WOOOHOOOO we have a new artist! No more alien people. It's a new arc! No more shitty Hellmouth story. Unfortunately this issue didn't feel like a Buffy universe story. It was super easy to jump in and read; the flow is good. The art is 100% improved, but I feel like this story is lacking that unique Buffy flavor. It has veered too far off course. Hopefully it will connect soon. 2.5 stars.

p.s. why am I still reading this sub-par series?

(Copy and pasted from my review on TheStoryGraph) 4.5 Yes yes yes! Love that good good Kendra backstory, love that the comics are giving her more love than the show. Hopefully that will mean she gets to stay alive.

The art style in this issue was so unique and beautiful! Showing us a new slice of this world was cool too. I'm not surprised Kendra never wanted to leave Jamaica because it was rendered so beautifully here from the jungle behind Kendra's home to the food on her plate, the beaches and even the billboard in the opening panel. Just glorious.

Also the complex relationship between her, Vea, and Zabuto was interesting and well developed. Seeing some of Kendra's past also sheds interesting light on who she is. Also, was Zabuto about to confess he was her father? I hope he gets another chance in a future issue!

The Best Of: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #13

1. An issue solely dedicated to Kendra and her backstory, which is something we get so little of in the TV series? Hella yes! Justice and more character development for Kendra.

2. Shout-out to the art by Rosemary Valero-O'Connell and the coloring by Raul Angulo & Eleonora Bruni! Combined, they really bring Kendra's world to life in a way that is vivid and distinctive from Buffy's world.

3. Kendra expressing a very relatable mood. "I feel so far from everything. The truth is... I really like being alone."

4. Aunt Vea and Zabuto having the argument about Kendra being a Slayer that is actually the show's central conflict. "She's just a girl, Zabuto. She needs encouragement, she needs something to be happy about, and her home here... makes her happy." "A Slayer doesn't need to be happy-- A Slayer needs to be fearless."

5. Aunt Vea not putting up with any s*** from Zabuto because she cares about Kendra and her life and happiness outside of being a slayer.

6. The clear sexism and patriarchy in how the Watcher's Council views the world being on display with Zabuto and how he treats both Vea and Kendra.

7. "I am so in love with Jamaica, the thought of having to leave some day makes me sick. The energy here is vital to how I've kept my head during all of this. And how could I ever get tired of this view?"

8. Kendra and her watcher squabbling on a motorcycle as they chase after vampires. Honestly, what a dream!

9. The evil vampire having some seriously valid points about how Slayers are treated and how the Jamaicans were colonized by the British and how tourism continues as an extension of that.

10. "Jamaica is ferocious. Jamaica is tenacious. I'll never leave... part of me will always be here."

So, I like that we got a bit of a Kendra back story, that was only really alluded to in the main story.

The art is really nice in this book. Jamaica looks beautiful in it.

However, Kendra has an accent. When Bianca Lawson played her she played her with a very distinct accent. This Kendra sounds like any teenager from anywhere, her voice, her uniqueness is totally missing from this story. It's been the same the whole way through when you read Kendra's part, but they should have made more effort when the entire book was Kendra-focused.

Also, why isn't this a Kendra one-shot? This shouldn't be part of the main Buffy series. A panel at the beginning and end of Kendra telling the Scooby gang her story would have improved it immensely. As it stands it shouldn't have been part of the main story.

This was an improvement for the most. The new artist means that the questionable art is no longer detracting from the story line, finally!
The story was a contrast of the harsh realities of a Slayer (Kendra) waiting to be called, against the light background of Jamaica. For the most this worked, but I feel like it was focused too much around bickering between watcher and slayer, and watcher and aunt, and that's what lost the 5th star for me

I liked seeing a more in depth look at Kendra's upbringing in Jamaica (further need to rewatch Buffy because for some reason I didn't think she was from Jamaica...) Though I do totally question whether Buffy going into the Hellmouth counts as death therefore activating Kendra. Also, shouldn't Kendra have realized she was activated what with the extra power? She says something about feeling more "on her game" but I think the power would be more than that...

The origin of Kendra. It was kind of boring. Couldn’t read most of the text. Couldn’t really tell what was going on, but it had some cool, dynamic graphics, especially the falling off the page. But, as an overall read, not very good.

So far one of the only things I've been enjoying about this reboot is the chance for Kendra to get some more screen time. Her appearance on the show was so brief and so sad.

Ahh a new slayer and a new artist. Refreshing amidst all the audacity of the rest of the series.
