Ryan Keene works for the Navy's Marine Mammal Program. He and his sea lion companion, Hansel, search and retrieve equipment lost in the oceans depths. Their latest mission is in the vast Artic region. Usually these missions are straight forward, but an armed Russian oil company is paying close attention to the recovery. The next thing Ryan knows, he's on the run with Hansel across the Artic ice toward a Finnish Research station. While hunted by the Russians, he must worry about staying warm, eating enough food, and avoiding polar bears and walrus herds.
This is an excellent book for 4th and 5th grade boys. It's packed with action and weaves in factual information about oil drilling, environmental changes, animal training, human and animal survival in extreme conditions, and the global fight for Arctic territory. Highly recommend this and London's other series Dog Tags.

This story is about a man and a sea lion and their crazy adventure. The mans name is Ryan Keene and the sea lions name is Hansel. They were recruited for the U.S. Navy's Marine Mammal Program. This program doesn't involve a lot of real danger which is good for them but it also isn't that exciting either. They normally just recover objects from the ocean floor. But they end up in the perilous Artic one day from their helicopter getting filled with snow and then crashing. That is where everything changes for them. They are struck with danger everywhere they have to be safe from all the polar bears on the ice. They also have to stay out of the water from all the killer whales. The ice, snow and woods are other dangers to them. Their were mercenaries there too. But they didn't know that the mercenaries told them that they were from the oil companies and then captured the whole crew. Hansel woke up and slipped out of the ropes he was tied in and then chew Ryan out of his. They couldn't help the whole crew at that very moment. But they left and had to survive by hunting and everything. Then they found a track from a broken helicopter that they were able to fix and go back to base. They also ended up saving the rest of the crew after getting back to base without getting caught by the mercenaries.
