“The switchbacks kept on coming relentlessly… 8, 9, 10… then 20… then 30… I think there are 48 hairpins as you climb up the eastern ramp to the top and they hit you continually with no respite. But then you catch a glance of the village that sits at 2757m atop the pass.”
Martin Smith, adventurer and author, lives in Cheadle, Greater Manchester.
He’s had a great passion for bikes since he was a child and spent many hours on the back of his father’s motorbikes travelling from Manchester across the Pennines and the occasional day trip to Wales.
He bought his first motorbike aged sixteen, while serving an electrical apprenticeship but later sold this for his first car. Several years down the line, with a career in IT and with two grown-up children, Martin bought a sports bike, then upgraded to a proper adventure bike and his journeys across the globe soon began.
I scheduled a day trip not too long ago on my moto and took this book along with my usual tea. I found a quaint little spot somewhere in the middle of my small adventure, broke out your book, and put the kettle on. I remember sitting back and relaxing with a bit of chuckle from the characters in the book and picturing in my mind the vivid images that jump out from your words. I felt myself holding my breath at times waiting to see what lies around the next bend. It was almost like being there. Thanks for the great read my friend. I’ll be waiting not so patiently for your next adventure.
This is an entertaining account of a motorbike tour of the alps, combining practical tips and advice for planning a trip with reminiscences of scrapes and banter between a group of friends. Some great pictures too, and enough detail to be able to follow the routes that the intrepid adventurers take.
A gentle easy read, I enjoyed it. A bit more adventure would have been nice, there was rather a lot of we went from A to B to C and back to A. I got a bit lost trying to follow the journey!
