"This tear was a different sort. As it fell from scales to the air it hardened and gleamed clear as ice, and formed into a diamond. Humbert hummed again but not a sad hum. This was the hum of a dragon that had just received a promise as unbreakable as diamond."

Avis has a dream to work with animals, so when a scientist with a witchy-looking house offers her a job as a pet-s

This is a fun read. Our heroine, Avis, is dealing with the cruelties of the local school bully and his mates, and the difficulties of a broken family at home. Her Dad and older brother aren't much help and Avis has more responsibility than anyone her age should have. Then she meets the witch and her menagerie who live around the corner, and discovers that being hired as a pet-sitter means something very different to what she expected. This entertaining and well written tale of magic realism touc ...more

Avis is having a hard time at home and school. The school bully, Drake, is making her miserable and her dad and brother have changed since her mum left and shacked up with an ex-All Black. A ray of light appears in her life just when she needs it – Dr Malinda Childe. Avis dreams of working with animals and Dr Malinda offers her a job as her pet-sitter. These are no ordinary pets though. These pets are special and unusual and Avis makes a promise to keep them a secret. This isn’t the only promise ...more

This is a fabulous tale featuring a young girl who is up against many obstacles: school bullies, a nasty sibling, and a parent who is falling apart. Fate intervenes in the form of a fabled creature who needs Avis' help.

There were parts where I wondered how the author would reach satisfactory resolutions, such as the witchy

A good read for those who enjoy a mix in their reading. We have fantasy, bullying, secrets, family issues, as well as lots of environmental concerns. Would be a good read aloud in schools as there is much to consider in the story of Avis who is left in charge of some very unusual pets. All begins well until a storm changes everything and Avis must find the courage to do the right thing.

There is a lot crammed into this new children's fiction novel. Bullying, broken families, conservation, secrets, fame and lizards, all topped off with a helping of magic and dragons. The abundance of themes are woven together well so readers can relate to it easily. Potential read aloud.
