The world sees Lady Elora Brodie as a rigid, controlling noblewoman, but inside her beats a passionate and rebellious heart. Determined to protect her independence, she will do anything to avoid marriage to her insistent neighbor—and every other man for that matter. She will even venture beyond the comforts of home to traverse the disreputable shipyards of Inverness in search of a man reckless enough to set her plan in motion, a plan she hopes will ensure that she never need utter the words “to honor and obey.”
To all the world, Nathan Campbell is fearless, strong, irresistibly sexy and when not tracking down thieves for a price, he can generally be found in a tavern, too far into his cups and draped by women vying to welcome him into their beds. But if they were to look beyond his devilishly charming smile to his eyes, they would see that he was hollow inside, and no amount of coin, drink, or women could fill the void in his heart.
Both Elora and Nathan will see the other as a means to achieve their worldly goals—but what if within their wounded hearts beats more? What if dreams lie in wait? Dreams that can only be realized when unleashed by a passion too powerful to contain and impossible to deny.

She has a BA in anthropology from the University of New Hampshire, and an MA in International Studies from Birmingham University in the UK. She daydreams constantly, and gets her best story ideas while running; she is even training for a half-marathon. She also finds inspiration in Nature, a quality revealed through the powerful description and drama in her books. Currently TO BEWITCH A HIGHLANDER, HIGHLAND THUNDER, and TO LOVE A WARRIOR (Books 1, 2 & 3 of the Isle of Mull series) are available. HIGHLAND SHADOWS, Beautiful Darkness Series, Book 1 is a Paranormal Highland Romance. Lily is hoping to release book 2 in the Beautiful Darkness Series in Spring 2016. A JEWEL IN THE VAULTS, an award-winning novella, will soon be available in audio! Most recently, Lily has released JACK: A Scottish Outlaw with the promise of many more Scottish Outlaws to come.
She lives in New England with her cherished husband and daughter.
The story didn't start off very clean and I'm only 20% in and I am going to not finish it. I wish they had ratings for books because this looks like a really exciting one but I really like clean romances.
Lady Elora Brodie is not your average noblewoman and is a Laird in her own right, but nobody really knows the real Elora. The world sees her as uptight and controlling, but deep down inside her beats a passionate and rebellious heart. Determined to protect not only her independence, but everything she has, she will do absolutely anything to avoid marriage to her insistent neighbor. And every other man for that matter. Now she has ventured out to the disreputable shipyards of Inverness to find a man. The man she's looking for has to be reckless enough to help set her plan in motion, a plan she prays will put to rest the notion of marriage so that she never need speak the words "to honor and obey."
Nathan Campbell is not only fearless and strong he is also unbelievably sexy and when he's not out making a living by tracking down thieves, he can usually be found in a tavern drunk with women literally vying for his attention. But if you were to really take a good look into his silver eyes, you would see that he is hollow inside and until he can trust someone enough to unburden his heart he will stay empty inside.
Both Elora and Nathan see each other as a means to achieve their goals. But what if their goals are too different to help eachother? What if they can find mutual ground to both help eachother in every way that is needed?
Wow Lily Baldwin is amazing. This is one of the best books I've read this year. It was like watching a delicate flower bloom with their love. They took their time and made sure they knew exactly what they wanted and then bam they went for it. Their first kiss was heavenly and I felt like I was part of the Brodie clan. Poor Elora has had the world on her shoulders for so long that she had a hard time relinquishing some of the control of the clan over to Nathan, but the minute she did, she was like a new woman. I just devoured this book and can't wait for the next one.
The Renegade is the first book in the Rebel Hearts series by Lily Baldwin.
Lady Elora Brodie's father passed away leaving her as head of her clan until such times as she marries. Plans had been made by her father to marry a man whom she strongly disliked. The only way out of marrying him is for her to find somebody else to at least pretend to be betrothed to.
The man she decides upon is one that she 'picks up' at a tavern. Nathan Campbell is a thief-taker. one that doesn't seem to care very much about his life. He takes on men with weapons when he hasn't armed himself! He is a good looking man and the barmaids literally hang from him when he is at the table. When Nathan finds out about Elora's plans he agrees to go along with them. She only wants him to have a public betrothal with her but plans no real wedding. He, on the other hand, has no clan and thinks maybe becoming of Laird of hers might heal his wounded soul.
What follows is a beautiful story of how Nathan and Elora help to heal each others' soul-deep wounds. There is an instant attraction between them, but they both need more than lust even if they don't realise it to begin with. They both fight their attraction and when they give in to their first kiss it was beautiful!
It was lovely reading as their relationship grew, and of course, it was with great satisfaction that the man meant to marry Elora get's thwarted even if he won't accept it.
Elora's sister, Temperance, is a great character too and I am very much looking forward to reading her story which I believe is the next in the series. I am sure it will be every bit as good as Elora's story!
I was very excited to read this book after its great reviews and social media marketing. This is one of my favorite genres but I can’t say I loved it 5-stars worth. Maybe it was too short of a story at less than 200 pages, but it lacked the development of characters, clever dialogue and twists and turns that I look so forward to in a great historical romance. It was simplistic and predictable and I lost interest halfway through. I finished it but will not continue the series.
Lady Elora Brodie of Castle Bron, was on a mission to find a man who would pretend to be her bethroth, she didn't want to marry a man her dad was planning on her to marry! The laird MacKintosh, just wants to marry her for her land and clan people, Elora is with the captain of her guards, Declan they go to a tavern and she sees Nathan Campbell, he has lead a rough seven years as a Thieftaker. Nathan meets all what she needs for the job,and Elora hires him and Nathans good friend Caleb comes with them to Castle Bron. I really enjoyed listening to this story, narrattor voice was a pleasure to listen to,did a wonderful job telling this book. Elora had a lot of hang ups and Nathan has guilt over his family and how he had left the Campbell clan. The secondary people in story were very good, made it a heart warming story., Enjoyed Temperance , Elora's little sister ! The plot was different and held my attention, as Elora and Nathan came together for a perfect ending. My review is honest as it's a very well written book,as i enjoy historical scottish stories! I recommend this audio book !
Loved Nathan from the start. A third son disowned by his father and out on his own as a hired man making enough money hunting thieves to get by and frequents any tavern along the way. He may be fierce when need be but there was a soft, patient side that only one woman would witness.
Elora needed to find a man who would do anything for a bag of coin to pretend to be her betrothed in order to keep from marrying a cruel neighbor. One which her father 'sort of' promised her to. But from an early age, Elora knew she could run the castle on her own and was positive she didn't need a man to do it. She's head-strong, independent, serious, and refined. What could go wrong when she meets any easy-going guy like Nathan?
Two people with hurtful pasts come together....using one another for their own gain. But what they hadn't expected was that maybe there was someone in this world that could fill the void in their hearts.
Outstanding story where two people find out when you lean on one another, the burden is lifted.
This 5 STARS depicts a wonderful in-depth description of parts of a Clan, how they act & how they are connected together on the land sort of like a giant chain. This is the 1st of Lily Baldwin's Series "Rebel Hearts Book 1". This is my 1st time reading one of her books & definitely enjoyed it.
Our thief-taker & daughter of the deceased Laird who was known as mean & evil both had emptiness in the back of their eyes even when laughing & smiling. It was apparent that Nathan & Elora, whom have been blessed by the Gods for their looks, both are chased by ghosts nobody else knows of. It's exciting especially if you enjoy reading about Scottish or even Irish things.
This book had a wonderful flow that allowed the reader to travel (with their eyes) at any pace fast or slow without interfering in the storyline 1st time reader of this author & plan on reading the rest of the Series. Also, will add the name Lily Baldwin to my list of authors I enjoy reading.
This novel was a wonderful story with a moving storyline. This is not your same boy meets girl story. A beautiful, lady, Elora Brodie who was rigid and controlling as she had to be to protect her clan. Elora was desperate to find a man to pay to pretend to be her betrothed to avoid marriage to a disreputable evil man. Eloras father was in the process of selling her to an evil neighbour prior to his death. The betrothal papers were never completed or signed but the neighbour still wanted the land and wealth that was Eloras. Elora finds sexy handsome, fearless and strong Nathan Campbell. Nathan was a 3rd son in line for the Campbell lairdship, but he was earning his wealth by being a bounty Hunter. Who would have ever expected what happened next.
Upright noblewoman and a thieftaker are quite the combination
I liked Elora's determination and really like Declan for letting her lead. I hope the old man gets his life partner even tho he is a side character. But our first view of Nathan.....actually as we follow his drinking and wenching, right up to the room, Lily gives us a scoundrel. And Caleb is an excellent side kick. I I love the story. I thought there was an even darker reason for Elora's ice but it was enough. Now I am eagerly anticipating the next book. I'm hooked on the series and hope to see more of the sister and brothers to come too. Thanks, Lily!
Nathan is running from his past. He and his friend are their catchers and have made quite a fortune doing so but it is not enough to stop his nightmares. Lora is trying to escape an arranged marriage to a friend of her fathers. She is looking for a man to hire as her betrothed to escape it when she finds Nathan in a bar by the sea. He agrees. Nathan thinks it is his opportunity to become laird and make something of himself and overcome his past disappointments. They begin to realize that what they thought they needed was something else altogether.
Elora Brodie must save her people and herself from the vile Laird Egan Mackintosh. Promised in marriage by her cruel father to Mackintosh, Elora must hire someone to be her betrothal in order to thwart his plan. Searching taverns/inns on the waterfront, she finds the type of man she needs. Nathan Campbell, is a thief taker who's not afraid to take on any man. The sparks between them can't be denied. Nathan wants a true marriage and his plan is to fan the flames between them. Lily Baldwin books are filled with tension and desire. One of my favorite authors.
The book had me excited one minute and biting my nails the next...would Elora ever admit that she has a heart or would she push Nathan away....or would Nathan ever reveal his dark secrets ,..would what ever those secrets were be to much for Elora and she'd push him away...definitely a page turned waiting to see if there would be a battle and with which clan....can't wait for books to see where the story goes...as always thank you Lily for a wonderful story that kept me on the edge of my seat until the end....
This was a fantastic book. A great start to a new series. I read it in one sitting because I could not put it down. The story was interesting and unique. Nathan and Elora were great characters. I liked them immediately. As a matter of fact, all of the characters were well-written and I look forward to more books in this series. I'm looking forward to Tempest, the next book in the series. I highly recommend Lily Baldwin's The Scottish Outlaws series.
I'm so glad I found this book and this author. I was caught by this book from the first page and couldn't put down until the end (which was 3:24 in the morning). Elora and Nathan along with Tempest and Caleb make this book spectacular. They come alive, grab your attention and don't let go until the end. I can't wait for Tempest's story and to see wait makes Caleb tick.
COULDN'T GET INTO THE STORY. It's a pretty average plot, and while the characters were lovely...the mild chemistry barely kept me going at all. I guess I'm looking for a highlander story with something MORE than just a normal storyline.
And, with the heroine being so standoffish (YES, I know she's supposed to be like the ICE QUEEN) even after 11 chapters...I'm thinking it might take a longggg while for her to thaw.
The Renegade (Rebel Hearts Book 1) by Lily Baldwin is a delightful Historical Romance set in Scotland. Lady Elora Brodie and Nathan Campbell's story is beautifully written and well excuted. Fast paced, with intrigue, mystery, love, romance, suspense and a HEA. I absolutely loved this story, I read it in one setting. I can't wait for the next adventure. A not to miss Medieval Scottish Romance! Well done, Ms. Baldwin!!
I loved how two hearts broken became one heart forever! I have never read anything by this author until now. Without a doubt she has become a new favorite! Lily Baldwin has Historical Romance down pat with her engaging, talented, enchanting characters coming alive and entering our own hearts! Read this and enjoy and I am sure this author will become one of your favorites too! I will be recommending this book to friends and family!
Nathan was a broken man. Banished from his clan by his own father, he had made his living as a thief-taker. Elopes was head of her clan and needed to find a husband so she wouldn’t have to marry a 13-year-old boy. Could these two come together and make a marriage to protect her from the hostile clan of the boy? Could he ever love, hardly knowing what love was supposed to be? Read this great book!
ADULT Medieval🏰🗡 Romance💕 This novel is heavy on the romance and light on the conflicts and politics of the day. Would have liked to see more about the clan disputes and everyday life. There were several phrases used in the book that are from modern times that really stuck out in a bad way and should behave been edited out. The book is a 4 out of 5 on the angst scale. Way too much angst from the female character for me.
Elora chooses thief-taker Nathan for a fake betrothed to thwart a greedy Laird. However as time passes she discovers desire and thanks to Tempest realizes she loves him. A misunderstanding separates them but Caleb and Declan sees them reunited. A well written story with an unexpected HEA for all. I highly recommend, a book you won't put down once you begin.
Great story and characters this writer is new for me but story and characters were well written two lost souls looking redemption they had their ShEA only thing missing was an epilogue but us readers always want a little more would highly recommend it's a page Turner with great intrigue and romance
Nathan had been banished from his clan seven years ago and began being a thief taker. Elvira was head of her Clan but was being threatened by a neighboring clan chief claiming her as his. She meets Nathan in a bar and decides he's the one to help her Lily Baldwin weaves a tale that keeps you turning the pages
This was a good book, I read it all in a days time. wish there was more built around the overall story. It felt to rushed and ended how I expected and that was a tiny bit disappointing but i still really enjoyed it. but I believe this author in more years to come will have many wonderful stories to share.
From the 1st page to the last page, I was so excited to see the next chapter. I never lost interest and the characters were great. Lily really writes a great story and I can't wait to read all the books in this series. And the intimate scenes were written really good. Her writing has you coming back for more.
Nathan the renegade, makes his way lost cold and lonely. Until an opportunity to become a laird falls into his path and a beautiful lass to boot. Now all he has to do is have her love him.
I loved the determination of a young lady to keep her clan safe and the lengths she went through. Our hero is a mistreated young man still fighting his demons.
This was a great light read! The writing is very good. Nothing distracted from the story and it painted a great picture. I find that to be a rare quality. I really enjoyed this book.
Loved the story line...great characters. No complaints at all. Can't wait to read the next book in the series. A really fast read, lots of action....loved the ending.
I really enjoyed this book. I wish it were about 50 pages longer to really fill it out. The ending was pretty rushed, a little cheesy, but overall I enjoyed it enough to download book 2.
