This early work by Arthur Benjamin Reeve was originally published in 1912 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. "The Black Hand" is an early story of the Mafia, in which Kennedy and Jameson come to the aid of an opera singer whose daughter has been kidnapped. Arthur Benjamin Reeve was born on 15th October 1880 in New York, Usa. Reeve received his University education at Princeton and upon graduating enrolled at the New York Law School. However, his career was not destined to be in the field of Law. Between 1910 and 1918 he produced 82 short stories for Cosmopolitan. During this period he also began authoring screenplays. By the end of this decade his film career was at its peak with his name appearing on seven films, most of them serials and three of them starring Harry Houdini. In 1932 he moved to Trenton to be near his alma mater. He died on 9th August 1936.

Arthur Benjamin Reeve (October 15, 1880 - August 9, 1936) was an American mystery writer. He is best known for creating the series character Professor Craig Kennedy, sometimes called "The American Sherlock Holmes", and Kennedy's Dr. Watson-like sidekick Walter Jameson, a newspaper reporter, in 18 detective novels. The bulk of Reeve's fame is based on the 82 Craig Kennedy stories, published in Cosmopolitan magazine between 1910 and 1918. These were collected in book form; with the third collection, the short stories were stitched together into pseudo-novels. The 12-volume Craig Kennedy Stories were released in 1918; it reissued Reeve's books-to-date as a matched set.

Tiến vào kỷ nguyên vươn mình, quỹ thời gian để đọc sách của mình trở nên èo uột, những mẫu truyện ngắn như Sherlock Holmes là giải pháp để mình duy trì thú vui mỗi tối. Cùng tên Arthur, tác giả Arthur B. Reeve sáng tạo nên “Bàn tay đen”, những truyện ngắn tương tự những mẫu truyện trinh thám của Arthur Conan Doyle. Với thám tử Craig Kennedy cùng người bạn đồng hành là phóng viên Jameson, tập truyện “Bàn tay đen” vừa quen mà lạ. Quen là vì truyện gợi nhớ đến Holmes, lạ là ở tính cách của nhân vật lẫn phong cách điều tra thoát ly khỏi hình bóng bộ đôi thám tử đình đám.

Quyển này không tạo được tiếng vang, có thể do biên tập ở truyện thứ nhất nhiều âm “th”, “t” và “đ” loạn xì ngầu nhưng với mình quyển này đọc không hoài công. Năm truyện ngắn, năm cuộc điều tra khác nhau cho thấy sự lợi hại khi áp dụng khoa học kỹ thuật vào phá án ở thời kỳ trinh thám sơ khai. Kennedy thẳng thừng triển khai kế hoạch từ đầu, không giấu giếm tạo sự bí hiểm nhưng vẫn bất ngờ. Hình ảnh minh hoạ cổ điển phương Tây góp phần làm không khí thêm hoài cổ.

Năm ngày, năm câu chuyện, chuyện mà mình thích nhất là truyện cuối cùng “Kẻ biển thủ”. Với trinh thám cổ điển, những màn phá án có sự tham gia của phụ nữ, có chút yếu tố lãng mạn và yếu tố chính trị là những câu chuyện thú vị nhất.

Với độc giả trinh thám, gu đọc ngày càng cao. Có thể nói là sướng quen nên khổ không chịu được. Hiện tại có thể trinh thám twist chồng twist đang là xu thế nhưng với mình, trinh thám cổ điển vẫn luôn có chỗ đứng vững chắc trong lòng.
