本书所集的四篇文字，有一个共同之点，就是都是论英国人的。最前的一篇和后面的三篇在体裁上很不调和，但本书既是论英国人的，《英国历史上的外族入侵》一文的目的在叙述英国人的来历，所以编入本书，并放在第一篇地位。第二篇《英人·法人·西班牙人》并不是一篇独立的论文，它是根据著者读Salvador De Madariaga所著Englishmen,Frenchmen,Spaniards一书所作的笔记写成的；笔记还是在伦敦时候记的。第四篇《中国人与英国人》是著者写完《英国采风录》一书以后写成的，这篇文字叙述著者多年以来关于中国社会的种种感想。
