王老师借用丸山真男“执拗的低音”这一说法，探讨谭嗣同、王国维、刘咸炘思想中不为人注意，或者说被主流论述忽略的方面，最后落脚在史家的时代关怀与研究的现实意义上。该书既是一些精彩思想史个案研究的汇集，也蕴含着作者对历史研究的思考，同时对年轻人也有着方法论上的启发。

历史的书写，应与当时之人同等境界。对“低音”之关注，恰恰是历史之叙事最可贵处。我们不能总是站在“即将胜利的人”的角度认识历史。
