एक सुबह साधक कौलेयक अपने नित्य पाठ बोलते हुए नदी किनारे चला जा रहा था। इसी तरह वह एक बाड़ी के पास से गुजर रहा था कि उस बाड़ी के मालिक एक किसान युवक ने उसे रोका, ‘‘भगत, जरा रुक, यहाँ तक आया है तो मेरी बाड़ी में आ। यह जो मंत्र तू बोल रहा है, वह कुछ हमारे पिल्लों को भी सिखाता जा।’’ ‘‘मैं भगत नहीं, साधक हूँ।’’ कौलेयक ने जवाब दिया। ‘‘दोनों एक ही बात हैं। वैसे तो तू यात्रा को निकला है तो भगत ही माना जाएगा। फिर तू तो बड़ा ज्ञानी लगता है, इसलिए हमारी बाड़ी के, हमारे मोहल्ले के पिल्लों को भी कोई ज्ञानी गुरु मिल जाएँगे।’’ अपने बारे में ‘गुरु’ शब्द सुनते ही कौलेयक सोच में डूब गया। साधक में से मुमुक्षु भी बने बिना सीधे गुरु पद पाने की तीव्र इच्छा उसे हो आई। ‘ठीक है’ कहते हुए उसने बाड़ी में प्रवेश किया। कुछ पिल्ले उसे देखकर जरा गुर्राकर, फिर पूँछ हिलाते हुए नजदीक आ गए। उस किसान ने पिल्लों को लाइन में खड़े करके कौलेयक से पहचान कराते हुए कहा, ‘‘ये तुम्हारे गुरु हैं। चलो, इन्हें सब मिलकर प्रणाम तो करो।’’ बेचारे पिल्लों को, जो कभी नहीं किया था, वह करने का आदेश मिला तो क्या करना, यह न सूझने के कारण सब एक-दूसरे का मुझेहाँह ताकते रहे। —इसी पुस्तक से.

About the author

Dhruv Bhatt was born on 8 May 1947 in Ningala village of Bhavnagar State (now Bhavnagar district, Gujarat) to Prabodhray Bhatt and Harisuta Bhatt. He studied at various places, standard 1 to 4 at Jafrabad and Matriculation from Keshod. After studying commerce for two years, he left further studying[1] in 1972 and joined Gujarat Machine Manufacturers as Sales Supervisor. He voluntary retired and started writing career.[2]

His novel Akoopar has been adapted into a play directed by Aditi Desai.[3] Tattvamasi was adapted into the 2018 Gujarati film Reva.[4]

सरल कहानी में इतना गहरा संदेश। बहुत ही अच्छी पुस्तक। एक कुत्ते की कहानी के द्वारा मानव की जीवन की पहेलियों की व्याख्या है। जब मैंने अंत में पुस्तक को रखा, तो मुझे लगा जैसे मुझे एक नई सच्चाई, एक नयी ज़िम्मेदारी और एक नयी आत्मा मिली है।

A story from a dog's mouth. Known but not very popular concept in Gujarati literature. Dogs can speak and communicate with humans!!! But that's the difference between fact and fiction.
With the help of two dog characters Saarmey and Kauleyak, author has portrayed two souls walking on the path of moksha. One is following all kind of spirituality preached by various gurus. Other believes just in staying normal and doing what its heart says. No one is wrong but at the end we understand that why so much of penance sometimes does't take you much higher. Lot of spirituality is told from the dog's mouth.

સરળ અને સુરેખ પણ ખાસ પ્રભાવક કે નવું નહીં. ધ્રુવદાદાનું લેખન સમુન્દ્રાન્તિકે, અકૂપાર અને અગ્નિકન્યામાં ગમ્યું પણ અતરાપી ખાસ અસર ન છોડી શકી. કથાની સરળતા સાથે કંઈ વાંધો નથી પણ આ જ પ્રકારની હર્માન હેસની સિદ્ધાર્થ સવાલો સાથે જવાબોની હિન્ટ પણ આપી જાય છે જ્યારે અતરાપીમાં સારમેયનું પાત્ર અને એનું વર્તન સતત નિરાશા અનુભવ કરાવતું રહે છે.

An inspiring yet poignant allegorical tale in the grand tradition of 101 Panchtantra Stories. There is a passing reference to The Mahabharata although the canine bloodline seems to be inverted. Here the son (सारमेय) apparently has an affair with his mother (सरमा); was there a cryptic message in that? I could not decipher the enigma. Here are some extracts

पृथ्वी अनादिकाल से तय किये अपने मार्ग पर घूमती रही। अनादिकाल से धड़कते परम चैतन्य ने अनुभव किया कि इस आसीम ब्रह्माण्ड के कोने में एक पिल्ला अपने स्वभाव के विरुद्ध, एक चित्त होकर पाषाणवत स्थिर बैठ गया।
वातावरण में ठण्ड बढ़ गयी। भोर की नीरव शांति में अचानक कहीं से कोई अनजाना, सूक्ष्म अपानदान जैसा, अश्रव्य स्वर सुनाई दिया।

सामने ही ऊंचे पत्थरों पर से प्रपात के तरह बाह रहा झरना, किनारे पर खड़े वृक्षों के पत्तों को चमकाती हुई चांदनी, झरने के कलकल आवाज़, अचानक ही नव सर्जित किसी नए जगत को देखकर सरमा आश्चर्यचकित होकर देखती रही।

शांत समुद्र, पानी के काम होने पर भी लहरों को उछलने का स्वभाव छोड़ नहीं सका था। पृथ्वी से करोड़ों प्रकाशवर्ष दूर ब्रह्माण्ड के गर्भ में से उठते अनजान, लयबद्ध स्पंदनों का जैसे जवाब दे रहा हो, इस तरह से वह एक के बाद एक छोटी-छोटी मौजों को उछालकर रेतीले तट पर मंद, तालबद्ध ध्वनि करता हुआ, सफ़ेद रेट पर पड़ रही सुबह की कोमल धुप को भिगो रहा था।
विराट अर्धचंद्रकार में विस्तीर्ण किनारे के उत्तरी छोर पर चट्टानों पर से सागर पंछी कलरव करते उड़े। एक पत्थर लुढ़का और उसी पल दूधिया रंग का, लम्बे रोंएदार बालोंवाला, फुर्तीला सारमेय चट्टान पर आ खड़ा हुआ। जैसे इस पूरे दृश्य का अविभाज्य घातक हो, इस तरह वह स्थिर खड़ा रहा।

उसी क्षण प्रकृति अपनी परम मोहिनी के कल्पना साकार करना चाहती हो, इस तरह पश्चिमाक्ष के घने बादलों में से सूर्य ने झाँका। पूर्व दिशा में काले बादलों पर इंद्रधनुष रच गया। अगले ही पल समंदर पर से सागर पंछियों का जत्था उड़ा।
घनघोर बादलों की पृष्ठभूमि में, इंद्रधनुष के नीचे उड़ते जाते शुद्ध श्वेत सागर पंछिओं के पंक्ति, भीगी हुए धरती, गीली चमकती चट्टानें, उस पर खड़ा दूधिया रंग का रोबदार सारमेय। इन सबने मिलकर कदाचित देखने को को मिलता, ऐसा अप्रतिम दृश्य रच दिया।

तीव्रतम बनती शीत ऋतू की ठण्ड ने सूर्य की अनुपस्थिति में जैसे कहर बरपाया हो, ऐसा सन्नाटा छा गया। आकाश में उत्तर-दक्षिण तक फैली हुई आकाश गंगा, किसी सदस्रोता महानद जैसे नक्षत्र, तारों के वृन्द और वायुमंडल के बीच नभ पथ पर सरकते जा रहे थे। अगणित तारक रत्नों की स्वामिनी एक के बाद एक रत्न आकाश में बिछाती जा रही थी।
कोई महारानी अपने रत्न भण्डार के तमाम रहस्य खोल देना के बाद रत्नों के बिछौने पर बैठकर रत्नों के आभा ग्रहण कर रही हो, इस तरह दक्षिणाकाश को भर देती वृशिचक के अंततगत धनु निहारिकाओं में मन्दाकिनी परम तेज से झिलमिला उठी।

The breed of the dogs was indeterminate, the cover photo showed a Pointer in profile, the intelligence could be attributed to a Golden Retriever, although the while haired breed may have been a Samoyed.
The touching ending left me lachrymose.

This left me thinking at places where are we going. At places I thought this is my own story. At places, I felt irritated at too indulgent and rude way of talking by Sarmeya. And at many places I felt why can't I mark these fabulous on-liners having deep meaning.

That was how I felt reading about this dog, who knew nothing.

કેટલીક બુક્સ વાંચવાની હોય , એમ કહીએ કે આપણે વાંચીએ..કેટલીક બુક્સ સમજવાની હોય ...કેટલીક બુક્સ અનુસરવાની હોય તો કેટલીક અનુભવવાની હોય , માણવાની હોય...
અનુભવવા અને માણવાની બૂક છે આ ....તત્વમસી ની જેમ જ....
કંઈક સ્પષ્ટ રીતે કહેવુ એના કરતા કંઈક અલગ રીતે લેખકે જે કહેવુ હતુ એ સમજાવેલ છે...એમ કહી શકાય કે કહી પે નિગાહે કહી પે નિશાના......
આ પુસ્તક મૂક પ્રેક્ષક બની ફીલ કરવા જેવુ છે..

વધારે કંઈ નહી કહું પણ ..મારે હજી વધારે વાર વાંચવું જોઈશે....તત્વમસીની જેમ જ....એક વાર વંચાય પછી ય તરસ બૂઝાય નહી ...એમ કહી શકો....

તદ્દન નવી રીતે કહેલ વાત....રોજિંદા નાયક ..નાયિકા વગરની બૂક ..જેમાં શ્વાન ..હા ...શ્વાનની આસપાસ ઘૂમતી ઘટનાઓ , મનોભાવો , વ્યક્તિઓ સબંધી વાતો .......અને એ સિવાય પણ ઘણુ ......અને એની સાથે કહેવા જેવુ બધુ જ કહી દેવુ .....

Set in an alternate world of anthropomorphic animals and humans, Atarapi is a philosophical life journey of dog Sarmey and his dog brother. The story is fast-paced, involves classic philosophical dilemmas, and ends with enlightening an entirely different path of living and choices for readers. It is ironic how some philosophical books heaved with the weight of complex ideas can seem insipid while a coming-of-age story an anthropomorphic dog can teach so many life lessons.

મારા જેવી માણસ કે જેને existential crisis ખૂબ આવે, અવારનવાર આવે, પણ સાથોસાથ અલગારી મોજ પણ ચાલતી હોય, એમના માટે આ પુસ્તક એક અરીસો કહી શકાય કઈક અંશે.

મને નથી ખબર એમાંથી કેટલું જાણ્યું, પણ અનુભવ્યું ઘણું છે એમાનું. અને એતો ઠીક, પણ જવાબો મળ્યા કે નહિ, એ પણ હજુ ખબર નથી. પણ કદાચ આ બધુંય જે થાય છે, એની એજ મજા છે, કે થાતું રેવું જોઈએ.

જોઈએ આગળ શું થાય છે.
અત્યારે તો અહીંયા છીએ!

જરૂર વચવું જોઈએ, ખાસ એવા લોકો જેમને લાઈફના પ્રશ્નો આવતા ને જાતાં તથા રે.

My heart is full! While reading last few chapters, I could not control tear streams! I haven't read such a profound yet beautiful story. Dhruv dada has told the deepest philosophy of life through this book. I feel, I need to go through few lines again to actually understand the depth, or maybe it will take some time. Knowing and understanding both are the different things- as Saramey says!

अनुभव अथवा शिक्षित ज्ञान एक जीवन में क्या अधिक महत्वपूर्ण है। इस कहानी में दो श्वान भाई हैं एक को जीवन स्वयं के अनुभव और बिना किसी बंधन में बंधे अपने अनुसार जीना है। दूसरा शिक्षा ग्रहण कर अपने जाति भाइयों को भी शिक्षित कर उनका उद्धार करना चाहता है। दोनों ही अपने अपने मार्ग में श्रेष्ठ पद ग्रहण करते हैं, जहाँ छोटा भाई किसी संबंध से स्वयं को नहीं बांधता फ़िर भी संबंधों में बंधता चला जाता है। वहीं बड़ा भाई जो शिक्षित और प्रतिष्ठित गुरु के सानिध्य में रहा है वह संबंधों में रहकर भी किसी से श्रेष्ठ संबंध में नहीं बंध पाता।

जीवन किस मार्ग पर चलकर जीना है ऐसे अनेक मन में उठते सवालों का शाब्दिक रूप है ये पुस्तक, जो जिज्ञासा और अनुभव दोनों का ही ज्ञान देता है।

અતરાપી અર્થાત અજાણ્યુ., બહારનું, ત્રાહિત.
એક જીવ જે જીવનના કોઇ બંધનમાં બંધાયેલ નથી, મુક્તપણે ફક્ત પોતે જે છે એજ પ્રામાણિક્તાથી જીવે છે. ન તો પુણ્ય કમાવાનો કોઇ મોહ , ન તો પાપ થઈ જવાનો કોઇ ભય. બસ , વર્તમાન જીવવાની ચાહ અને પોતાની આત્મા માણવાની રાહ.

આવા જ એક જીવની વાત આ પુસ્તકમાં કરવામા આવી છે.
" હું જાણતો નથી. "
" એમ કરવું મને જરુરી નથી લાગતું " અને
" એમ હોય પણ શકે "
આ ત્રણ દોહરાવતી આ લઘુકથા જીવન પ્ર્ત્યેનો સદંતર નવો જ દ્ર્ષ્ટિકોણ મને આપી ગઈ. જેનો અંત મારા માનસપટ પર હંમેશ માટે કોતરાઈ ગયો છે.

This little book takes a reader down a seemingly small journey with creatures that are too often overlooked. I found myself intrigued by the way I would lose track of which characters were dogs and which were humans. While this blurring of lines contributes to a conversational flow throughout the novel, many chapters started in ways that left me wanting more development from past chapters. Perhaps this is a lesson from the book: watch out for ways you hold onto the past. Reading this book in Gujarati might provide an altogether different experience.
