A must-read for anyone seriously interested in socio-cultural traditions, morals and values, as well daily life (, which by the way undoubtedly helps one make sense of today's China).
From 1960s to 2011, this book has been re-published for various times, and it really worths reading.
The book is very much focused on the law and society part. It doesn't get too deep and boring with legal part, but it shows different layers of traditional Chinese society, from race or status of people to marriage and funerals. A lot of examples are given throughout every dynasties to illustrate a concrete picture of the traditional Chinese society.
I especially enjoyed reading the part "Black Magic". Usually in books in this topic do not contain an entire chapter about the sorcery and sorcery related legal action and judgments. With various instances, it makes the materials easier to understand even for western readers.
