Charlotte Williams a 42-year-old widow of 5 years with 2 adult children is heading out for a medical mission trip to Guatemala with a group of co-workers. She meets a group of Marines at the airport prior to leaving. She hasn’t even considered dating since the death of her husband, but when she meets the tall, dark, and handsome Marine, she begins to reconsider her celibacy, however she won’t ever see him again, right? She doesn’t even know his name.
Jordan “Hawk” Jackson is a 46-year-old Marine Special Ops soldier and leader of his team. He has been burned badly in his first marriage being left to raise his son on his own 16 years ago. He had felt something was missing in his life but couldn’t put his finger on it until he met a beautiful stranger in an airport café while traveling for a new mission. He suddenly wanted to have this woman, but he didn’t even know her name. He wouldn’t ever see her again anyway, right?
Destiny had other plans. While raiding a suspected compound of an evil drug lord in the Columbian jungle, Hawk finds Charlotte beaten and bound lying on a jungle path, thrown out like trash. His protective instincts kick in and he is determined to keep her safe no matter the cost.
Can Hawk protect her from the forces that would keep them apart and drag her back into Hell? Only time will tell if Destiny will let them find the happily ever after they long for.
It was a really good premise... love the idea of the second chance love... and anything involving Susan Stoker's world is a 'must-read' for me ( unless it contains hardcore BSDM, menage's etc... not my bag - don't judge me!! ).
But... there were several irksome details for me. Some proof-reading definitely needed... 'manors' instead of 'manners' used at least twice. 'Pleural' instead of 'plural'... this detracted from the reading for me... found myself looking for more mistakes, which was vexing. Some of the sentence structure felt very cumbersome, some simple re-phrasing would've helped the flow.
Also... the was no resolution to what happened to the 'baddies'... always need closure. Her kids were morons. Her so-called 'friends'... ridiculous. Found myself shouting in frustration on more than one occasion.
But... I didn't hate it... liked the length. Liked the appearances of our favourite Seals.
So I really wanted to get on her and kind of crap on this, but then I realized that this was this author's first book. So I decided that I will try to make this a constructive and informative review.
There are two things this book really needed. A good editor. And a decent Beta reader.
So. Many. Mistakes. I finally started highlighting them just to see how many. I ended up with over 20 and I didn't even do comma errors. For crying out loud, one of the chapters was designated as the H's perspective, but 3 sentences in you can tell it's the h's. I have no idea what it takes to write a book, but you need to have someone comb through it to weed these kind of things out.
There is potential. Her steamy scenes were great, but the overall characters and verbiage REALLY needs some development. Read great books by great authors. Take notes and try again. I hope that she does.
Needs an editor. More typos than I can count. Good storyline: nurse practitioner goes to Guatemala on a medical mission, gets kidnapped and tortured, saved by Marines, falls for her savior. Not the best execution. Fix the typos!!!
All the pieces were there to make this story be one of those special favorite reads for me: older characters, the instant connection/attraction, the jungle rescue, the uber protective alpha hero, the strong and vulnerable heroine, them-together-against-the-world vibe, the suspense plot line, the heroine who suffers from bad dreams/nightmares (something I can identify with strongly), the steamy times, the sweet kid (his), a brotherhood who has your back, nice/loving parents (why do so many parents have to be evil???). So much good!
But, there was still something missing or something that just didn't settle right with me with this story. Some of Hawk's actions I wish he chose differently (one of the shower scenes for example) or comments he made that I know were probably intended to be swoony-hot but to me lessened the attraction (ahem, think it don't say it, you're smarter than that). Charlotte's kids and friends gave me a bad taste (which, again, the intent for their characters was good, but how it was expressed didn't jive well for me). The drama of the suspense story line at the end felt a bit lackluster (I felt more terror in the jungle then the terror at the end, and I should have most definitely felt it at the end). I never really connected to Charlotte and found myself in her shoes (which while they did literally stink a good part of the story, I *wanted* to be in her shoes).
Technically, the flow of the story felt off sometimes, more like it was being told AT me, instead of me connecting to the characters and being a part of the story. I'm also all about giving grace for typos/mistakes in a story (they're always managing to sneak in there, it's genuinely okay), unfortunately, there was enough in this that it stood out in not the best of ways.
So really - it's a great story checking off so many of the romantic suspense puzzle pieces I enjoy, and I'm glad I kept pushing through to the end. But the connection I crave, the "something" that makes me want to remember the story and revisit it was lacking.
So if you haven't read Susan Stoker's books, it's ok. You can start with this Special Forces Operation Alpha series book and work your way back. So here goes. The encounter between Hawk and Charlotte was very brief. She thank his team shyly, but briefly when his team was in an airport. Who knew they would meat again during his mission. His alpha stance is beyond beautiful, but his team and Wolf's care got her out safe. Don't think Charlotte when out quiet. She is the first woman. Even after needing to be save, she fought to make sure her potential man was safe. Love that Angela Bush wrote about Hawk...with a teenage son and Charlotte with adult children. The list and heat lasts after 40 and with children and you can read it here. Happy reading.
WOW!!! That is mild to what I would love to say but don't want to leave any spoilers. This is a MUST read!!! If you are a fan of Susan Stoker and love her men and their ladies, you will fall in love with this one. A new author for me that I will be following.
....and Hawk is hooked, he knows he has let someone special walk from his life and vows he won't make.the same mistake again. Seeing Hawk's gorgeous green eyes and dreaming he will come to her rescue is what keeps Charlotte sane as she is tortured and abused, for that he is her hero......even if he never finds her. Charlotte is so strong, it is amazing her body continues to function with the injuries it sustains, but it is her mental strength that is most impressive, she may lean on Hawk and the team when she needs support but she also stands on her own two feet and fights when she needs to. Her Team moniker Wildcat is perfect and hard earned, but she has proven she will defend not only herself but those she loves until the death without hesitation. She will make a great leader for the wives and girlfriends as the other members of the team fall hard and claim their women, I love that she bonds with Caroline/Ice and the women too. A great crossover with Wolf and his team, although if we are honest we love any book with Wolf and the team! I enjoyed this book and have already downloaded book two, I read this on Kindle Unlimited.
I love the story but the grammar and spelling errors drove me crazy to the point where I almost couldn’t even finish the book! I don’t think anyone ever proofread this book after the manuscript was turned in! The words just don’t flow when you’re trying to read. For instance anytime there’s a couple words that should be put together like we’re, we've, we’ll, aren’t, wouldn’t, would’ve etc they’re not put together. Unfortunately right now my three favorite authors don’t have any new books coming out until the end of the month so I didn’t have anything to read and I found this author and I did make it through this book and now because I needed something to read I started reading her book “Emily” and that’s pretty much the same. The story is taking place in the Middle East and the team has an interpreter with them all the time. Every single time they mention the interpreter they call him the interrupter! Someone needs to proofread these books before they’re published and make the grammatical , spelling and punctuation corrections!
“Charlotte” by Angela Rush is an engaging read from start to finish. It grabbed my attention from the start and had me wanting to turn each page to find out what would happen next. This military, romantic suspense is the perfect combination of suspense, intrigue, layered characters, appealing plot, and romance. I also loved this story because of the featured later in life relationship and the main characters, Charlotte and Jordan (Hawk), having a second chance at finding love. They have a connection from the start. Their journey is compelling filled with obstacles, family, comrades, twists & turns, romance, and trust they find in each other. “Charlotte” is Book 1 of the Finding His Destiny series and worth the read. This is my first time reading from this author and I plan to read more.
I gave this book three stars for the plot. The storyline was entertaining. I got a feel for characters and they were well developed. There were several typos throughout the book and the sentence structure was simple and repetitive. One of the paragraphs had 11 sentences and eight of the sentences were structured with the Pronoun followed by the verb “is”. Eight out of 11 she is that or he is this. There was no variety. Also the heroine profession was in the medical field...a nurse practitioner. It didn’t seem realistic that she as a NP would miss the simplest medical clues about her own body.
It drives me crazy to read a book, only to be distracted by run-)on sentences, misspelled words, and improper grammar! Lord, my English teacher would have a hissy fit! Try this; PROOFREAD! And I am talking about a human proofing the books. Not a computer or auto-correct! I think the fact that all computers, laptops, iPads & iPhones have built in autocorrect and there are still so many errors is quite sad. Embarrassing. LFLenox
I chose this rating because this is actually a pretty good book. I really enjoy most all of the characters. This was a book of protection, kindness, compassion, and falling in love. I really enjoyed Hawk and Charlotte story. I think they made a very interesting couple. They both have a very strong will and stubborn streak. One thing they both had in common they loved each other. Great read! I recommend this book to all romance readers.
I liked the storyline between Hawk and Charlotte. I was excited for a book to tie characters from Susan Stokers Seal series. Unfortunately, the writing was clumsy and it needed a lot more editing. I got around 70 pages in and I just couldn’t go on. I’m bummed because looking forward to diving into their story. Maybe I’ll try one of her books later in the series to see if the writing is better.
Good book. I thought JoAnn was a jealous bitch but to find out that she was in league with the drug runners makes sense & it means that JoAnn gets what's coming to her. She deserves to get caught & everyone knowing what an evil bitch she is. She doesn't deserve a happy end, her happy ending is in Hell.
I found this had a good storyline but I got a little bored with the amount of detail that went into the numerous sexual encounters. I'm all for sex in books but not when it overshadows the actual story. I know others probably enjoy that but I myself skipping ahead if these scenes go on too long. Otherwise it was a very good read.
Enjoyed the storyline. Just so BADLY proofed! It made me grind my teeth! Sentences were badly written or the words weren’t used properly. Example: “here” used for the word “hear” or “manors” instead of “manners”. I REALLY don’t know if the authors are hiring bad proofreaders or are doing it themselves. Either way it was bad!
I loved the characters and the storyline. However, the book should have been proofread more thoroughly before released. I picked up several misspelled words and grammatical errors. I will definitely read more books written by this author. She did a great job!
A fast read with two people thrown together and find their second chance at a HEA. The path is full of violence, action and emotions. The writing is engaging, but the villains or reasons for violence are predictable. Enjoyed the ending and being back in a world where Tex exists.
An excellent example of romantic suspense. The main characters are not typical, but engaging. Their romantic connection is sweet, but the dangerous, drug Lords; her adult children; his teenage son and her "friends" balance it out. The author's use of Susan Stoker's characters hit the right notes, the characters coming across as Ms. Stoker wrote them.
Of course I love seeing my favorite characters from one of my favorite series. Charlotte is sweet and caring. I really like her. Hawk is great. He does not fight his feelings which is so refreshing. Charlotte also accepts him quickly too. She has some horrible people out for her. Really liked the book.
I really enjoyed the characters and plot of this first book. That's enough to make me want to read the next one in the series. The dialogue, however, was a bit over the top. People don't really talk like that.
But what really bothered me was the number of mistakes in the writing. So many... The book really should be re-edited.
I wasn’t going to deduct my rating for the many misspellings and incorrect grammar. However, there were so many that they took away from the story.
As for the story, I felt it was stilted and way over the top with the two main characters “worshipping” each other. I made it through the book but just barely.
The author had great characters to work with yet the story was stilted with no flow. Seemed liked the author was meeting an assigned word count for a high school assignment. Very disappointed!
Charlotte makes friends after being rescued from human trafficking gun runners. One of her military rescuers becomes something deeper. Love develops...her former friend turns verbally abusive...but her new love protects her. She endures another captivity and rescue. HEA.
The spelling, grammar and sentence structure mistakes in this book are atrocious. The author has a great story but needs to do a little more background research on how military promotion works and get an editor.
The story was a good story, however, the editing errors between grammar, misspelled and wrong words used made it very hard to follow. I would love to read all the books in the series but won't chance spending so much time reporting errors.
Angela Rush is a new author to me, I enjoyed reading this story. Was good and kept me interested. Love how she keeps true to susan stoker characters, we all love wolf's team. Started reading and could not put down until I was finished.
First, the story is good! Lots of intrigue, lots of romance. The execution of the book is not the best. Manor instead of manner? Changing tenses from present to past in the same sentence? Horribly annoying mistakes like that!
I enjoyed the story, but if you listen to books on audio, sometimes a narrator just doesn't click with your preference. Robyn Verne read this well, but I struggled with her breathy tone throughout the entire book.
