how it feels on the ...more

I am neither a fan of Y.A. nor superhero stuff, but what I loved about this book is that you don't have to be into either to enjoy it fully. It's a great, human story of two sisters -- one of whom just happens to be the Chosen One in a world turned horribly dangerous. As the author explained, "Wouldn't it suck be Harry Potter's sister?" Reading this book, you get great insight into that, but also insight into how much it would suck to be Harry. It's funny and insightful and the kind of easy, bre ...more

Final, a book that is awesome and does not go on for eight more books!

I really liked the readability of this book - and the sappiness at the end of the book. It was very refreshing to read a whole book and not wait for a sequel to continue the story. I recommend this book to anyone who has sisters and likes fantasy.

I am a sucker for coming-of-age fantasy stories, so I went into Sister of the Chosen One with high expectations, and it did not disappoint. A review on the insert describes it as "Harry Potter meets Mindy Kaling," and it is spot-on. I can't decide which hooked me more - the thrilling story and vivid characters, or the biting wit. I hope to see much more from these two authors. ...more

I really enjoyed this book. It was a nice escape to read about fictional monsters vs the real life heavy monsters of 2020. It was light with plentiful humor, but also had lots of heart. The characters of the sisters are wonderfully developed, and you really feel like you know the sisters by the end. I found the alternating perspectives a fun and effective way to read the story.
