Her Cowboy Sweetheart
By: Cathy McDavid

REVIEW ☆☆☆☆
I do love a good Harlequin Heartwarming story, and Cathy McDavid delivers a beautiful read that is wholesome, clean, entertaining and insightful. Carly and JD are a compelling couple from the start. Both have issues to concern themselves with daily. Carly is a divorced single mother with an ex husband who is a sorry excuse for a man. Adding to this, his parents create major trouble and stress for Carly. Fortunately, she has JD for support, but he has medical issues that changed his life. He is still adjusting and doesn't want to be a burden to Carly. With an adorable little boy in the middle, Carly and JD must either fight for their love, or walk away before it's too late. This story touches on series issues, and the author treats these with sensitivity and respect. Although there is a seriousness that prevails through the story, it is still fun and enjoyable. Carly and JD are warm, compassionate and genuine characters who are easy to love. Their story is an excellent balance of light and heavy. I very much enjoyed reading Her Cowboy Sweetheart, and I'm ready to read another story with all the feels, just like this one. Romance readers will delight in this touching story of life's triumphs, tragedies and the power of love.

Her Cowboy Sweetheart is a great addition to the Sweetheart Ranch series, yet it is able to be read and enjoyed as a stand alone novel, too. I really liked the two main characters, JD and Carly. They both showed, time and again, throughout the novel that they would put the safety of others above what their heart desired.

Their growing feelings for each other, despite JD’s apprehension to enter into a relationship while dealing with health issues, provided some great chemistry. I really enjoyed watching their romance develop. Carly’s in-laws were annoying and pushy, while Carly always clearly tried to have the best interest of her son at the heart of her decisions. She proved herself to be a very strong woman.

Sweet story filled with hope about a single mom starting over in a new place. She finds friendship and love with a kind man coping with a career ending balance disorder.

First of all – don’t you just love the cover? That little cowboy is stinkin’ adorable! And both he and the dog steal every scene they’re in at some point. So cute!

Her Cowboy Sweetheart continues the Sweetheart Ranch series with another enjoyable installment. I’ve loved each book so far and this one was a perfect fit with the rest. The sweet friendship between JD and Carly makes a believable foundation for their romance. JD’s Latino roots make him one swoony cowboy, while Carly’s genuine heart makes her instantly likable for readers. Add in her super cute son and JD’s energetic puppy, and you have a feel-good story that will leave you smiling. Of course, we have to deal with some pesky people who aren’t as likable, but this just gives JD and Carly more ways to be protective of each other. Win-win.

JD’s struggles with Ménière’s disease and Carly’s custody battle with her former in-laws (and parents of her abusive ex-husband) add emotional layers to the plot that give the story further depth and dimension. The author does a great job of increasing awareness for both of these issues through Her Cowboy Sweetheart while also not bogging down or overpowering the story.

Bottom Line: Cathy McDavid delivers another sweet & swoony romance set at the Sweetheart Ranch. Engaging characters and compelling subplots immediately draw readers’ interest and keep it for the duration of the novel. Hombre the dog and toddler Rickie add notes of comedy and warmth to break up the more serious undertones that threaten JD and Carly’s budding romance, and you’ll quickly fall in love with both of them. Another great visit to the Sweetheart Ranch – ready for the next!

Friends Carly Leighton and JD Moreno cannot deny their mutual attraction, but of course, neither is looking for romance right now. Carly has her adorable one-year-old son to consider, while JD is adjusting in like of life-changing health concerns. Still, as the story unfolds, their challenges push them together. Their friendship shines through it all—and perhaps, even proves that becoming more is exactly the right choice.

Visiting Sweetheart Ranch once again in Her Cowboy Sweetheart is a pleasure. The story between Carly and JD tends to be more serious and emotional than most I have read from Harlequin Heartwarming, yet Cathy McDavid makes sure it has some lightheartedness, too. Overall, the story’s elements work well to deliver a heartwarming read, and as I read, I found it to be an easy one to enjoy.

Thank you in advance to the author, Cathy McDavid, and Prism Book Tours for providing a complimentary review copy. A positive review was not required. All words are my own.

While I am not new to the Harlequin Heartwarming books, I am new to McDavid’s work.

While this is part of a series, it can easily be a standalone read. I wouldn’t have known it was part of a series to be honest.

What is interesting is that this is the third (3rd) in the Heartwarming line of “The Sweetheart Ranch” series, however “Mustang Valley” has eight (8) novels in the Harlequin Western Romance (formerly Harlequin American Romance) line. I am familiar with that one and had been reading the line over 20 years ago.

I was drawn to this story because of a different type of male protagonist – one with a disability (or rather a medical issue that is somewhat debilitating at first), JD Moreno. And, there is single mom Carly Leighton with an adorable little boy (roughly about a year old).

The story takes a different turn than most – these two realize they do care for each other right away and don’t deny it, nor do they really fight the attraction. However, JD is practical in that he wants to get his Ménière's disease under control before entertaining the idea of a relationship, especially with Carly.

But, nearly a year after Carly’s divorce, her in-laws suddenly become interested in her son Rickie. Their son Patrick was violent towards Carly in their marriage, which was worse when he drank (alcoholism). There are some mild references to domestic abuse, and one incident (pre-story) of Patrick smacking Carly’s friend. These are disturbing and anyone who might get triggered by the events should make note of this.

Carly is suspicious and with good reason – her in-laws are not exactly being honest with their intentions. But, it ends up having a somewhat unexpected turn in that Carly and JD decide to date after all despite the initial reluctance. I loved how Carly was upfront and honest about her marriage with JD and their relationship was free from real arguing, anger, or anything negative. It was a beautiful, compassionate understanding of each one’s past and present which highlighted the more important aspects of a relationship – trust and respect. JD refuses to be a burden to her.

But, her in-laws don’t like JD, and after a medical episode – things go downhill pretty fast, and their true intentions are revealed. It made me wonder that even if JD wasn’t in the picture would they have done what they did.

JD’s love and respect showed when he had to make a decision that would break his and Carly’s heart. I also enjoyed seeing Carly’s own turmoil between doing what was right for her son; but, not completely ignoring a nagging suspicion, which turned out to be right.

In addition, Carly’s in-laws were pretty much fooling themselves in helping their son try to regain custody or reverse the termination. In Arizona (where the story takes place), it is often hard to get parental rights re-instated. Per a legal website: “it is possible, but there has to be strong legal or public policy ground. The courts believe there is a great interest in the finality of a judgment, and that includes the termination of a parent’s rights”. But, the threat was enough to worry Carly, so that showed how manipulative they were being in the situation. Even after everything that happened – I still didn’t trust them in the end.

McDavid’s realistic visual of the entire relationship with JD and Carly, along with the dysfunctional intricacies of the in-laws’ involvement was vivid and brutally honest. I was truly drawn into and invested in JD and Carly’s future. Also, Hombre the dog was a true tension breaker. He was just a sweetheart. I could feel JD’s frustration with him, but also saw the love he had for the poor misguided pup. It was also sweet to see how Hombre took right to Carly’s son without hesitation or any jealousy.

This is very different from the other Heartwarming novels I’ve read – in a very good way. It is not a light-hearted read; instead it is a powerful, heart-tugging, emotionally engaging, honest, and beautiful tale of real life issues and real love. A love that puts what is best and needed overall, rather than wants and desires.

A happy ending doesn’t always come right away, but it will come when it is meant to be. This is one read that will stick with readers for a while and perhaps make them examine their own relationships. This is perhaps one of the most emotional Heartwarming books I’ve read.

The cover was cute with the dog and little boy – though the boy on the cover is older than the boy in the story. That threw me for a bit, unless it is to represent the boy’s age at the end of the novel. A little child, a misguided pup, two people who love each other – that is the EXACT meaning of “Heartwarming”. This is a clean read with no intimate scenes and no foul language.

I enjoyed McDavid’s approach to touching on Ménière's disease. Only a few symptoms of this rare disorder are touched on in this story – namely his loss of balance, vertigo, and nausea. There are other symptoms.

Some attacks can last anywhere from a few minutes to 24 hours. There were other symptoms that were not explored – tinnitus (sensation of ringing) in the affected ear, loss of hearing in the affected ear, aural fullness, and headaches. Most people being diagnosed between the ages of 40-60. For a complete diagnosis, one has to have the four major ones – prolonged vertigo (20 minutes to eight hours at a time); a fluctuating hearing loss of lower frequencies just before, during or right after the vertigo attack; roaring tinnitus; and a sensation of the affected ear’s canal filling up.

With regard to driving – JD may not have been allowed to drive until the symptoms are under control. So the author takes great care to highlight this aspect. It is something to seriously consider.

I did not know what kind of surgery or implant he could have that would alleviate the symptoms as the condition is incurable. I would’ve liked that better explained.

This book was a great way to introduce readers to this disorder that affects about 69 million American adults over the age of 40 at some point in their lives, roughly about 35% of the US population.

For those wanting to follow up on this particular disorder, AARP has a wonderful web page dedicated to the ins, outs, and celebrities who battle the disorder: https://www.aarp.org/health/condition....

This is another great article to read: https://vestibular.org/news/02-02-201....

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I have read several of Cathy McDavid books and have really enjoyed them so I was excited about reading this one. First of all, this is the sweetest cover, with the cutest little boy and the adorable furry friend. Such a comforting picture. And inside this book, Ms. McDavid deals with many real life challenging situations.

Carly is at Sweetheart Ranch for a fresh start, but she wasn’t looking to spending so much time with her neighbor. Neither was former bull rider JD Moreno looking for or interested in being attracted to anyone. But they found comfort in helping each other out in dealing with life’s problems.

Author Cathy McDavid gives her reader another Heartwarming read. Sometimes it wasn’t so heartwarming though, like when Carly’s inlaws all of a sudden take interest in her son Ricky. I really like the way Ms. McDavid handles the issue, and this is just one of the many lessons you will learn from this book!

I enjoyed getting to know Carly and JD as well as the other characters that make up this book. Cathy McDavid created a wonderful and interesting cast of characters to tell her story. I love how each one developed throughout the story, getting to know what each of their personalities bring to the story. There are several twist that takes place in the story, but the ending was weaved together in a special way that will keep me thinking about the story until we see another book from this author! If you love a good clean Romance, this one is for you. Be sure and check out the other books in this series as well.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Her Cowboy Sweetheart is a wonderful story about Carly Leighton and JD Moreno. Carly has been divorced for more than a year from an alcoholic, abusive husband,Pat. She and her son, Rickie, moved and she worked full time along with turning a hobby into a part time business. The ex had signed away all his parental rights which suited Carly just fine. Pat's parents never believed that their son could be so abusive. For a year they didn't even try and see their grandson. Then, after a year, things changed out of the blue and they want to see their grandson.

JD is a former bull rider. Recently diagnosed with Meniere's disease has changed his life. When he met Carly he fell for her immediately. He felt that she would be better off if they kept things strictly platonic. She didn't need to have someone that she would have to take care of possibly for the rest of his life. But no matter what, he would always have her back and protect her and Rickie.

Now you will have to read the book to find out how they handled all that was put in front of them. Could love pull them together or will it pull them apart? I loved this book and hated for it to end.

Real and appealing characters with real problems make this book special. So does the setting of ranch country in Arizona. It was fascinating to learn about JD's balance disorder and how it could crop up at any moment and throw a wrench into his life. A good man, patient with dogs and children, and with Carly and her issues, too.

Her Cowboy Sweetheart

I love books that deal with real life illnesses. In Her Cowboy Sweetheart JD has a balance disorder that affects his everyday life.
I have read a lot about the illness he has and I am glad to see a character in a book that has it. There needs to be more awareness of it.

Carly is a single mom that gets involved with JD. Her former in laws are interfering in her and trying to influence her dating JD. They are doing other things too. Read the book to find out what it is.

In Her Cowboy Sweetheart I enjoyed the little boy so much. I loved the spelling of his name. I also enjoyed the dog in the book. Kids and dogs in a story always makes it better.

I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author through Prism book tours. This book review is my own opinion.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy from the Prism Book Tours. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Her Cowboy Sweetheart by Cathy McDavid is a cute romantic book about two people falling in love and finding themselves being a family.
Can JD and Carly be good together for Rickie's sake?
JD Moreno
JD Moreno was a bull rider in the rodeo until he had to retire because of something that keeps JD from being on his own two feet. He is a great guy, and it shows. JD thinks that being in a relationship with his disease isn't such a good thing. Slowly though, he realizes that it is. JD just has to realize that maybe there is more to life than being on the rodeo circuit. There are a lot of things that I like about JD and most of them I can't say because of spoilers. Everything is excellent, though.
Carly Leighton
Carly Leighton has been away from her ex-husband for a whole year and raising their son on her own. She loves her son Rickie and wants what is best for him. One of the things that Carly knows that isn't best for her son is having a relationship with his father until he is older. Carly loves making her jewelry for the horses to wear in competition and loves working over at the Sweetheart Ranch's boutique. Just like with JD, there are many things that I like about Carly, but I don't want to get into the spoiling zone so that I won't say.

I just know that these two are a great couple and make a great little family.
Five Stars
Her Cowboy Sweetheart by Cathy McDavid is an excellent book that I was instantly transported into and not wanting to leave. I loved every minute of it. Ms. McDavid did a fantastic job on this book, and this series is becoming a favorite of mine. I love the little tidbits of some Spanish being spoken, and to the way, Carly was envisioned as a single mom. I am giving this book five stars and recommending it to anyone that reads romances.

I have read “The sweetheart ranch” books number 2 and 3 so I was really excited to read the next book in the series. I love the ranch setting where these books take place. It’s really fun and easy to read.

I really liked Carly’s character and I could relate to her being a protective single mom and hesitating to bring a man into her child’s life. Her battles with custody are emotional and very real and tugged at my heart strings. I loved how the ranch was a safe place for her and her son to heal and move forward.

JD was also a great character! His passion to help others all the while struggling with his disease and trying to stay positive about life.

I laughed and got teary… lots of great emotions and events happening in this story! I can’t wait to read more in this series! Highly recommend for a fun, easy read.

As if Carly and JD aren’t cute enough together, Cathy McDavid goes and adds an adorable one year old and a dog who is learning to obey (not so well) to the mix in Her Cowboy Sweetheart.

This friends-to-more romance ramps up quick as the attraction between Carly and JD is something neither of them deny from the start. But each of them also has some big concerns with starting a relationship.

McDavid throws some difficult challenges (health and family) at her characters that they must overcome before they can reach their happily ever after. Those challenges also keep the plot moving along at a good clip. And Rickie and Hombre add some great moments throughout.
This is a fantastic addition to the Sweetheart Ranch series.

I so love this series so much. These books are make you feel good romances. This book was no different. I could hardly put it down. I read it i a day.I loved Carly ad JD. JD is going to win your heart right off. He's a special man where life has throw him a curve ball ad he believes he's a burden to any future love prospects. Carly and her little boy are a bright spot for JD. I turn he is for them as well. JD and Carly are so adorably cute together. Trust me after you finish this book your heart is going to be happy sighing. Then throw in JD's dog Hombre you have recipe for a great book. It's a must read!

This was a joy to read. Carly Leighton was recovering from a bad marriage and JD Moreno was coming to terms with a lifetime illness. I love the way Cathy draws you into the the story. She gives you a idea of what each of them are trying to live with. Then to add to the mix is her mix is the ex-in-laws who want to see Rickie. There are surprises and the coming to term of things done. There is a test as to honesty. But what makes the story is the building of a relationship while dealing with some serious problems and how Cathy solves them. It brings Carly and JD closer in the end. Its a great book and worth reading. J

I fell in love with this book in more than one way. If you look at the cover your heart just wants to melt as the little boy is so cute and so is the puppy. Then you start reading this book and you don't want to put it down as story is just so good it deals with an ex mother in law who it out of place also a disease that a gentleman has no control over. Put that all together and it just becomes a really good read and is one that you don't want it to end. Cathy hit the ball out of the park for a home run!

Clean romance, very cute leads. Disappointed in what I consider not enough harsh consequences for the former in laws, it actually made me frustrated with the book a few times and I had to put it down. I also wish there was a little more around an acknowledgement of the ML's actual name and not his nickname, just at the end where she would actually use his real name. From a POC perspective, that would have been an intimate significance that could have added more to their relationship.

Her Cowboy Sweetheart is the fourth book in The Sweetheart Ranch series, but you definitely do not have to read these in order! You’ll enjoy this book just as much if you just jump in here. The Sweetheart Ranch books all revolve around the wedding business and horses, of course!

The main characters in Her Cowboy Sweetheart are ones that I really enjoyed getting to know. They’ve both got issues holding them back from serious relationships, but when you know you’ve found the one, you just know! I really liked Carly. She’s a single mom working two jobs to support herself and her toddler. Carly is a very caring and strong character. She was victim of spousal abuse, yet she doesn’t feel sorry for herself. This girl is driven, and she’s got goals.

Carly’s tie to The Sweetheart Ranch is the gift shop. She runs this shop that sells things like cake toppers, candles, garters…little things you might need for your wedding. Carly designs and creates jewelry for horses in her “spare” time. Her jewelry business takes her to the horse side of The Sweetheart Ranch since she likes to photograph her pieces with actual horse models. Being in the barns is how Carly becomes acquainted with JD.

JD suffers from Meniere’s disease which is a balance disorder. He had to leave the career he loved, bull riding, yet find a way to stay connected to his passion. He and Carly connect in a way neither of them expected. With their past and present issues, they feel that being friends is best. But like I said, when you know you know.

I enjoyed how the romance developed in Her Cowboy Sweetheart. The author brought conflict into the book for the characters as individuals and together. I love how they draw strength from each other.

This a very sweet and inspiring book, and I think you’ll enjoy it.

Her Cowboy Sweetheart is such a heartwarming and sweet novel that it was hard to stop reading it once I started. I quickly got caught up in the story of single mom, Carly Leightman who is raising her precious little boy, Rickie. She's also busy working two jobs and is lucky to have the help of former bull rider, JD Moreno.
Carly and JD are both facing some challenges that hold them back from serious relationships, she's had a marriage that ended badly while he suffers from an illness that prevents him from doing the job he loves the most and also avoiding any serious long term commitments.

Their story is one that will stay with me for a long time. They are both hardworking, selfless, and caring and I found myself rooting for them to live their best possible lives. I thought the author penned an emotional story with likeable characters and I will definitely be reading more of her work. What I enjoyed most of all is that this is a clean romance that is suitable for readers of all ages.

Carly Leighton finally thinks she's got her life on track with a good job she loves at Sweetheart Ranch, a side gig making jewelry for the cowgirls who want to pretty up their horses and a home of her own while she cares for her year-old son. And she's made a friend so different from her abusive ex-husband.

JD Moreno likes her, too, but he fears that his balance problems make moving forward to be more than just a friend with Carly a no-no. So...they agree to be just friends.

But when her ex-in-laws suddenly take an interest in little Rickie, she has a right to be suspicious. No way does she want her son anywhere near her ex-husband. But everyone deserves a second chance, so she allows the couple to take Rickie to the park without her. But her worst fears are realized when JD happens to see them with a third adult, the man who has to be Rickie's dad. When he texts Carly, a confrontation can't be avoided, but what will it mean for the relationship JD wants with Carly?

I was absorbed into this story fairly quickly. The characters are engaging and interesting, and their dilemmas aren’t typical in romance.

Carly Leighton is easy to sympathize with. She is a single mom and is trying to overcome a difficult and painful past.

JD Moreno is easy to connect with as well. I like his personality, and the organic way his relationship with Carly grew.

Prior to this book, I’d never heard of the inner ear condition that former bull rider, JD Moreno, experiences (Meniere’s disease.) It adds another element to this story that gives it depth and uniqueness. Plus, I love learning new things.

Although I’m not a big fan of the cover art, the story is realistic, potent, and deeply moving.

Very sweet, emotional romance. The dual conflicts of the hero's medical condition and heroine's past abusive relationship had me hooked, and the addition of an adorable dog and kid made me smile throughout. Great comfort reading.

(I read the Harlequin Heartwarming edition of this book, which I didn't see on Goodreads.)
