"Art and Religion through the ages
Jan. 28-June 1, the Catholic Cultural Heritage Center of the Archdiocese of New Orleans will host the Exhibition of the Vatican Mosaic Studio at the Old Ursuline Convent. This is the first comprehensive exhibition of artwork from the Vatican Mosaic Studio, and it’s a beautiful celebration of history, art and religion; New Orleans is its only stop!
Throughout the duration of the exhibit, 37 mosaics will be displayed, representing an art form that dates back as far as the 15th century. The exhibit, which is titled “An Evolution of the Human Spirit As Seen Through Mosaic Art” will also include reproductions and mosaics depicting religious scenes and icons."
Lots of detailed history on production of mosaics since the 16th Century at the Vatican Mosaic Studio. This was prepared for an exhibition of the Vatican Mosaic Studio at the Old Ursuline Convent in NOLA. Full color reproductions of pieces and process go deep into accomplishments in the Catholic Church and processes of tesserae and restoration. Many mosaics that are figurative have a coarseness and cartoonish to me due to the obviousness of the individual pieces. Very impressive pieces reproduced here come from the "cut and filament enamel technique." Such mosaics seem indistinguishable from paintings and look really amazing.
